View Full Version : Perceptions of what it means to be "gay".

Now that Details Magazine has issued an apology for its offensive "Gay or Asian" "humor" piece, I wanted to ask why this piece mobilized so many Asian Americans. It seemed to me that the reaction was far greater than on many other issues. Also, it reminded me of what achtungbaby said in another thread (regarding the dismissal of Asian Americans in the set-aside program):
"Gay or Asian" http://forums.yellowworld.org/showthread.php?t=14838
Note that I am not saying that this was not a worthwhile issue to protest.
Thoughts?*gleefully attempts to break YW's Run-On Sentence Record*
The first thought that comes to mind is when a coworker brought an issue of Maxim and showed me an article where the interviewer asks a white pro-baseball player if he thinks his new Japanese teammate is gay for getting caught having sex with a man in a videotape from his college days even though the Japanese ballplayer says he isn't gay. In this article, the white pro-ball player responds to the interviewer's question by saying, "He must be trying to win an Academy Award because there's no way a man can have sex with another man and not be gay!" Why my coworker showed this to me, I have no idea. If he was trying to get some insight from a Japanese mind, he went to the wrong source. About the Japanese ballplayer, all I could say was that denial is a common trait in whores and that the naivete of bringing that sexist, racist, and sociopathic piece of trash around my way was insulting(even though I did sniff a cologne page for him and give him my recommendation). Now he probaly thinks homosexual activity among 'straight' asian males is a normal occurence. It's beginning to look like white america considers gay to be synonymous with asians. I've seen signs of it when I went to see Kill Bill 2 and the white men were laughing their hardest at the Kung Fu master calling him a faggot out loud because of the effiminate way he handled his goatee.

i hope your co-worker and you understands that not all people who perform same-sex acts consider themselves gay.
When I gave him an example by explaining to him that promiscuous women don't think of themselves as sluts, he understood immediately.

When I gave him an example by explaining to him that promiscuous women don't think of themselves as sluts, he understood immediately. um, that's a value judgement that you placed on the women the same way you can call people who don't have sex, prudes. it's irrelevant, ooo, and sexist.

Great. You've just exceeded my personal gay thread quota limit for the month of June.

After suffering the consequences of going off-topic, I'll try to be more careful on where my thoughts wander. Going back to the subject of the matter, the title of this thread and the excuse that the Japanese ballplayer used, raises an interesting issue. If he says he isn't gay but does gay things then wouldn't that just mean he is just a percentage more bi-curious than the typical straight male? Guys are always talking about how they love to see two women make love to each other, wouldn't you have to be bicurious to enjoy something like that? I know some guys who think bicurious and bisexual is just another word for gay, but then they never take their own bicuriousness into question, especially since they joke around with each about their cock sizes and play grab-crotch with each other, like no one else is going to notice

because you love dictionary.com
gay adj. gay·er, gay·est
A person whose sexual orientation is to persons of the same sex.
A man whose sexual orientation is to men: an alliance of gays and lesbians.
sexual orientation n.
The direction of one's sexual interest toward members of the same, opposite, or both sexes.
sex·u·al ( P ) Pronunciation Key (sksh-l) adj.
Of, relating to, involving, or characteristic of sex, sexuality, the sexes, or the sex organs and their functions.
Implying or symbolizing erotic desires.
Relating to, produced by, or involving reproduction characterized by the union of male and female gametes: sexual reproduction. [/b]
gay = sexual orientation towards a member of the same sex = sexual attraction towards the same sex.
when you have sex with someone, does that mean that you love them? a man can have sex with another man because they are questioning, and through the act, discover that he is in fact straight. there are many instances in which a sex act has no indication of a person's sexuality, including forced sex acts.
interest in cock size, crotch-grabbing are not in and of themselves 'gay indicators' or whatever you want to call it, because they can be non-sexual horseplay... much like talking about breast sizes, or appreciating another woman's beauty, among women doesn't make everyone lesbians. SE, i think you have a rough time distinguishing between sexual features and sexuality -- sexual attraction is about mindset, which is why homosexuality has a lot to do with self-identification.
it's highly inappropriate not only for anyone to reveal closeted gays, and also for people to assume or try to enforce sexual identity upon another person. your post also seems to indicate that you believe that any non-straight sexuality or behaviour is 'gay' not because it is homosexual but that it deviates from your definition of normality (e.g. when you say that the men are bicurious because they talk about cock size).

*gleefully attempts to break YW's Run-On Sentence Record* Normally I'd enjoy a little semantic playfulness, but I'd like to note that red text is really hard to read and, when used as the color for a paragraph-length sentence, it's damn near impossible to read.
and also for people to assume or try to enforce sexual identity upon another person.
werd. well-said, jenn.
as a general rule, this should probably go for other areas of identity as well.
It's beginning to look like white america considers gay to be synonymous with asians. I've seen signs of it when I went to see Kill Bill 2 and the white men were laughing their hardest at the Kung Fu master calling him a faggot out loud because of the effiminate way he handled his goatee.I think it's interesting how white America find Asian males to be more pausibly identified with being gay, while the Asian and Pacific Islander community often denies that fact. If you look in family situation, denial about being gay is perhaps as extreme as some of the stereotypes that says otherwise. For many gay (and straight) Asian and Pacific Islander Islander guys, it's frustrating to have mainstream society and internal family structures play off these two conflicting standards.
In any case, the old guy in Kill Bill was probably a eunuch anyways...he said he hated white women. Not that it matters...he'll make your heart explode if you piss him off.

no, not a eunuch. that's really exactly how kungfu masters act in old kungfu movies and tv series, stroking their beards and all. and you can see from old Chinese brush paintings that they have the look right.
