Anyone live in New York? I will be Long Island, NY (5-10 minutes away from NYC). I know two of you who do... but any ideas of what to visit? Museums, festivals, shopping, eateries, college campuses? Anyone care to join me for lunches, shopping, etc? I will be by myself for a few days. The other days, I will be with my s.o.

Which city? I can try to put something together with YWers.

I will be in Boston that Friday to Sunday for the Art of Beer Festival (any Beantowners wanna meet for drinks with me and my mates?), but would enjoy meeting up with YWers during the week in NYC metro.

Janet: The Bienniel is still running at the Whitney, I'd recommend that. Pay as you will after 6 on Fridays. $12 nonmembers otherwise.

I'm down with a get-together if date and time permits (I work until early evening)...luckily I'll have some walking-around moolah after paying rent the previous week...

Ok I obviously don't know what I"m talking about. I am going to stay in Newark, NJ ... so really i'm 50 miles away. I will be free Wednesday and Friday (during lunch time) or after 8pm at night those nights. I have never been to New York. Some pointers would be nice about transportation, safety issues, shopping, etc... I would like to get my hair cut in Manhattan. What is a good place to get a woman's haircut?

Newark is pretty close to Manhattan, approx. 14 miles. The PATH train takes about 40 minutes with a transfer at Journal Square (Jersey City) or you can take NJ Transit trains -- the Midtown Express will get you there in 25.

I work in East Orange which is right next to Newark. I could show you around Wednesday evening.

The Whitney is a museum. Modern & contemporary art. http://www.whitney.org

The Whitney Biennial is a popular and sometimes controversial art show at the Whitney Museum that comes twice a year.

There are a plethora of hair salons in NYC. I dunno how much moola you'd be spending, though...I have some Japanese friends who do hair styling at some smaller Japanese-owned boutiques in Midtown and the East Village, but since you're spending the majority of your time in Jersey, you'd probably do better going to a Newark salon. If you're interested, I can hit you up with my friends' info, though.

I wouldn't worry about being bored. You could literally have fun just walking aimlessly down the street here, especially if it's not raining (knock on wood)

(dang just noticed Ism beat me to that Whitney stuff)

Please hit me up with some contacts. Well, I do not feel like spending more than $80 for a hair cut/style. I am very picky about my hair..... unfortunately. =) Do they do your hair all the time?
Where else would any of you recommend visiting?
The Whitney sounds excellent. What makes it so controversial?

The Whitney sounds excellent. What makes it so controversial?

They're one of the most progressive galleries, the curators making a point to be ahead of the curve. Dictating what is "art" is a dangerous business. Lately they have been doing a lot of electronic/video game art with the likes of Cory Arcangel and Counter-strike sprays. Personally, cybertext is a pretty old concept but it's still foreign to a lot of people. They also tend to exhibit certain artists who have a controversial flair around them... Maplethorpe in 1988... Andres Serrano’s “Piss Christ" about the same time Olifi's dung Madonna was annoying Guiliani... Hans Haacke's “Sanitation" in 2000... just in recent memory.

Sometimes it seems they're trying too hard, but the art world really needs it. The only other places that can keep pace are... hmm... L.A. MoCA and S.F. MoMA.

This particular Bienniel is very nice, with a well-rounded display of everything, from ink pen to photos to installations... a little heavy on the video though. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Elmhurst (one word) is smack in the middle of Queens. It's actually quite close to Flushing, which most of us YWers live, namely me, lama, csb, and meena. There's no beaches around elmhurst, it's like a mini chinatown.

it's really convenient though to take the 7 subway train. If you like you can always see the Mets play at Shea stadium.

avs
04-29-2004, 09:12 PM
 nah you don't want to watch neither the mets or the yanks right now. They've not been playing very well.
Well for starter.. check out metropolitan musem around the 80's st. While you're there, if it's a nice day make sure you take a stroll to central park.

As far as for shopping. It really depend on your style. But Soho and uptown (50's st) is a nice place to check out.

That's all i can think of right now.

by subway, it should be about 45 minutes? something like that. if you wanna go to soho, add on another 10-15 minutes depending on how fast the damned 6 train arrives.

just stay on the main streets and you'll be fine.

Ronkonkama I think...Long Island.

Empire state, Central Park, and Times Square are considered midtown. Well, the Park is midtown to uptown. I live in midtown, very close to Times Square actually.

All of Manhattan is pretty safe, avoid areas above 96th Street generally. Otherwise, just be aware of your surroundings, but I've never felt unsafe anywhere in Manhattan (south of 96th) at any time of the day.

So what day is good for you to put something together? It looks like CSB is on call that weekend, but if you're in Elmhurst, we should do something in Flushing where meena, tao, and CL live.

I am not sure how early or late i will be arriving east elmhurst on Friday.... I will need contacts from you and whoever will join us... I have already contacted meena, but i'm waiting for a response. i will give you my email privately. Anyone else care to join? The more the merrier.

I actually have to thank you...I was trolling my friends' boutiques and I hooked up with someone I haven't seen in a while...while she was getting her hair did...crazy world...anyway...

I personally am Black n' bald, so I haven't actually HAD or NEEDED services to get my hair did, but my friends are upright and reputable folk, so they wouldn't steer me wrong! Also, these places are in Manhattan proper itself, in the Lower East Side, East Village and Downtown area. I dunno if you may wanna keep to Queens where it may be more convenient and closer to home. Or you can troll into the city, get your head coiffed and then go on to the next move...life's an adventure, bebeh!

from what i'm reading: isn't a referral from a guy, who happens to be black, better than no referral at all? or does his referral not count because he's black? and he so-happens to have many asian (japanese, in particular?) friends.

it is a "we" know "our kind" better when it comes to hair. and they might have a lower probability of fucking the haircut up since in a chinese salon caters mostly to a chinese clientale.

it is probably cheaper at a chinese salon cuz there's so many of them.

you're right, having referrals is better than having none at all. and no, it's not because the referrals is from a black guy with lots of japanese friends.

all the women that i know around me whatever race or ethnicity they may be, all go to their "own" hair salon and hair stylist. they all refuse to go to a different salon and stylist of a different ethnicity or race from a bad past experienc(s). sure, it might be just coincidence and it just happened to them.

korean hair tend to be thicker (courser?) and more wavy than chinese hair.

my friend took me to a korean place to get my haircut. it looked like crap.

i guess this would make me racist for never wanting to go to any other place but a chinese place to get my haircut.

i would imagine there would be differences in texture or whatever when it comes to chinese and japanese hair. just like korean and chinese hair.

just go to chinatown. there's at least one salon on every block. and they're probably cheaper too cuz there's so much competition in the local area. or you can use the referrals irezumi gave you. the choice is yours.

hee. well, biologically, nothing. asians have round hair strands and whites have flat hair strands. or maybe it was the other way around. you can see it under a microscope. mmm, but according to everyone else, it seems like they think there's a lot more different than just hair strands.

and, amongst young professionals or teens? even middle-aged or aging women. i don't think there's a significant difference in hairstyles where i live. maybe it's different in new york. i do live in a suburb.

i don't think it's so much the ethnicity of the hairstylist, it's the ability. who's to say if a black hairdresser would be good or not at cutting a white or asian person's hair? sure, i know i'd be weary at first, just because his or her hair is drastically different from my own, but if he or she were a professional, and she had other asian or white clientele who were satisfied, i think i'd give it a shot. i dunno. i just think that sticking within your own ethnic boundaries is not going to ensure you a great haircut. but that's just me. and well, it's not my mission to change the world, but i'd like to. the original statement? yeah, it's racist. go to a chinese salon. they prolly know chinese hair better. why take your chance at a japanese salon? okay, and even if you don't think it is. read the statement. tell me. what's wrong with japanese salons? say, the hairdresser is a flaming faggot, and japanese. does that mean he's incapable of giving a fashionable haircut for a conservative or otherwise? or is he only able to give gay haircuts because he's gay?

i 've been to japanese places and i come out looking
like one of those japanese chicks with funky hair.
Whaaaat? A Korean-Am girl looking Japanese?

I dinna think such a thing was possible!

A cut's a cut to me...personally, I love a BALD lady if you have the head shape for it, but work with whatever works for you, if'n it makes you feel sexy!

Watch Janet go to Harlem and come back with afro puffs or cornrows...heh heh

So! What's the dilly with the Saturday hook-up? Are we doin' this or not? If all involved will make a small sortie, I was going to suggest Uminoie in the East Village or Riki in Midtown. Or we could do OroBlu for Italian over on the West Side downtown...I ain't been there for a bit and my friends are mad at me for not supporting their establishments with my slave wages. I dunno. Whatever whereever is cool, as long as it's accessible. I ain't picky.

Let's stick to the points:)

I don't necessarily think it's racist to suggest "one of your own" can cut your hair better than someone else. It has less to do with some actual perceived genetic skill imbued onto each racial/ethnic group and more to do with hair/cosmetics being a very cultural domain -- what one person from a specific group might think looks nice may not hold water with another group.

Of course I'm biased. I tend to think Korean hairstylists in LA will give an Asian person, on average, a better haircut than anyone else. If there are some deeper implications embedded within this preferential thought, feel free to hit me over the head with it.

Hmmm....

Lemme ask this question...

Who here amongst the fold has gotten a cut/style from a "White" establishment and being disatisfied with the end result, blamed it on either:

1) They weren't Asian and didn't "know" Asian hair
2) They were just lousy hairstylists period

nice pic of the boba.

that reminds me of when i went w/my bro to new york and checked out the chinatown in manhattan. we couldn't find any boba shops but this one. we go in and sit down to order and my bro orders, "leung ga boba lai cha" (is that how two boba lai chas is pinyin-ed?). the waitress gives him this weird look and then i tell her we just want "leung ga jun jeew lai cha." she looks relieved and goes away to put our order in. i ask my brother if he knew what boba meant, and he just says, "uhh. pearls?" i explained to him that boba is slang in cantonese not just for tapioca but also for boobs, and that boba as slang for tapioca is mainly a west coast/california thing. when she comes back he explains to her that we're from SF and that's a slang thing and she looks even more relieved and laughs.

that is all.

Fridays are too shady for me. I still work around 8, especially Fridays might be busy for me and so won't get out til 9 at best. It wouldn't be considerate of me to pop into a joint an hour and a half late, so...no go...even though I'll be in that very same area later on.

I'm still down for a Saturday night special at 8, though, if that's in the cards.
