You have any particular tricks of the trade when it comes to hooping at the court? Behind the back passes that only you can do, things like that there. I used to shoot without jumping slightly, once I finally made it a definite everytime I shoot, my percentage started increasing.

~i got a nice left/off hand....pretty good goin both directions when scoring and shooting lay ups...but overall though, i got two "decent" hands to do lay ups (and even sometimes short jumpers), but overall, my right/dominant hand isn't that great in general (shot is fair shooting w/the left or right, but no "good" w/dominant one).........weird...

i used to dunk. if i couldn't get off enuff force to dunk, i use to smack the backboard with one or both hands on a layup. the best was smacking the backboard with one hand doing a reverse layup.
i had mad dribbling skills. one time in a varsity high school division game the guy guarding me fell backwards tryin to steal the ball from me.
i had a mean first step
i was ambidextrous.
i used to go around the world three-four times shooting three's on a high school regulation 3pt line.
i used to pretend to throw the ball over the shoulder of the guy that was guarding me. if he looked, i'd try and blow by him. if he didn't look, i just gave him a big grin.
i used to palm the ball with one hand and tease the guy guarding me with it.
i talked mad shit. my sophomore year, one of the players from a rival varsity high school division team complained to his coach about me and his coach voiced his concern to my coach.
the key words here are "was," "had" and "use to"
i think some important skills for pickup games that i picked up were:
1)learn how to use both your left and your right hand. if not shooting, definitely lay ups.
2)improve your jumpshot and shooting technique. whether it's a stop and pop on a break or an in your face fade away.
3)some post up moves like a turn around jumpshot or turn around fade away jumpshot. a baby hook using your left and right hand etc etc etc
4)practice how to use the rim to prevent potential shot blockers i.e reverse lay ups with either side and hand.
5)learn how to use your legs to protect the ball so that the person guarding you don't take a swipe at you and steal the ball. you can practice by crossing the ball in and out from your legs while you walk.
6)and most importantly master (not just know) your left and right hand dribbling.
Nice skills! : )
Mine:
1. I can do a reverse layup when in the air, not Dr J style, though. It's not as hard as people think. Jump forward, and when you're slightly past, send the ball back up. Always remember that using more force on the shot is better than airballing it, because if the shot airballs, you have to wait for it to bounce before you start dribbling again.
2. Three point shooting. I'm able to hit game shots, and prefer practice with someone guarding me. Using my legs a lot to propel the shot and sending the shot on a high arc works best for me.
3. Perimeter defense. Try to steal the ball as much as you can get away with and when they drive past you, you might get lucky and have a chance to pick the ball from them. I play my perimeter players on defense just like post players, rough. I did almost foul out a lot of times, though.
What I have trouble on is dribbling. I'm a okay dribbler, as long as it doesn't involve anything through the legs or behind the back. At most, I can manage a couple of dribblers through my legs, but to keep the momentum, I drive straight to the basket. Can anyone give me pointers on improving dribbling?

my sophomore year, my varsity coach used to make us dribble with gloves on or with one hand tied behind our back. he used to make me practice our offense during our scrimmages with gloves on. once in awhile he'll be a total dick and make me do it with one hand tied behind my back (usually my right hand which was my stronger hand).
he also would use five people on my team and six people on the opposing team where they would apply the full court press on me constantly.
i also used to practice on my own where i would to the park for pickup games by dribbling the ball in and out of my legs while i walked.
try the gloves and dribbling with one hand exclusively.

just dribble everywhere you walk, like to class or whatnot.

When you go up against a fat guy, it's a lot easier to run around him than to juke him. Because fat guys generally move slower they won't or can't always go for your fakes, and if they're standing in the way you want to they can't change direction as fast as you can fake. And if you try to slow down for him, other defenders will be on you soon. Easier to pass off or just run around him.
this is for soccer. I'd expect in basketball the principle would be the same, but I dunno.

That's what I do too. But you'll be amazed at how someone very large (such as Shaq) is able to hold their composure.

How good is anybody at Horse? That's my one area where I can shine. Most of the people I challenge can't do too complicated moves, being the reason.

i usually just do an in the air under the leg lay up or do a simple dunk and win that way.
if a guy dunks better than me, i'm fucked anyways.

whenever I play, everyone wants to be a damn shooting guard, or a scoring point guard (those bastards). They crowd the perimeter. So I've always had to crash the boards so I could touch the damn ball.
But otherwise, i think i have a decent cross, a streaky jumper (that always seems to go in, the more difficult the shot), i think a decent all around game that goes unappreciated in pick up games.
I hate playing center in Asian/JA leagues because i'm the tallest at only 5' 10"!!!
I get the shaft alot from PGs like them, even though I was sometimes a better dribbler. So I asked the coach to let me handle the PG instead, and it worked out well.

i prefer to play the SF. i like banging in the paint every now and then.
but, i always get stuck playing the PG and sometimes the SG.
edit: i hate playing the SG.
I love SG, because I can stroke the ball but I don't have to dribble that often. PG is annoying, because I hate the responsibility for TOs that we have. SF probably is a fun position. You can choose to do what you like, yet you aren't responsible, but you still can and should, to try to run the offense or rebound the ball.
