i guess this topic can fit both in this and the student's forum, but i'd like to keep it here.

for those of you still in college, can you please describe the requirements necessary to major in women's studies? have any of you considered majoring in women's studies? why or why not?

also - for those of us out of college - have you ever taken a women's studies course/did you major/minor in women's studies?

i just want a comparison between what they used to teach and what is taught today. also, i want to know if there is less of a stigma attached to majoring in women's studies (and you can also discuss whether or not you felt such a stigma ever existed or if it's just me.)

i feel so old...
feeling like college was so way back when...
but yeah, i took one womens studies course...
i didnt minor on the subject...
it was just some elective course...
and i have a fuzzy memory...

but i remember there was this one guy in the class...
who was really vocal... and it annoyed me...
and like i remember feeling...
i wish it was only females allowed to take the class...

i am majoring in equity studies, which is very much akin to womens studies.

here at university of toronto the courses offered by the womens studies department are:
- introduction to womens studies
- scientific perspectives on sex and gender
- gender, race, and class in contemporary popular culture
- feminisms, texts, theories,
- history of feminism
- gender issues in the law
- gender and disability
- women and health
- women in world cultures
- studies in post-colonialism
- women in psychology/psychoanalysis
- gender and violence
- feminist studies in sexuality
- women and issues of international development
+ seminars & independent studies.

there are other courses you can take that will count towards your specialist/major/minor, that are offered by other faculties, some examples:
- social anthropology of gender
- history of women in european history
- language and power structure
- sexuality and law
- history and perspectives in sexual diversity

i took the intro to womens studies course, and i really enjoyed it. there were a few guys in my class, and no one had a problem with any of them.
