You mean like Wutang clan? And DMX doing martial arts flicks?
I think they're just into it. I don't think there's any harm in it. I guess it's analogous to Asian people listening to Jay-Z, Nas etc etc. One of my best friend and childhood friend is black. I asked him this one day and he said I think it all started with the movie "The Last Dragon." Haha "Yo Bruce Leroy!"
Or maybe the rap and hip hop community took one look at Russell Simmons' wife and just got interested in Asian culture? :D

Or the other way around. Aren't Jet Li movies set to rap soundtracks these days? They seem to go together.
I remember The Last Dragon. Sho Nuff.

i think i read somewhere that a reason why many african american men like kung fu flicks is because they can see some 'similarities' with the hero with themselves - how the underdog is always fighting against the dominant/oppressive people/system. it's because of these plots in these movies that many blacks feel for these flicks. granted, the hero is asian but that does'nt detract from the way he's fighting against injustice. also the fact that hes asian helps blacks identify more because they just could'nt relate to white heroes.
this explains why many blacks are'nt into samurai films where the hero is always subject to a higher lord/bound by a strict code of honour and does'nt seem to challenge the 'system' even though he may fight the bad guys.
Yeah I heard that too. From my experience outside of Asians, black people that I know are sympathetic and can relate to Asian issues. I don't know how it is like in Cali with the aftermath of the LA riots, but my black friend's can relate to me when I bitch and complain about issues of asian racism and some of our plights.

i don't really see how it especially goes with hip hop. i think it goes well with pretty much anything with a beat. remember they used to have sort of a funk background back in some of the 70s kung fu movies. i think that sounds really cool too.

yeah when we're bitching they can understand it, but for many asian kids in urban areas, they get picked on by black kids alot more than white kids. and have you ever watched a black-asian team-up movie with jet li or jackie chan? every 15 minutes some asswipe black dude will yell out "chink" or something and then an entire section will break into laughter. fucking idiots.

Would it be fair to say that in American made martial arts flicks, having a black co-lead with the Asian lead is less dominating that having a white co-lead? Or rather, is there more equity between black and Asian co-stars than an Asian/white pairing*?

out in nyc, it seems like asians are a target for hate/petty/sexual crimes more often from blacks than any other ethnicity. It's come to the point that chinese delivery guys in east harlem are packing glocks to deliver food.

yeah i have relatives in nyc and many of them have been targets of robberies or theft. all were committed by black people. not to imply that black people are criminals. but in urban areas, criminals do statistically consist of the majority of crime offenders.

Ouch DBS and MK. But I was saying people in my circle.
DBS I heard that shit too, up in Columbia the chinese food delivery guys would tell me they pack heat just to deliver uptown. My black friend did acknowledge there is animosity amongst blacks towards asians since blacks view that they've been in this country longer and see that asians are better off financially than some of the blacks.
One of my parents' closest friend is black, since the husband helped my dad set up here and looked out when they first came to the US. Yeah I had my beef with blacks and threw down. Like DBS also got stabbed when I was younger too, but it was minor. But not for nothing , if I get jumped or jigged and mugged again by a black man, the first friend that's gonna show up and visit me at the hospital is gonna be my black friend.
Like you guys said shit's fucked up.

I think what we were saying applies more to american born blacks. I see a lot more mutual respect between asians and carribeans, africans, haitians. My mom has a lot of jamaican friends from her job, and they all equally hate american born blacks. They see them as freeloaders who use pass oppression as a crutch.

Yup I heard that shit, too, from the black folks around me. Especially from their parents. Guess it might have some truth to it.
Oh and to stay on topic: Hip Hop and Kungfu. Chasiubao_Boy likes! Better than heavy metal(Boo and Yuck) as a soundtrack!

I agree. For traditional wusha, of course traditional music. For modern ass kicking bonanzas, hip hop seems to carry the right type of energy.
On a side note, one of my friends subjected me to some Conficious rap last year. Ad your own wisecrack to that one.

As for the Blacks liking Asian kung-fu, samurai flicks...
Hmm, I think someone explained it well: It shows people fighting the odds, fighting "the system"...
(And this, of course, dates back to the 70s)...
hey that makes sense. i've also read that this is also why there are more and more punk/hiphop collaborations.
