i can't find the article anymore, but there was some guy who wrote up an article on being "googled"...and we're not talking getting information. some people here might know about slashdot.org; it's a news site for nerds. whenever someone posts and article, thousands of people click on any links included, usually bringing down a site to its knees, and sometimes sending it offline; hence the term "slashdotted". well, a few days ago, there was this fractally-decorated google image (one of my friend's friend does these cool decorated logos). it was some fractal mathemetician's bday (2/2) apparently hundreds of thousands of people tried to visit the site. the owners ended up having to move the site to another url to prevent the machine from crashing. this was essentially a DDoS, if unintentionally.
questions:
1) Does google have a responsibility for monitoring traffic like this?
2) Do you agree with me that, on some level, this is sort of funny?
3a) (directed toward achtungbaby, or anyone else who knows) Could yw handle a traffic flood like that?
3b) If the answer to 3a) was "yes", would we want that to happen?

Does google or any other search engine for that matter?

I see what you're saying about putting up a bogus link that would direct traffic to it for the wrong reason.

But why would it be google's or any other search engine's fault for that matter?

actually what i meant was that google posted the link to the site on its home page. the issue is whether they had warned the site administrators that they were going to do so; that's unclear...

OH, you mean this article:

Google Traffic Takes Down Web Site (http://slashdot.org/articles/04/02/05/0019218.shtml?tid=126&tid=149&tid=95&tid=99)

Check this out. I checked the fractal guy's bitch, but it may be in conflict to college's own copyright policies:

Other Internet usage

Rather than copying material from the Internet, it may be more appropriate to provide your users with the URL for the site or sites and allow them to access the information directly. This avoids all risk of copyright infringement.
