The VP up and quit on Monday. I have like a snowball's chance in hell because the industry I'm in is all old white republican male but I expressed my interest anyway. Had a good solid lunch meeting with my boss.

Now all I need is patience and a reality check that he'll probably fill the position with another semi-talented white guy.

Hey, just ask him if you're planning to fill the position with an old white person. Mention you're half white, half his age and twice the talent! <_< . Ok that was a weak attempt at humor.

Good Luck and kick some boooootay.

It's an extremely small company. About $10 million a year. For commercial construction, it's dinky. But they take on extremely cool projects. Sake breweries, science museums, etc.

How did it go? When do you find out? Saw your 'Career' reply in the Women's forum. Do you think having this promotion would prevent you from spending as much time as you would like with your family?

Good luck with the process :)

No, not yet and not, not really.

The company is really small, like I said. We invested a lot of money, time and energy into the VP. He turned around and abandoned ship because he couldn't perform and his ego was bruised. What makes the situation worse is that the VP was someone we had worked with before and trusted. My boss feels really betrayed. He's going to need a couple weeks before he can even talk about the subject.

Odds are, if the position opens up again it's going to go with someone with more field experience and a male. I know how it works.

On the other hand, I'm sufficiently covering my rear. I've been working on a proposal for restructuring the company so we're not as vulnerable. Even though work isn't really plentiful in a down economy, we have enviable operating costs; we've survived and taken over jobs where other companies our size, or even a little bigger, have buckled. However, the VP screwed us by abruptly dumping the clients he was supposed to maintain.

As you can imagine, I'm writing myself into a better position in my proposal. The rest should unfold over a month. Regarding time; I'm lucky in that I work as needed. Some weeks I put in a full 40 hours, some weeks I hardly work. It's one of the reasons the company is successful at keeping down overhead. My family is all very supportive. If I landed an executive position, or an exceptional job they would pitch in to make it feasible.

Today was our first real staff meeting since the VP blazed a trail back to his old company. The good news is the prez laid it out on the table that he was considering me for the job. The bad news is he's pretty sure I'm not going to get it.

I'm not good at this patience thing. Maybe I should have taken a job with Customs even if it was a clerk. Gov't bennies and all. If I work my way up to agent I can carry a gun. B)
