Anybody here took general chem, o-chem and physiology?

I'm planning on taking these courses in the future, and I've heard that o-chem is killer because there are lots of memorization required.

In addition, how's physiology like?

i'm a physiology major. it's very fun. you basically have to understand the principal that every action has a reaction and that the body is striving to maintain a constant dynamic balance to sustain life.

then you build upon that.

o-chem is pretty much rote memorization.

kittygirl,

So for O-chem....is it pretty much similar to general chemistry...just knowing the structures of chemicals? Are the exams mainly open book and open notes? (I really disliked memorizing the atomic weights of the elements back in high school).

it'll differ depending on the course you're taking, ... but it's a lot more like memorizing how different molecules will react together. i can't really say that it has much in common with gen chem, other than some basic stuff you need to know from gen chem to understand orgo... basically yeah, it's just a lot more memory intensive.

for us, it was most definitely not an open book kind of course. usually it's not, 'cuz the point is to have the stuff memorized. it's kinda more like a course called "where chemistry fits into biology!".

YB, are you a bio major? 'cuz if so, I would say, consider orgo one of your most studying intensive classes and pair it with a few easier courses. physiology will prolly be easy so it'll go well with that. I *woudln't* pair it next to something really time consuming like, for me, genetics, which had a lab which required me to come in for a few hours every day.

if you're just taking science courses for fun, I would tell you to skip orgo.

o chem is very diff then the general chem courses. i started college pre med and got weeded out by o chem. unbelieveable amounts of memorization! never open note or book. very time consuming course. it was like 3 hours lecture, 1 hour discussion, and up to 5 hours of lab a week, and it took up so much more time outside of that. and i took the easier version that non-chemistry/chem.e majors took.

yeah. i took an auto-tutorial. the book is still one of my hugest science books... and i've read it cover to cover. it was about 12-15 hours of studying a week at least.

i'm sorry i'm being really vague on the details. after you graduate, the specifics of which pieces of knowledge belong to which course kind of melds together.

o-chem also involves 3-D perception later on. if you have a knack for seeing things on a three dimensional plane, you'll have an easier time than if you don't.

I took General Chemistry 1 & 2, but didn't take the other courses. Neither class was that bad; Should be easy 'A' courses. I think I took the version of the course for Chemical Engineering majors. The labwork was contained in a separate class at my old university.

i am pretty good with microbio, immunology, and biochem classes, o-chem i struggled with probably because i should have studied way more.

3-d perception is a must

No, I'm a business major.
Was planning to do a career in law,....but changed my mind and go into optometry.

Of course, for any medicine field, you need to take science courses.

Oh well...I think all your folks' information on O-chem is scaring me!

My sister also told me she breath and lived O-chem. I guess I will have no life next year! LOL

I will need this 3-D skill anyways for the OAT exam.

Do any of you know how I can get a head start on strengthening my 3-D perceptual ability?

im takin general chem right now and i hate it..its not that hard but its just so boring to me..i took o-chem and physiology in high school..o-chem was long and confusing if u dont pay attention..take the extra time out to study and you;ll be fine..physiology was so much fun..i guess im more of a life science person

O-chem is different because it's not like any other science course. Really, it's more like learning a langauge, a very nerdy and geeky language. To learn a language, you have to memorize words and grammar before you can put sentences together. All the different types of molecules- ketones, aldehydes, alcohols are the words, and the grammar are the various reactions that can make these molecules- SN1, SN2. If you take that approach and keep up with the course work, you should be fine. And remember to study O-chem really well, if you can't get into med-school or whatever, hey at least you can learn how to make cocaine and purify it!

O-chem is really, really, a big pain in the ass. Plan on not having a life while taking that class if you want an A. I hated those classes. A lot.
