along those lines... i'm making thanksgiving dinner for the first time. my family always bought roast chicken from the store since it wasn't a big thing so now i have not reference for my turkey goodness.
anyone have any tricks? particulaly, any ideas on how to keep turkey from drying out in the oven?
i'm going to be using recipes from butterball.com (and improvising)

my mom uses bacon strips
to cover the turkey halfway through.
and i read in marthastewart.com
that you can soak a cheesecloth
with the marinade and then use
it to cover the turkey.
i'm making lots of different types of stuffing
biscuits and stuff.
chutney and relish.
augh. FOOD!!!
yum.
good luck with the the turkey jen!

i've made the mashed potatos for the past 2-3 years. garlic mashed potatos that aren't all the way smooth. i like little lumps. yummm.
one of my best friend's moms is home without either of her kids for thankgiving (son is in chicago, daughter's in new york), so i'm gonna stop by their house with some sort of baked goods for her.

filet mignon with mushroom sauce
mashed potato and gravy
pumpkin pie
shi fan w/sweet potato
pork neckbone soup with daikon
sao bing (using lard this time, was asked to do so)
some shrimp simply prepared with some ginger and green onion
I thought I could get away with the steaks and traditional Thanksgiving sides but I know my father-in-law's tastes better than that.

I was all, like, totally confused, and then I, like, realized you were saying that you had to throw in Chinese sides even if you were not inflicting turkey on him.
And then I'm all, like, I don't even care, can I, like, go to her house for Thanksgiving dinner?

I'm a big gravy fan as in, I like some potato with my gravy rather than some gravy with my potato.

Gravy is a universal positive modifier. It makes everything better. The greatest weapon in any arsenal of condiments and the key to world peace.

Ditto. My mom did it the same way this year. I don't know what she put in the turkey stuffings this year, but it kinda salty.

i had all the normal stuff including clam chowder.
my second dinner, i had the normal stuff including some short ribs i thinkg and some pilipino meat dish. then some pilipino desserts. one thing i couldn't eat was this weird sticky rice thing that was black in color, gelatin in consistency and tasted like those black jelly belly licorice jelly beans. voice like ashanti, body like beyonce, face like andre *uGh*.......
i didn't eat enough pumpkin pie. imma hit up costco and pick one up.

I love gravy
I also love that cranberry sauce that comes molded to the can so when you take it out it is can-shaped.
I love pumpkin pie and ate about half to 2/3 of a pie in the past few days.
I also have a newfound love for microwaved Krispy Kremes (which I had never eaten before) and ate about 3 of those at a time, thus practicing for my rapid weight gain to obesity that will take place once my metabolism slows down.

GRAVY IS GOOD. Taters with gravy and ham and turkey with cream of corn and clam chowder is YUM YUM. Add yams, a baked potatoe with cream cheese and chives, topped with bacon bits, and some ground hash, and corn bread.
*stops and wipes drool off his chin*
Gah... why can't everyday be thanksgiving?
