my nominations are most definitely:

castlevania (the ones where you get limited continues and no saves)
ghosts and goblins
super ghouls and ghosts

*Playing Enter the Matrix as Ghost is a bit more difficult than playing Niobe, unless you have the hacking codes.

not really... you just have to rely more on guns.

well, i was mainly referring to games where there was no saving feature or password feature. all you get is continues and limited number of lives (like contra)

When we were young, our first game system was a Chinese Nintendo. Living in the states, that meant, we didn't have access to alot of games. So what games we did have, we played the hell out of.

I remember my brother and I used to be able to beat Contra in 2 player mode(significantly harder, since you can kill your own teammate by leaving the screen too fast) dying once(me =(). Single player we both easily beat it without even dying. But we're pimp like dat.

battletoads, megaman 1, and rygar on the nes were all dang near impossible without cheating.

Battletoads was my death. After the warp for the turbo cars, which got you on the surfboards, that Killed me.

Erm.. I would say that beating Diablo II on HELL is INSANELY hard.

also any FPS game with one life and only your basic weapon (aka knife, crowbar, etc.) But then again who the hell plays like that?

Also... Ragnarok Online. It wasn't that it was near impossible to beat (cuz I don't think you can.) It's damn near impossible to LEVEL.

battletoads was pretty tough. the part where you had to jump over pits and spike walls.

diablo 2 isn't too tough, or so i remember. more annoying than tough. if you get the right group and you are fast with the quit and save option ....

HAHA, rygar. shit, i didn't play that, but my brother had to leave the shit on overnight because there was no save feature. he eventually beat it somehow... but was there unlimited continues?

when you play a poorly done Halflife SP mod (im looking at you "The Gate") they are extremely difficult to play when the coding sucks

gran turismo 3

You want a driving game that makes Gran Turismo 3 look easy? Try Ferrari F355 Challenge- that is really difficult. It's addictive though, once I set a lap time I have to beat, I will fucking play that game until I get it.

For me, I have yet to do any of the following:

Beat Super Mario Brothers 1

Beat Life Force without the 30 life code

Beat any computerized chess game

Beat Tekken 4 in the arcade with any character except Hwoarang

woohoo, did the first two. i saw a music video the other day that just showed a clip from mario 1. the guy went through the entire set of last stages (8-1 to 8-4) without stopping his foward progress. it was unholy and i felt dirty after watching it. you should watch it.

my friend and i could do life force without the 30 life code. that's a damn good game... i didn't think anyone else had heard of it.

James Bond: Nightfire
There are no saves. If you want to take some time off from the game, you have to start from the beginning.

ugh talk about consoleitis

why dont they friggin make you put in "passwords" while their at it

You mean the Taiwanese nintendo right? the one with cartridges of about half the size of a normal Nintendo game?
I had a bunch games from it. The advantage was that they were wayyyy cheaper than regular nintendo games

That would be Super Mario Bros. 3, although I don't think it was quite as ball-busting as Super Ghouls and Ghosts or some others. It was also just very time consuming (unless you're the guy who beat it in 11 minutes like in that other thread I started).

Did anyone ever beat the first Contra without using any continues or using the secret Konami code (that everyone knew) at the beginning that gave you 30 lives?

Man, they made that game insanely hard for some stupid reason. I remember getting it the Christmas of '91, I was all excited. I ended up crying cause I couldn't get past the turbo tunnel and that one level with the hypno ball thing chasing you. Though it did have some tight music tracks though.

hmm, looking back, were these games artificially hard? cuz these days its easier to master 3d games, in 2d it was much more harder cuz you'd die so much easier and u only had so many places to move

Games nowadays (at least on consoles) are easy as @#$#%. And even if you have the coordination of, say, Zangief on rollerblades, you can always rely on good ol' www.gamefaqs.com, brought to you by the only people in the world with less of a life than you (you as in the people looking up the information) and/or the programmers or makers of the game(s) themselves. I have always preferred and always will prefer old-school 2D (doesn't matter what genre...fighting, platform/adventure, RPG, whatever) over this new flashy 3D realistic stuff. Although many of the 1st person shooters are definitely entertaining for a while (like Goldeneye and Halo). Not much of a PC gamer tho since I never was able to get into it for some reason...

yeah problem is that one might still play mario years from now but i dont see me playing doom then. the graphics just show its age way too much. whereas 8 bit its simple enough so u dont care

i'm gonna go out on a limb and say an overwhelming majority of ppl find a GF/SO .... but not everyone will beat mario in 11 minutes.

but that also begs the question .... who'd want to?

Nothing, if you want a manual on how to beat a game and so you don't need to think. I never go there until AFTER I have beaten the game once, so I can see what I missed. Or if I stopped playing the game for months and need to refresh on where I am.
