I don't know too much of Asian music (kpop, jpop, cpop) but In the United States and all over the westernized world, females in music videos and mainstream artists have been depicted as sex objects (Britany Spears, Modanna, etc).

Does this still hold true in Asia? I do know there are many teenagers who are pop stars in Asia and one of the main reasons that they get stardom is by their physical appearance. But are they still viewed with the same sex appeal?

I'd say that females are objectified in Asian pop music to an even greater extent, especially in K-pop and J-pop. Female Asian pop idols all have that wide-eyed squeaky chirpy submissive dyed-hair image. That stereotypical Japanese anime girl look didn't arise outta nuthin. I also think that Asian pop music is simply imitation of a facet of American pop music (but not as broad or diverse), but that's another debate for another thread.

ditto. i always accredited that intepretation to me being too white though. i like some of it, sounds good but it's like you said... imitation American pop. which isn't all that to begin with.

How are females objectified in the music? How they are viewed as submissive? To me the music videos and music are like fiary tales, two random people fall in love because of fate and live happily ever after. But i dunno, I haven't seen or heard a lot of Asian pop.

It's sex, sex, sex, all day long, all the time.

Pretty soon, Asia is going to be like America-everything needs to sell by sex....even shampoos.

i don't think women are as objectified (not to the same extent and not as often) in Chinese music videos as they are in American music videos. just go to a Chinese karaoke and check out those videos. there's a lot of emphasis on being thin and pretty, but there's just simply a lot less emphasis on being sexually enticing in Chinese pop music.

objectification doesn't necessarily have to mean SEX. is there any chinese/ japanese/ korean pop star who is not pretty? there are plenty of american pop stars who aren't attractive (like Melissa Etheridge). I heard from a friend that one HAS to look good to succeed in HK pop music; if that's the case, then I think HK pop, at least, objectifies women more, because a large part of their success is based on physical aspects rather than their personality.

alright, but the original post of this thread defined female objectification in the media as depicting women as sex objects. and i'm saying that women in HK pop media are not nearly as often depicted as sex objects as they are in American pop media. flipped through a collection of videos at a Chinese karaoke. it'll be rare that you find random girls running around and dancing in bikinis.

is it possible that the definition of what is sexual and enticing is different in HK media? (i honestly don't know... i've never watched any asian music videos)
