I have finally crossed over. Since my sophomore year in high school, I've been wearing glasses whose lenses seem to be getting slightly bigger each year. And because I'm such a pussy about touching my eye balls, I've stayed away from wearing contacts.

Until now.

I still wear glasses. I prefer being able to take them off and have the world go fuzzy for a while. But I do have dailies for wwhen I wanna wear sunglasses.

This one time I was sitting watching TV when I blinked and felt one contact go under my eyelid. I ran to the bathroom to get it out. I was tearing up in that eye because of it, so when I put it back in I didn't see the contact falling off my fingertip. I felt a burning sensation, so I tried to pull it ou but that hurt even more. I did this for about 5 minutes before I spotted the contact on the counter with my other eye. I'd been poking myself in the eye the whole time!

So I threw the contacts out and went to go find my glasses.

I wore contacts for two years. The only thing I hated about it was having to clean them everyday. Whenever I would get drunk I'd either leave them in while I slept which meant blurry contacts the next day, or took them out and lost them/ripped them/didnt wash them well enough.

(I know, I know. I AM a geek)

I think they are a great fashion accessory.

I like contacts. I'm never getting that surgery thing. Laser + Eyeballs seems like one of those combinations your mother told you to avoid putting together.

Plus, I know somebody whose eyes got seriously screwed up after surgery. His vision is now worse than before, and glasses don't help. *shudder*

that's way too much.

$1000 per eye tops. the average is about $800 per eye from a F.A.C.S. opthomologist who has done a fellowship in cornea, cataract and refractive surgery.

the two most basic and important thing to look for are:

1)a doctor who completed his residency in ophthalmology.

and

2)he/she also completed his/her fellowship in cornea, cataract and refractive surgery.

the fellowship is one year after residency. the doctor learns refractive surgery techniques from a lasik specialist. there are some general ophthalmologists out there that completed his ophthalmology residency, didn't do a fellowship, takes some weekend courses on LASIK and performs it. too big a risk to take when it comes to your eyes.

that's some serious performance anxiety. oh wait, this is about contacts.Well how would you like a 40-something optometrist's assistant peering over your shoulder as you're trying to gently ease it in, peppering you with comments like (and these are direct quotes):

"Keep it open! You're letting it close too fast!"
"Don't be afraid! It won't hurt you."
"It's like a magnet. If you nudge it at the right angle, it was immediately attach itself."

I remember my visit for the contacts vividly.

Optometrist: You're going to have to open your eyes wider.
Me: Is that supposed to be an asian joke?

I'd want referrals. I want to talk to the owners of the eyeballs he shot lasers at.

hahah... that reminds me of the first time i went in for contacts. the doc checking out my eyes was Asian. after playing with my eyes for a while she looks back at my lid and says, "Huh, I didn't notice this at first but I guess you're kind of Asian?"

I had LASIK. It's free for those of us in the military. The surgery was relatively painless, and so was the recovery. I now have 20/15 vision.

Yeah, I also got tired of having to take off my lenses before sleeping and spending big bucks on disposables so I got it done on october last year. It wasn't painful and it took about 10 minutes. Now I have 20/20 vision

It cost me $800 total (for both eyes) in South America

I got laser eye surgery when I was 18. It's now 5 years later and I still have 20/20.

I was one of the test subjects. Haven't gone blind so I guess that's good.

I remember that while I was living in England there was a big controversy when it was discovered that female soldiers could get boob jobs on the government's dime (err ten pence). If American soldiers get LASIK for free, can they get the boob jobs too?

I was quoted $1600 per eye about a year and a half ago. That was from a very reputable eye clinic here. I may do it in the next year or two. I'm really too afraid of those $500 specials I see advertised.

I wore glasses from fourth grade to senior year in HS, and then I got contacts. I wear those most of the time, and keep a pair of glasses on the side, because sometimes I have allergies that make it difficult to wear the contacts.

nah man...contacts the bomb...just get a pair of trendy glasses when u want to alternate days or feel lazy putting contacts in...i like having the option to look "different" one day, and different the next (yeah, sounds lame, i know)...

back to lasik, my friend got it done couple years ago. he's fine and all, but couple funny stories he told me...he was awake when they did the surgery and "smelled the laser burning his eyes!" also, after all was done, they "suctioned (sp?) his eyeballs w/some vacuum type thingy!" man, mad weird...

All true. Loved the suction machine (it's what cuts the flap of your eye open). My vision went out just like in Terminator. The burning flesh of my eye smell was a little disturbing, but if you've never smelled burning flesh now's your chance.

ive been wanting to get laser surgery for a while now. after the surgery is done, what happens to the piece of cornea that they cut? does it grow back? or do you have a whole in your eye?

There are several different forms of Laser Surgery available. They offer us in the Army LASIK and PRK. The Lasik only creates a flap in your eye that the surgeon opens up to apply the laser. Afterwards they fold the flap back over your eye and it heals.

PRK uses a brush that removes the flap entirely thus requiring the eye to grow a new layer (much longer recovery time). The advantage of PRK is that the flap tends to be stronger than in Lasik patients.

oh, how long does it take for the flap to reheal or grow back?

I heard that too...that you were awake when you got the surgery and they you could see them firing the laser into your eye and you could smell something burning.

I think I wanna get it, but my dad said that there was possibly a newer better technique that just came out.

I've been wearing contacts since I turned 13. This was 13 years ago. Never had a problem with them, putting them on and taking them out is second nature to me.

You have to be careful for the first thirty days, but the flap starts healing almost immediately. The flap of my left eye got a little wrinkle in it on the first night, so they had to lift it up the next day and put it back in place. I'm on day 90 now and haven't suffered any significant problems with my flaps. At first I had a lot of halos around halogen and neon lights, but that has since diminished. All in all my surgery has gone well. I have to schedule my 3 mos check-up this week.

i got contacts in 7th grade.
i used to wear those one month
disposable ones without taking
them off at all. i did that up till
my sophomore year of college.

it fucked up my eyes.

now i can't leave them on for more
than 24 hours or my eyes get all
red for a few days.

oh and i only wear dailies now.
