Oh that makes sense. I've never seen that slogan in kanji, only English so I can't really tell.

rofl, this reminds me of some of the shirts i've seen that have garbled english or really wrong word choices on shirts in japan. some of the photo's i saw could have been doctored but i remember one of a girl in a "shiteter" shirt (i assumed it would have been shiteater, but still, i don't think the girl would necessarily have known).

The other ones...my op on it is that they make these for non-Japanese (guys) who can't speak or read Nihongo and wanna be five-minute conversation pieces when they go hang out with Japanese people...then the joke is over and the guy is left sitting between people sucking on a beer and poking at his lukewarm gyoza, saying nothing and waiting for the next Japanese person (hopefully a girl) to talk to him in English.

Thank God I know Japanese and don't have to use last resort measures to get people to talk to me! If these things are really selling, I should get off my lazy ass and design my OWN gaijin t-shirts!

Yeah, the red one says 尊皇攘夷 (sonnou zyoui = respect the emperor and chase away the savages) like thaite said. The brown one says 変態な哲人 (hentai na tetuzin = like, perverted wise man, I guess). Yeah, it actually does say hentai, just a different way of writing it than the usual 変体, refers more to sexual perversion.

The phrase was used as motivational propaganda during the Meiji restoration / revolution. Commodore Matthew Perry sailed into Edo bay in big black warships like the ones pictured.

you should try something like a dedicated anime site. i think yuhei participates in a few. yuhei is the guy in a post on the first page of this thread. there is also an A&E forum that would be fine for anime topics. there are some already there i think.

blah... not everyone disses on anime here in YW. Granted that's because some of us actually watch it. It's another thing if all you talk about is Anime, and how you wanna be just like YuGiOh, or Vegeta... then you need to stop watching, and live in reality.
