This is irrevalent to the topic, but I did contact KCAL about Anna Guo awhile back, and I got very rude responses.

Could you tell me more about the "rude responses" you got back?

The reason I'm asking is because they failed to put up an article relating to Japan's earthquake that occurred in Hokkaido today.
Did you e-mail them? Send them a simple message (which I did tonight)?

KCAL is PURELY anti-Asian.

Just watch their news. Also see if they have any true Asian news anchors (besides that Asian female sell-out).

what i can say is that every major news station in los angeles failed to give adequate coverage to the korean perspective of the l.a. riots during its 10 year anniversary last year. kcal 9 included.

Oh wow, now KCAL uploads this crap article after I've sent them a message asking why no article was posted.

Big whoop. KABC and KNBC posted an article WAY BEFORE KCAL did.

KABC has Asian anchor people. KCAL doesn't.

I could go on and on about why KCAL (C with a communist sign - hammer & sickle) seems to be racist or "patronize" Asians.

I have sent them a message from their website NOT through e-mail bonehead.

So why did they post the article AFTER I've sent them a message? Maybe people like you are easy targets of KCAL. HAHAHAHA yourself.

KASIA:

Thank you. I know KABC, KNBC, CNN Headline and other local news stations in cities such as Seattel, NYC, Chicago, San Fran had articles about the Hokkaido earthquake.

The only odd-ball, KCAL, didn't have that article. And I am still waiting for a response from them.

just to be fair - yes they do.

i don't like l.a. news stations in general, but i'm still not sure why you single out KCAL9.

both of them are kcal9 news anchors. they're on every night.

so...i'm still a little confused as to why you single out kcal9.

Hey g-string. I'm didn't know you work for KCAL. SOunds like you do. However, I dislike the way they portray Asians one news when they commit VERY "minor" crimes.

Maybe you will agree with me when your dad or mom..OR YOU...get portrayed like shit on their news channel.

DO you know her name? I didn't know the producer was Asian. She or he (mostly females) is truly a sell-out to allow KCAL to take LONG video footage of a Korean female handcuffed in the back of an LAPD tuna can police car.

Also to allow a black scum bag to make fun of a Vietnamese bank robber on TV. That really irked me.

Question. How do they portray people of other races who commit similar crimes? Are they just generally pro-police and anti-crime or do they specifically target Asians and/or other minority groups? Or is it just this one incident?

As far as I can tell from their website, KCAL is an independent news station, therefore they do not have the network prime-time programming to compete with the networks. Their direct competition is CNN and FoxNews Channel, so they have to distinguish themselves in some way. Perhaps a pro-police, more conservative presentation of the news draws a niche of viewers they're interested in.

If you don't like them, do 3 things: 1) Write and complain, 2) Don't watch the station and 3) Don't support their sponsors.

Yes, I know her name and she's a personal friend of mine. But if that's gonna be the attitude and manner in which you deal with people, you can pick up the damn phone yourself and find out, because I'm not subjecting any friends of mine to someone like you.

Please don't take this too personally because I'm really not trying to be mean but you really need to tone it down. I'm referring mainly to how you are attempting to express your thoughts and viewpoints. It's like you're yelling over every last person who presents counterpoints to your arguments to drown them out. You also have a tendency to take a bratty tone and borderline personal swipes at people that you should be debating with. Heated exchange is fine but there's no need to go on the offense because your argument is weak.

I can definitely feel the passion in your expression but it's a total turnoff when you wrap it up in insults and half-thought out remarks. There's no way I can make you think any differently, but I would ask you to please consider if your goal is to effectively rally support and increase awareness to issues important to you and possibly important to the Asian American community that you re-examine how effective your communication has been in threads like this.

There are many people on these boards that have put in long hours and their own resources to tackle issues in the AA community. Please calm down enough to speak with them rather than at them in an insulting manner.

Thank you for at least hearing me out, even if you don't agree with what I said.

Sure, can...though I think you're smart enough to analyze what I said.

First of all kitty, the news here in Los Angeles is f*cked up.
KCAL is a very GOOD example of a f*cked up local news station.
And somebody mentioned before I brought up the KCAL issue, she received a "rude" response from KCAL about the Annu Guo incident.

Anyhows....KCAL portrays Asians as evil people. I brought up the Vietnamese bank robber example (NO..this is not the CHP incident I talked about in a separate thread). Basically, the KCAL reporter went to one of the bank robber's neighbor, who happened to be black, and showed him the video footage of his neighbor robbing the bank. The black neighbor said, "Oh my God, what a loser. I got to show this to my other neighbors." Boy, have I never seen this kind of sh*t in my entire life! I've watched local news in NYC, Chicago, Seattle, Honolulu, and Dallas, and have never seen this kind of cutt-throat racist sh*t towards Asians.

Somebody brought up the fact that the producer of KCAL is Asian (which REALLY irks me....such as sell-out).

Another example is the Jon Young-Jai Yee (however you spell his Korean name) incident where he was "accused" of being a spy for N Korea. He was arrested at his apartment in Santa Monica...West LA area (also home of rich-hill billies). ANyhow, KCAL...yes..this goddamn news station goes around Mr. Yee's apartment, asking his neighbors if he has friends, what did Mr. Yee do on a regular basis (um KCAL..it's not like his neighbors will talk sh*t on TV) and what he did for a living. Then the next day, the KCAL anchor talked about Mr. Yee, called him a reclusive male. What the f*ck! I mean...gosh..Mr. Yee is from Korea....has limited English skills....people in LA are pricks (which makes it hard to bond with them)...and only has Korean friends. What does KCAL expect?

Oh, and when a white man is accused of murder (like that old moron who plowed through a Santa Monica shopping area near 3rd St. Promenade)....they go to his neighbors...and they say ONLY "good" things about that suspect.

I have yet to see KCAL go around a white or black suspect's neighborhood....asking what he or she did on a regular basis....ask if he has a social life (which makes LA a commie city)....and ask stupid questions like "does he say hi to you" Stupid stupid stupid questions....

now, i think it's great that you posted examples. this gives people a clearer view of what you're trying to say. however, don't you think it's a bit unfair to compare a black bank robber to a white man who was having a heart attack, lost control of his car, and ran over people? one act seems intentional; the other does not.

How do you know the old guy didn't intentionally ram into the people at the marketplace?

Heck, he could have had a bad day ...and decided to "go for a ride."

that's possible, of course. but kcal9 doesn't play any role in what the individual is arrested for.

the cops decided to arrest the allege bank robber for robbery, and kcal9 so reported.

the cops decided not to arrest the old man for murder, and kcal9 also reported accordingly.

Speaking of LA tv news shows,

do female anchors still wear flashy clothes? (or is that only during Xmas season AM, which is the last time I saw them)

Yangbahn... thanks for the info, I wasn't trying to be snarky ... you were just referring to coverage of certain events and I had no idea what you were talking about. This helps a little better.

As for what the neighbour had to say about the Asian bank robber -- what the guy had to say was maybe negative, but it wasn't racially derogatory in any way. The guy was laughing because the bank robber tried to rob a bank and got caught -- yah gotta admit that that's kinda funny.

As far as what they showed as far as what neighbours have to say, aside from them being too different stories (the guy who has a heart attack and the bank robber), one is an "accident" and one is a crime... and that's the spin they were put on the stories -- I'm not convinced it has much to do with race, especially considering the white guy probably has medical proof that he suffered a heart attack.

Either way, it is rare for neighbours to say anything negative about a person being arrested for a crime, but usually they don't even bother to interview a neighbour unless they're looking for a positive or humanistic side to the story. Basically, I think KCAL was maybe more guilty of sensationalism than racism, but only as guilty as any other news network.
