What do you YW tech gurus think about wireless connection?

And what's the difference between the A, B and G connections?

not to get into it, but simply put, "G" is the fastest wireless technology right now. it's still not as fast as a direct wired connection, but it's fast enough for broadband access.

i think it is great if you have a laptop that you want to use anywhere in your home. otherwise, just stick to wired connections. it's also great if you have an XBOX or PS2 that is far away from your router.

I have a wireless connection in my house. It rocks. I can use a laptop just about anywhere in the house. Maybe even my frontporch.

B is the original. It's got an 11 megabit per second transfer rate.

A and G both transfer at 50 megabit per second. However, A is only compatible with A cards, while G can be set up to use B cards as well as G. G is more universal, and the top-rated wireless hub that Apple puts out uses G.

A and G are actually 54mbps. Yuhei said G can be set up to use B cards as well as G, but it's more accurately explained by mentioning that 802.11g is backward compatible with 802.11b. That's to say if you have a 802.11g OR 802.11b wireless access point, you can utilize an 802.11g OR 802.11b wireless adapter in your computer.



Still, nothing beats having a Gigabit Ethernet network at home. If only I could find a use for that much bandwidth....

on the practical side, G is better than A b/c it operates at a lower frequency (2.4 GHz instead of 5). this allows G is travel through more walls. also, since it's backward compatible w/ B, u could take your laptop to coffee shops and still be able to use it (although i hear that G is being adopted). the A spec does have an advantage in actual speed over G, but it's not great enough to warrant getting A.

My understanding is that A isn't practical for home use. I use an ibook and have wi-fi set up with 802.11b, that's the original airport at 11mbps. It's plenty fast enough for streaming videos, online gaming and downloading porn. It's not quite as fast as a regular ethernet connection, but for what I use it for it's negligible. G is what apple is pushing as "airport extreme" and other companies are following suit and as YC and 537 already mentioned G is backwards compatible with B so if you have a G enabled computer you don't need to downgrade it to log on to a B network.

turn on your mac address lists and WEP your broadcast. gotta protect yourself. :D congrats on it.

WEP isn't even secure... but unfortunately is the most most people can set up. Consider all your traffic as public unless you're using EAP or IPsec. For authentication, RADIUS would be the best choice.
