are straight guys threatened or intimidated by gay women, specifically more butch looking ones? or is it just unknown territory so they stay away?

Not all straight guys are intimidated by gay women. I suppose the ones who are "afraid" are simply being difficult and treat the whole thing as a perverse novelty of sorts (i.e. "Look a butch lesbian! Let's run!")

I don't know. People can be stupid at times.

Well butch lesbians face violence and harassment by straight men quite often. It's not uncommon to find dozens of incidences of harassment toward lesbians throughout the US. Obviously, these straight men feel justified in picking on butch women, because some of them may be even less butch than the lesbians.

I can't say I'm personally threatened or intimidated, but...just SOME of the heavyset butch peeps look like they can throw down some major whoop-ass if they wanted to...

I hang out sometimes at this SE Asian restaurant located in the West Village that has a solid gay clientele and the majority of the customers are lesbians. They are all shapes, sizes and colors, and all of them are beautiful to me, but you'll see a majority of Black/Hispanic lesbians hanging out. And those ladies, butch or femme, get BIG.

No seriously, they can give a sumo rassler a run for his money.

Now, when you come face to face with that, you really DON'T wanna start shit with them and maybe some of that presence can translate into automatic intimidation.

So, it's mostly like that. On the same boat, the Asian lesbians I've met there, mostly Filipina and Chinese, maybe some Korean, don't have such an imposing physicality, so you wouldn't think, even for butch, "intimidation."

BUT lest you mark me for generalizing, yes I have run across some large Asian lesbians who can match their Black/Latina sisters, pound for pound.

I wouldn't say that being "butch" should be equated with large physicalities, though. My friend Jade, who is Filipina/Chinese and who runs the restaurant, seems to be the butch in her relationship with her girlfriend (I never bothered to ask, it just feels like it is) and she's a slim-shortie. It's her attitude that makes her seem butch and she doesn't suffer shit from fools that get in her way...

Matters of size aside, the rest of the lesbians I've met are fine enough to make ME wish I was a gurrrl...

In my opinion, straight guys are indeed afraid of butch lesbians. That is why they act the way they do towards them. I have encountered one too many situations with straight men where they have been complete assholes, and therefore I don't waste time on them. And yes, a lot of butch women are man haters because of their experiences with straight men. Why would butch women choose to like straight men or even try to be nice to one, when they have done nothing but put butch women down and treat them as if they are aliens from another planet? Of course, there are the few out there that have the brains to be conscious of the fact that (butch women) are still women, and deserve to be treated with just as much respect as feminine lesbians.

Those scary butch lesbians out there are only scary to those who judge by appearance. If straight men actually took the time to get to know a butch lesbian, instead of going of the fact that "they are weird or scary, and wanna be men", then maybe those scary butch lesbians wouldn't be so scary.......but instead may be really cool people to become friends with.
