Happy Mid Autumn Festival!
There are several Chinese legends surrounding the Mid Autumn Festival. one of which (and i think there are actually different versions of this legend) is about a beautiful woman that lives on the moon. Here is a link (http://www.chinavoc.com/festivals/Midautumn_Le.htm) to that legend.

Eat lots of mooncakes! (But not too many because they're really fatty.)

Happy Mid Autumn Festival!

Right back at you.

Went to the SF Chinatown festival this past Sunday. Nice time.

Just had a wedge of moon cake for the first time in a couple years. Reminded me of why I've avoided them for a couple years.

right now i'm eating some yam stuffed w/ rice. :-) i've been eating mooncake for almost a week or so, though, so that's not gonna be quite as fun, but still fun enough. :-D

yeah i totally forgot about it until last night. i just don't remember festivals unless i see signs of it in the places i traverse, or people around me are mentioning it. i don't live in an area with a high concentration of Chinese people, and i've been pretty busy to socialise lately.

this just makes me miss HK, because you'd never miss the fact that a Chinese festival was coming up.

i remember when i was a kid in HK, we'd carry around paper lanterns.

and kids would boil wax in a can until it explodes. :p

i don't know if it's mainly a Chinese thing. that's why i was asking if other cultures have this same festival. but if it was a "moon festival" that you went to, then it's probably the same as this one.

did you eat mooncakes?

it's not just coincidence that the moon festival falls on the same day as the korean and japanese holidays of ancestor tribute right?

Too bad, now the HK gummint broadcasts smarmy public service announcements reminding us that boiling wax is against the law. Complete with whiny little brat squealing, "older brother, PLEASE don't boil wax! waaaah!"

Boiling wax is not even very popular in M'sia, so I never saw it done before. But now I'm tempted to try just cuz of that commercial.

No it's not.

The moon festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar.

In Korea it's called Chusok and is a day for revering your ancestors.

In Japan it was actually split into two holidays. After the Meiji government tried to westernize everything, they started having Obon on August 15 (the 15th day of the 8th month of the solar calendar). While the practice of worshiping your ancestors (Like in a che-sa) is all but extinct, people still visit ancestral graves on the original day. Neither are national holidays, but are both important cultural days.

how long does mid autumn festival last?

bluemonq

^ these days it's usually just one day, although i suppose they used to make a few days of it.

i don't know if it's mainly a Chinese thing. that's why i was asking if other cultures have this same festival. but if it was a "moon festival" that you went to, then it's probably the same as this one.

the "mid-autumn" version of the name works better; i believe a point of the festival (besides celebrating all of the legends, although i could be wrong) is to celebrate after the harvest has been completed. since many asian countries used analagous lunar calendars, it would make sense that their harvest times would co-incide.

my $0.03...

EDIT: inflation i guess. im not going to fix it...
