somehow i find going into work late, even 30 minutes, satisfying. it's not that i get any more sleep, i usually end up staying up later and getting less sleep.
i know that at most jobs being timely is really important, especially retail jobs. but at my office it seems like we can come and go as we please, as long as we get out work done. i like it.

I used to be an InfoSec contractor and I could afford to show up a few hours late at a client's office because "I had an emergency to deal with from another client." Cuts on the billing hours, of course, but that's OK. :D

I hate to go to work late. I do it out of obligation. But in the winter, you leave in the dark, and you feel like you've missed the day light being at work. :pissed:
What is this "getting to work on time" concept? I don't think I know of it. ;)

How about going home late? Or not going home at all? Some people live in their offices. I heard that a few law firms have beds for their employees!
You can never be late if you work with a flex-time schedule. Yay!

That was supposedly the trend with some some software development companies during the tech boom. Glad I never got into those.

A lot of Japanese companies do that. They have bed 'pods' in the wall. You give the attendant your name, pod number, and wake-up time, then you slide in and grab a nap.

Bed...pods...
Sounds very "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" like.
Some corporations have nap rooms. One of my friends worked in an office that had one. I don't know how they work, though. "Uhh.. boss? I'm really tired so I'm going to take a 2 hour nap in the middle of the afternoon."

You already said that.
What's wrong with taking a power nap during lunch or a break? No need to stay at work all night. The floor sucks.

The contractor we had for our house was Taiwanese and his son was a few years older than me. He went to Bowdoin College for a year or two then transferred to Dartmouth. After coming back to the Bay Area, he got a job working at an corporation that does intercontinental business. Since he had to be in contact with people abroad his hours were kinda tough. He started something like 4AM. At his office they pay for your meals and totally cater you. They have nap rooms too, since they don't want employees to leave the office.

these nap rooms sound totally sweet but nothing beats having your real bed right next to you when you work. the latter is my happy circumstance. :)

My last job, they wanted me to come into work by 10 am for a couple weeks. Normally I'd say screw you. But my friend begged me to work there... so I did... went in at 10am the first day, that really sucked. Next day 10:30. Then 11:30. Never A.M. Again...
Previous jobs, I'd usually go in around 1pm...earlier if had lunch plans! :)

So would y'all rather have to go into work late and work longer hours, or would you beat the chickens to waking up if it meant shorter workdays?

So would y'all rather have to go into work late and work longer hours, or would you beat the chickens to waking up if it meant shorter workdays? After being unemployed for so long, I have a much, much different perspective about work. At my previous job, there were no set hours, unless I was working on a project (which was friggen rare), and even then it was usually by 9 or 10am.
I try and get in the office by no later than 8am every morning now and I'm usually here until about 7 or 8 pm.
Going into work late can be a nice luxury if you've been constantly used to having to deal with a school schedule and tardy slips or something...

i don't know why - but i've never been on time to anything.
ab says that people who are always late think that they are better than other people.
i actually just like to sleep in.
besides - i stay later than everyone else, so haven't i earned the right to come in a little later??

i agree w/ ab.
the place i'm working at now, if your more than 5 minutes late... you get a 'tardy' ... and if you are late more than 2x a month they start docking your pay. (its not a retail job, in case your wondering)
a big change from my last job that let you come and leave whenever you felt like.

Maybe the typical office schedule doesn't apply to lawyers. But I still think it's totally unprofessional to arrive late to a meeting with a client. It takes a little bit more effort to handle the logistics of getting somewhere on time.

Where exactly do you all work that you can come in late, leave when you want, etc? Either it's the most laid back office ever or you own the business yourself or something. The only job I have like that is advisor for Purdue's student newspaper, and even then I have to go to meetings on time.

Lawyers live by the billable hour. If you bill enough hours per year, no one cares when you get in and when you leave, although the later you stay the better you look. This means that if you get in late and stay late, you look better than someone who comes in early and leaves early. At least in most law firms.
Client meetings are different though. In the end, law is a customer service industry and you serve your customer. If you're late, you're costing your client time...and as everyone knows, time is money, so you better not be late and bite the hand that feeds you.
Other than that and court appearances and other meetings, as long as you get your work done, you pretty much set your own hours...for the most part.
The partners may look at you strangely and disapprovingly if you keep, 8 PM till 8 AM hours though...
