View Full Version : Finding a job

Does anyone think looking for a job is like a job unto itself? I seriously spend hours a day just looking up law firms, their recruiting policies, their summer programs, and their contact information. This is not even including time spent sending out my resume and making up cover letters.

Do you guys find this is true when looking for a new job?

Looking for a job is more work than doing most jobs.

I agree with Craig's assessment. Even with the advent of email I still prefer to send out paper resumes and cover letters unless the company specifically requests that all employment related correspondence be conducted via electronic means. Call me old fashioned, but I think paper works better.

I also like the taste of stamp and envelope glue.

Its soul destroying to be honest.

Well I'm sure you might be doing a freelance gynaecologlist, but how does that help people find a job? :P :P

i think that's the best way to look at it. When you know finding a job
is like a job in and of itself or even more, you can be focused and determined
at the task at hand. I've read plenty of job resume and interview books
and that type of attitude was mentioned in many of them.

Good luck with your search!

Yeah it does, I've been on final shortlists for positions paying £30000 a year and then having to drop down to one position where I was earning less than half that just to get my foot in the door.

shit, ain't that the truth. the worst is having to maintain a positive attitude when you talk to people on the phone when, in the back of your mind, you're thinking "yeah whatever, like you're going to hire me. fuck you, too."

Don't even get me started. I get irritated at the kinds of questions they ask in interviews too, you know the ones they read off a list: "Why do want to work here?" Cause I need a fucking job, cause I need to pay rent and don't want to be homeless, cause I need to eat! WTF kinda question is that?

Almost is bad is when you have to resort to slaving yourself out to a temp agency in a state that has no laws protecting temporary workers. Those asses rob you blind and there ain't shit you can do about it if you don't live in a state that has enacted the Temporary Workers Bill of Rights Act.

well i understand why they ask a question like "why do you want to work here?" they don't want to hire someone that just needs a paycheck. they want someone with a better reason. but the flip side of that is that everybody gives them bullshit answers anyway, so the point in asking these types of questions in the first place is moot. :P

Exactly and they should know it's gonna be a bullshit answer from being on the other side of the desk. No one who was every genuinely interested in hiring me ever asked this question, it's usually theose people who decided that they are not gonna hire you when you walk in the door. If they're interested they'll talk about you and your experiences more if they don't give a shit they read from the list of questions to ask the rejects so they won't sue.

two words: perpetual student. keep winning fellowships or whatever. wonder if anyone's ever managed to do that? just stay in school for their entire lives as students and never have to actually get a job but just live off TA stipends or something? that'd be sweet. :D

yah, maybe if you enjoy being poor all the time :P

MIT's average grad school stipend is like $1500/month. After you pay the rent, utilities, and groceries, you got like $200 or less to play around with. Wanna take a vacation next month? That means you don't get to go out at all this month. Got a hot date? Hope your toilet doesn't clog up for the rest of the month and land you with a plumber's bill.

Besides college would start getting boring after the frosh girls stop seeing you as a super-senior and instead start putting you in the category of "dirty old man picking up younger girls."
