a friend of mine has just lef the country, with nothing but a backpack and an the desire to see the wonders that lie outside our shores.
or to be more specific, he decided that the confines of law and the world of making money for other people, while tied to a suit and kissing partners' asses was not for him.
so off he took, his degree still crisp from printing, and already he's had so many adventures. he's redicovered his passion for design and will probably go to a design school in berlin, after that, teach in japan...and who knows what else.
i guess my question is...how many of you would have chosen some other course to follow, if cicumstance and 'reality' hadn't pushed you here? which road would u have taken?

would a better question be, "what would you do if you were rich enough so you or your family never have to work another day of your lives?"

jaded SWK?
I would be an actress (well, maybe a struggling actor)
or a writer/journalist (travel or food writer, or entertainment)
But alas, I am chicken shit. I have a degree in Economics and I'm planning on law school. Not to say that I'm not excited about the prospects of a legal career, but I know my Econ degree was a huge mistake.
One of my good friends is living in France, in an artist colony for 4 months. Then she is off to Manhattan for art/design school. How I envy her. <_<

What does being Asian have to this with this? :D
Anyway, my passion lies in politics and I'm perfectly comfortable where I am and where I'm heading right now (i.e. toward the UN/WTO.)
But if I can choose a second passion, it would be archaeology. I've always loved studying about ancient lands and would doubly enjoy searching for ruins, documenting existing ones and anything along similar lines.

if i was able to take a different path...
i wouldnt have minded being able to take the study of agriculture, crop production, or something like that...
yeah, being able to buy a plot of land... being able to live on a plantation... and making a living as some type of farmer... has always been kinda like a side interest/fantasy of mine... yeah, sounds kinda weird... but its true...

Hmmm.... if I didn't like art, and computers in general, I would probably would have been a youth counselor. Although I'm sure I'd get headaches everyday, I probably would want to help people out every so often.
If not that... maybe a writer/journalist. I can somehow see myself in front of a computer, slaving away to meet deadlines, while going to cafes with my friends commenting on how the world is wrong, etc, etc. I wouldn't want to be a writer/journalist for the job, but for the lifestyle. :D
I wouldn't mind being a photographer for a magazine. You get to travel, take pictures of things, and get paid as well. I'd probably dig that a lot.

Well I'm about to go to college, and I'm definitely feeling the heavy expectations of my family weighing on me around me, and I'm an only too so that just sucks.
I'm probably gonna end up doing poli sci and being a lawyer or something to that extent or else become an editor in a newsroom. It's basically down to those two, but I don't think I'd mind doing it. I'm glad I'm not like some of my friends that are being shoved toward med school even though they don't want to go.
If I had the money and time I'd lot to throw down everything and just backpack through different countries and discover passions and pursue them. I'd be interested in doing stuff in Film and Entertainment, but I know I'd live a probably finiancially strapped and unstable life if I wanted to work in that industry as an AA woman, even just as a woman and not be able to provide a respectable lifestyle for me, much less my folks.
I'd want to be a musician...preferably a drummer.

what does being asian have to do with this...?
i would assume that somebody's passion is their passion because they enjoy doing it, not because they're asian.... so, if i wasnt asian, i would probably be doing the same thing im doing now. except maybe i'd be wearing more eyeshadow.

Because a lot of Asian parents basically decide what their kids are going to do for them, regardless of what they're passionate about. If its not practical it's not a factor.

Oh, I see. My answer still holds. I also assumed the thread starter had to do with "glass ceiling" or anti-Asian sentiment issues.

Oh. I get it. Well I'm not about to let my parents dictate my profession, so my answer remains the same. Recording industry, here I come!!!
Either way, my mom and dad both have their preferences about what they think I'd be good at and what they think I'd enjoy, and I'm glad to say that they both take my happiness into account when suggesting professions to me. I've actually given a lot of thought to what they think I'd be good at, but they're very supportive in my capacity to decide what I want to do for myself.

I love cinema, especially films about the human experience. I wanted to pursue filmmaking as a career, but my parents would have killed me.
You can do what kevin smith did... sell all his stuff, including his car, get a whole bunch of friends as the actors, and record on b&w film. Making a movie on a budget....
But yea, I've given that a lot of thought too. But before I'd do anything, I'd probably see if I can make a short with the handycam I have a home, before I venture into a real film that I'd wanna take to sundance or what-not.

do u guys feel that a lot over there? i think it's an issue sometimes, but definitely depending on which field ur entering...haha the hospital on going to is FULL of asians, we even have asian vending machines.
but yeah, my friend who's now backpacking, always loved design, but his parents kinda pushed him into law...which of course, he did get something out of...i mean at least he tried it and can now move on. i've always wanted to do med, so it's not too bad for me...i do regret not doing more arts...i miss being creative, but i guess its something u can always do in ur spare time (argh i sound like my mum)...not that i'll have any spare time soon...and this past year, doing a thesis has been really eye opening, i've realised i how little i know...about everything. i'd love to be an acedemic..hehe but i can't write for shit...i think i just like learning...and being challenged to THINK (vs remember)...i could audit classes forever...
edited because i can't spell for shit either
