<P>I'm pleased to announce a new forum, tentatively titled Acceptance, and will feature sub-forums on Gay & Lesbian issues, culture/diaspora (coming soon), and mixed race (Hello Hapas! is moving there), the underlying theme being an exploration of different identities within all things yellow. In fact, I was planning on calling the forum "Identity" or "Identify"...but given some of the "mainstream" attitudes towards Gays, Lesbians and mixed Asians, "Acceptance" might be more fitting...(of course I might feel differently tomorrow or something).<BR><BR>I'd like to encourage everyone to give the new forum(s) a friendly welcome, and also urge y'all to check 'em out on occasion, even if you might not immediately identify with some of the topics -- but just know that others do, and by respecting them, YW can continue to strive to be hater-free:)</P>

Personally, I don't like all the layers, but if you're going to call it anything, "Acceptance" is cool.
Beats the hell out of "Tolerance".

Well when you have a ton of forums on the main page, it can slow everything else down...
Yeah, I'm not totally sold on "Acceptance"...I kinda liked "Identify" too...

I don't like "acceptance" at all.
While many mixed asians may say that their entire life is a struggle for justification and acceptance within AA issues, I'd say that there are quite a few who are over that. I liked it better out in the open, when it was Men, Women, Hapas.
I don't mind the extra click to get there, but I don't like how it is grouped now, you might as well call the new forum "outcasts", cuz no matter what you name it, it seems like it's there to fill a quota to be PC. Like a corporation's website would do with the "Equal Opportunity Employer" link.
That aside, I think that "Identify" is better than "acceptance".
But identify means more to the hapa forum i would think.
Acceptance applies to both, but implies that both are something wrong that you need to gain acceptance for.
How about stealing an idea from KoreAm and calling it <i>"A Different Slant"</i>?
I am interested to know why you think that the grouping should be like this. And what exactly is going in the diaspora forum?

yeah i think "Acceptance" is a bit cheesy, but i also couldn't come up with any alternative.
so do people like "Identity" more?

The initial hesitation I had towards "Acceptance" was its possible patronizing tone I think the intent was pretty clear. You could look at it as overkill, but from my perspective, I see it as more of an affirming message. But again, as I mentioned before, it's completely up for change...I'm not sold on "Acceptance" or "Identity"...<BR><BR>One of the things I'd always initially felt about the "Hello Hapa" forum was that it also had a lot to offer other Asians who were coming to explore their own identity, while at the same time were having to deal with a certain amount of intolerance from the larger group -- that was one of the similarities I saw in grouping the Gay & Lesbian and HH forum together like that. Remember, it's an Asian site, so we're going to be perceiving it in that sense, not just as being Gay or Lesbian in it of iself, but what it means to be an Asian who is Gay or Lesbian today.<BR><BR>Radford might be able to tell you more about the direction of Diaspora...

Oh, btw...the idea behind grouping forums into sub-forums like that is to reduce the number of 'em that show when the forum loads...and because having a gazillion forums on the main page turns people off.

Make a poll and we can vote.
So far we have Acceptance, Identify, Identity, A Different Slant.
Any other ideas anyone?

Radford might be able to tell you more about the direction of Diaspora... <BR>by the way, how about calling that "History and Tradition" instead? <BR><BR>i'd like to make that forum consist of discussions on asian historical events/people/etc and traditions.<BR><BR>eugene: what i'd like to do with that forum is to write short articles on asian histories and such, and generate discussions on them. by the way, i would love for people to contribute their own writing as well, because my own interest has only mostly been of east asian countries (namely CJKV... and singapore :P). i don't know how much traffic i can generate because let's face it, most people think history is boring. but at any rate, i won't have the time to start doing this until around mid-June. <BR><BR>by the way, i know you and AB might be thinking that it would end up being a forum about Chinese history, but i definitely don't want to steer it in that direction. and i actually know more about Korean history than i let on. :)

I don't like the "acceptance" label either. Personally, I don't see what's wrong with just putting the hapa, gay, and "diaspora" forums on the front page. I don't think it would look to long.

I think it's bad to make 'em sub-forums, if only because Hello Hapas barely had any visitors to begin with. I think people would post to them more if they right on the front page.
Also, I'm a little uncomfortable with the idea that I am something to be 'accepted'; I understand you mean it in a good way but that word can also mean "to endure". If that's the case we should stick the Women's forum in there too :P .

how about Negotiating Identity or Negotiating Culture? Because a lot of hapa and GLBT culture and the other stuff is even more a process of negotiating a place or a culture than of "asian american"-ness in general. I dunno, i realize this would piss off conservatives, but not really, because even conservative hapas are negotiating a place for themselves. and yes all asian americans and all people to some extent negotiate their identity, but i think for the new forum's subjects, it's even more prominent and perhaps even conscious than for others.

The new title "A Different Slant" is much better. Hat's off to whoever came up with it...

I'd like the forum to be called, "Recognize Our Identity."
