Dear Friends,
In order to help health workers in China do their jobs, YellowWorld.org has launched a site http://sarsfund.yellowworld.org for a charity drive to donate money to buy masks, coats, and other protective clothing for Chinese health workers. We have set up a PayPal account for this purpose so that all you need to do is click on a few links to donate to this cause. The donations will be sent to the SARS Mask to China Donation (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sars-mtc/). SARS Mask to China Donation is an organization which is spear-heading an effort to send protective gear to Chinese health workers.
As you probably know, for the past few months, Asia has been plagued by the disease known as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS. The disease is thought to be caused by an easily transmitted flu-like virus. Experts believe that this virus is very robust and may actually survive outside of a body for more than a day. So far, a vaccine for the virus has not been found, and it is expected that it may take a long time for a vaccine to be found.
As of today, the World Health Organization has reported 7,548 cases of SARS around the world, where 573 of these cases resulted in death. Since there is not a vaccine for this disease yet, we can only attempt to contain its spread. The virus was first reported in China and China has been hit the hardest by the virus. 5,086 of the reported cases have been cases within China and approximately 20% of these cases are of health workers. SARS health workers in China have been working tirelessly for the containment of the virus even though they are very aware of the high infection rate amongst those who are health workers. As more health workers are infected, hospitals become even more understaffed, and the job of containing the virus becomes more difficult.
Each set of protective clothing for a health worker must be dispensed of at the end of a shift, so they need as much help as possible! With most of the reported SARS cases currently in China, health workers in China are literally the first line of defense against a global outbreak of this disease. Please visit http://sarsfund.yellowworld.org/donate.html and take a little time to donate to this cause!
