View Full Version : Side Business

Aside from your own careers and aspirations, would you consider having your own side business? I MIGHT take over my parents' small restaurant and make major improvements in management. I have friends who are considering owning their own stationary boutique... but it's hardly in the planning phase. =) My boyfriend just invests in stocks and seeks to diversify his portfolio as a side business. Any thoughts about this topic?

anything is possible. i'm in IT right now but i definitely don't want to be limited to it.

but current ideas are - IT/QA outsourcing to china. IT recruiting in china for multinational firms. export/import. business consulting in china (for both mainland companies that want to go into the US market, and multinational companies that want in on china).

most current and do-able idea right now is web-based system for real estate agents, both to manage their client contacts and properties with, and to let them have a web-presence.

I would like to open my own law boutique and eventually reach a point where I can gobble up smaller independent firms and have offices all over the world. I've also played with the idea of using my info-sec training to start an IT consulting company.

But the UN and the ICC are my priorities.

me too :) that's my total dream.

as of now my fulltime job is running my school,
i just bought a bar, so that'll be my side business,
but it's quickly becoming almost a fulltime job.

i still do want to open a flower shop, that'd be
so much fun.

it's so relaxing to walk in flower shops unless someone is allergic to flowers... that would suck.

I'd love to do something in the IT area.. perhaps incorporate that into the restaurant business.... but I still need to develop the IT side of me. Still a student in this area. =)

you don't really need that much technical knowledge if you want to do business. you just need to know people with good technical knowledge. running a successful business is all about getting people who do things better than you to do those things for you.

but technical knowledge would certainly help, if you're starting from scratch in IT.

One of my former co-workers owns a side-business selling high quality imitation watches online. I mean, these were replicas of Rolexes and similar ilk that sold for almost 100 bucks a piece.

He made the mistake of operating it out of the office though, lowering his productivity. He got fired for it, but he made more money from his side business than his real job.

I can't think of anything I'd want to or be able to do that isn't illegal, aside from import/export, where the market is already kinda crowded.

How about importing and exporting rare goods and curios? You can travel abroad in search of these things, have many Indiana Jones-esque adventures, buy 'em and sell them to rich people who don't know better.

Kidding aside (Indiana Jones, that's is) selling curios isn't a bad idea, really. You can be an antiquities dealer of sorts. I know I'd buy silly, meaningless, and dusty old things when I'm filthy rich.

Or just filthy. Whatever.

i'd like to own a cafe.
not to make tons of money.
but a small place.
make enough to break even.

where my friends can come over
and hang out.
with comfy sofas.
and relaxing music.

Making your way in the world today
Takes everything you've got;
Taking a break from all your worries
Sure would help a lot.
Wouldn't you like to get away?

Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name,
And they're always glad you came;
You want to be where you can see,
Our troubles are all the same;
You want to be where everybody knows your name.
making my way downtown
walking fast, faces passed
and i'm homebound.

staring blankly ahead
making my way
just making my way
into the crowd...

i would like to work downtown
in a firm
so i won't need a side job
but i will still volunteer on the side.

i would like to open a kumon learning center.

i would also like to open a sound-supermarket - where every motion made is accompanied by a assigned sound. like steps - depending on the weight of the person - "squeak squeak" or "bong bong". a separate sound for each item taken off the shelf. and so on.

Just trying to sort out the capital at the moment.

Theres loads of suckers out there willing to pay full price for things over here in London when I can get them for at least 40% cheaper in Asia. :lol:

i'm going to start my own franchise of learning centers, where kids will get their asses kicked if they misbehave. it'll be called The Total Discipline Center.

Takes too much effort. You have to train the kids to kick each other's asses. Then you can sit back and let the money roll in.

I always liked telling kids about the realities of the world that they'd learn eventually when they grow up, although this acceleration of knowledge is really a reward. Stuff like "what's on the inside doesn't really count. You're ugly and PEOPLE WILL HATE YOU." "People change as they get older. In all likelyhood you'll turn fat and PEOPLE WILL HATE YOU" is another favorite. Then telling them that crying won't stop it from happening.
