On ESPN they're doing a special on the Bulls first NBA championship -- over my beloved Lakers. I distinctly remember this series, thinking that even after the first game, in which the Lakers won (Sam Perkin's three pointer at the buzzer), that Los Angeles was in trouble. The Bulls just seemed faster, hungrier...after they lost Game 2, it was all a blur, one of those things to sweep into the recesses of your mind.

Another thorn: Notre Dame trouncing USC in 1988 in Los Angeles. The teams were #1 and #2 and it was billed as the national championship game, Rodney Peete v. Tony Rice and the option. I had yet to see SC win a national championship in my life (or at least as long as I was following them) and I was hungry as hell. Who woulda thought that an SC defense that had stomped on Oklahoma the year before would be unable to handle another option team...

And don't remind me of the Dallas Cowboys v. Seattle Seahawks in 1989, the year the Cowboys went 1 - 15. It was Troy Aikman's rookie year and I had such high hopes, but loss after loss began to wear me down. Finally, by the time they met Seattle on national television, I was ready to burst. After they lost a very close game, I began to cry like a baby...

when Korea played against Netherlands and got defeated 5-0 in France 98.

That was a very sad and depressing day, I still carry the wounds to these days

Another one: Korean v. Germany in the last World Cup. Right from the start, the Koreans looked so energized...I thought they might actually win. And then as the game progressed, they began to lose all of their energy it seemed...I had a feeling that the back to back games would wear 'em down.

us losing to syracuse in the final four... i was planning to play bball afterwards, but i lost the will to.

also when the u.s. lost to germany in the world cup. i really thought that the cinderella story could have gone at least one step further.

and i'd have to say that in general, watching anyone getting a compound fracture is painful to watch.

1992 AFC wildcard game -- Houston Oilers Vs. Buffalo Bills. The Bills pulled the greatest comeback in the NFL history. To me, watching that game was like a slow and painful death. :frown:

It took Wayne Gretzky to get the Los Angeles Kings to their first Stanley Cup finals appearance, but what would it take to get past the Canadiens to win it all?

Montreal didn't sport any standouts like the dynasty teams of the past – no Larry Robinsons, no Guy Lafleurs, no Jean Beliveaus. But they had a spectacular goaltender in Patrick Roy, and that would be one of the major obstacles for the Kings.

Of course, Game 1 was not an indication. Gretzky and the Kings scored three first-period goals and stormed to a 4-1 win at the Montreal Forum. It was after that game that Roy made a statement – the Kings would not score on him again in an opening period.

The turnaround
It comes earlier than usual, but it is nonetheless significant.

Already having dropped the finals opener, the Habs trailed 2-1 in Game 2 with 1:45 remaining and coach Jacques Demers made the bold move to have Marty McSorley's stick checked by referee Kerry Fraser. Sure enough, the curve on the blade of McSorley's stick was illegal – a quarter inch more than the legal half inch.

With McSorley in the box, Demers pulled Roy for a 6-on-4 advantage and Montreal defenseman Eric Desjardins' goal tied the score at 2 to force overtime. Desjardins connected again in the extra session – the first defenseman to notch a hat trick in the Cup finals – to give the Habs the win.

The victory took the life out of Los Angeles, which would fight out of a hole the rest of the way. After Game 2, Roy would not allow a goal in the third period. The Kings were forced to come from behind in every game – 1-0 in Game 2, 3-0 in Game 3, 3-2 in Game 4 and 1-0 in Game 5.

The second game would be the first of three consecutive overtime losses for Los Angeles before falling 4-1 in Game 5 in Montreal. The Habs won their first Cup since 1986 in a series that would be Gretzky's last Cup finals appearance.

The MVP
Patrick Roy. The goalie allowed only 11 goals in the five games against the Kings, and finished with a 16-4 reocrd and 2.05 GAA for the playoffs.

What was uncharacteristic at the time was Roy's off-ice presence, proclaiming to his team after the second period of Game 4 that he would not allow another goal in the game.

The challenge sent a message to his teammates, and the Canadiens would not lose another game, just win the Stanley Cup.

Even though i was only 13, this will go as one of the worst 8 days of my life. However i vow that the kings will win the cup in my lifetime

The last 3 Mets seasons. How's that for pain.

If I could think of one game, it would be Miami vs. Ohio State. Refs makes a crappy call against Miami when it was supposed to be their winning TD.

1993 World Series. Phillies aganist the Blue Jays. Game 6, Jays lead the series 3-2. Phillies up by 1, bottom of the 9th inning. One runner on, Mitch Williams pitching for the Phillies and Joe Carter hitting for the Jays. Carter hits a home run to end the game and series. Man...what a terrible ending to a great season by the Phillies. That homer just broke my heart.

1988 World Series.

Dennis "8 Innings" Eckersley on the mound.

A's: 4
Dodgers: 3

Ninth inning. Two out.

Man on second.

2-2 Count.

Kirk Gibson hits a homer that literally removes my soul from my body. The A's never recover either and go on to ignominously surrender the series to the Dodgers.

I've been crying ever since.

I distinctly remember Game 1. I was at the Torrance public library doing homework or some bullshit like that. For most of the night, I was hearing from friends how the Dodgers were getting their ass kicked, and then suddenly, miraculously, they had won the game...

Come on, even if you're an A's fan, you've gotta look back on that moment as a great one in sports history... :D

The A's came back to win the Series the very next year and went to the Series again in 1990. The Phillies didn't have another winning season after 1993 (no playoff, just winning) until 2001.

When I tried to clear a cornerkick out of the goal area with a header and own-goaled my team during the quarterfinals of a soccer tournament. We pulled the rest of the match off okay and made it to the finals, but I never lived it down during the time I was with that team.

Not one that was heart-rending. But watching the Raiders get their asses handed to them by the Bucs at last year's NFL Superbowl was hard to watch.

Luckily I'm a Niners fan so I ain't crying about it. :D

Wasn't hard to watch at all. I laughed my ass off all game long.

Kind of like the last World Series. That Game 6 choke and Game 7 collapse was like a cornucopia of Schadenfreude for me.

I got key locked from gaurd position. I forgot to tap out. As a result I hear a *snap* in my elbow. I was out of commision for a couple of weeks. It hurt like a mother.

For me, it was the 1996 ALCS
Orioles vs Yankees

The Orioles are leading and Jeter comes up to bat. He smashes the ball. Tarasco runs back to the wall to catch the ball, (or at least get it after it bounces off the wall), and it is promptly caught, by a 13 year old kid, Jeffery Maier who had reached over the wall to grab the ball with his glove. The referees rule it a homerun rather than a ground rule double. The Yankees win the game and instead of being down 3-1 in the series, they have tied it to 2-2.

This is where my absolute hatred for the Yankees began.
