so... i've just went and bought a monitor. now i need the rest of the stuff. anyone have any suggestions on what kind of a machine i could build for around 900-1000 dollars? i've spent lots of time at dell/gateway, but i think that me and my friends could make a better one for the same amount of money.

Because that was his price range and 2.8 outperforms a 2.2 but a massive amount. Not to mention it can be overclocked to nearly 4 ghz.

2.8 i think ur being a lil enthusiastic thats not out last time i checked the fastests P4 is 2.53 right now dork. 8/19/02. the 2.8 wont be out for another month and will cost 600$ or so when released. For a student i'd go a lil mid-low end most arent rich.

puahaha! damn, i was like 2.8 ghz?!?!?!?!
well here's what i ended up making anyway:
p4. 2.0ghz 533 fsb (there were higher ones, but i didn't want to break 1k on it)
intel motherboard (no asus, but still okay, came w/NIC onboard)
80 gb 8mb buffer eide 7200rpm
16x dvd rom
40/12/48 burner
256mb rdram
soundblaster live 5.1 (not the greatest, but i don't need anything too big)
i ended up gashing myself on some of the metal parts when i was trying to install it... :o
