PHOENIX -- Amare Stoudemire won the NBA Rookie of the Year award Thursday, the first player to do so after coming to the league directly from high school.
The Phoenix Suns forward -- quick, powerful and barely out of his teens -- beat out Houston Rockets center Yao Ming, last year's No. 1 draft pick.
Stoudemire received 458 points, including 59 of a possible 117 first-place votes, in balloting by sports writers and broadcasters. Yao finished with 405 points. Caron Butler of Miami was third with 179. The players received five points for a first-place votes, three for second and one for third.

no question in my mind that Stoudemire deserved it.
hopefully Yao can become stronger over the summer, and really kick some ass next season.

Amare deserved it, but I thought Caron Butler deserved second. I was very familiar with Caron's play all season:)

amare had better numbers.
better one guard? marbury vs francis, debatable.

better numbers? they had identical stats in the regular season
G GS MPG FG% 3P% FT% OFF DEF RPG APG SPG BPG TO PF PPG
yao 82 72 29.0 .498 .500 .811 2.40 5.80 8.20 1.7 .38 1.79 2.11 2.80 13.5
G GS MPG FG% 3P% FT% OFF DEF RPG APG SPG BPG TO PF PPG
Amare 82 71 31.3 .472 .200 .661 3.00 5.70 8.80 1.0 .76 1.06 2.30 3.30 13.5
as u can see, they are exactly the same, cept yao had .7 more blocks and amare had .5 more rebounds. and i go with the blocks.
and as far as who is better, stevie or marbury, marbury avged more points, more assists, and a better field goal shooting %. and he led his team to the playoffs while francias could not.

how about you tell us why yao deserves it more than amare since you seem to be in the minority.
the votes were close. it's all personal opinion.
settle down, son.

IMO....if the suns didn't have amare, they wouldn't have made the playoffs. and as you can see the rockets didn't make the playoffs with yao. that's the real difference as i see it. if it was the other way around....rockets make it and the suns don't...yao would have been rookie of the year. that's my 2 cents

u settled down son, i am perfectly calm. i would agree with sOKaLiBoY about the fact that amare's team is going to the playoffs and yao is not. That might have been the thing that gave amare the edge, but i just think it has alot more to do with shawn marion and marbury rather than amare. in comparison with the rockets, the suns just have a better team. So amare gets more credit than he deserves. But that goes with winning. Anyways i was just curious why all of you guys feel amare "deserved" it because nobody really gave any reasons untill sokaliboy. And how Chasiubao_Boy said amare had better numbers when he did not. I'm just standing up for Yao.

Yao not winning Rookie of the Year is not going to hurt his career. Chill out. I agree that Yao should work out some more, not to go too off topic here, but I think that's why Kevin Garnett is having a hard time handling Shaq, Shaq's big and muscular and KG is lanky. If Yao were half as buff as Shaq then he'd be kicking ass for real.

Yao has been named 'ten most outstanding young person' in shanghai/or china, and went to a hospital to see the frontline against SARS.
