Intel Rival AMD Launches 64-Bit Chip
By MATTHEW FORDAHL, AP Technology Writer

SAN JOSE, Calif. - In the biggest gamble of its 33-year history, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. on Tuesday launched a high-powered microprocessor that aims to offer server makers an alternative to rival chip-maker Intel Corp.'s chips.

During the chip's formal unveiling in New York City, International Business Machines Corp. said it would offer a server based on the AMD's new Opteron processor. Microsoft Corp., meanwhile, repeated its promise to offer a version of Windows optimized for the chip.

A number of smaller vendors also announced support for Opteron, which can process data in 64-bit chunks instead of today's 32-bit standard found in most of today's midsize servers.

It's a new approach for AMD, which has mostly followed Intel's lead in the semiconductor industry. Unlike Intel's 64-bit Itanium processor, the Opteron can run today's 32-bit programs without suffering a hit in performance.

"Today, 64-bit computing is available to everyone. There are no more barriers," said Marty Seyer, vice president of AMD's server business. "AMD has set a new standard for price performance. And we have reduced the cost of computing significantly ... With the AMD Opteron processor, we have changed everything."

Still, AMD faces considerable obstacles. For one, the firm best known for its Athlon processors for personal computers must prove itself as a reliable supplier for enterprises. And, despite financial difficulties, it must continue to improve upon the chips.

If successful, AMD could crack the lucrative high-end server market. From there, the company hopes to cascade chips to other uses, from laptop computers to supercomputers.

Looks like I was wrong about AMD. They appear to have their act together in the Server CPU industry....They are apparently poised to end the Intel reign for the time being!

Check it out!!! (http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_8796_8799,00.html)

AMD has a bad track record for making money. not to say their designs are bad, but they just don't seem to be consistently profitable. hopefully this turns things around for them.

speaking a AMD, i just ordered an athlon 2400 system. it better kickass when i get it or somebody will have to pay.

Intel is about to launch a new chip too. Forgot the name. But one of the really big deals about AMD is that IBM is working with them. That's what is really going to kick Intel in the nuts. I think IBM will also be working or producing some of the newer Apple processors but I could be wrong.

Intel is working on the Itanium 2, which will support 64-bit applications/OS architecture. However, backwards compatibility is rumored to be a big issue with the new core structures....

There are also talks about Microsoft endorsing the AMD 64-bit processor for their new Windows XP 64 operating system.....talk about getting something snaked right from under your nose, Intel!

NVIDIA Corporation today introduced nForce3 Professional, the company’s first single-chip, core-logic solution for professional computing environments. Optimized for the new 64-bit AMD Opteron processor announced earlier today, nForce3 Professional platform processors provide a compatible, stable, and reliable computing platform for professional workstation users who wish to exploit the benefits of both 32-bit and 64-bit computing environments.

“Professional users demand compatibility, stability and reliability from their workstation platforms—features that NVIDIA has been providing for years with their NVIDIA Quadro family of professional graphics solutions,” said Dr. Jon Peddie, president of Jon Peddie Research, the leading multimedia market research firm. “The launch today of the NVIDIA nForce3 Professional workstation solution is an important milestone in transitioning professional users to more efficient and faster computing platforms and should extend the company’s leadership position in the professional computing market, which we forecast to be over 2 million units in 2003.”

Designed for professional computing environments, the NVIDIA nForce3 Professional platform processors incorporate advanced technology solutions, including enterprise-class networking, fault tolerant storage designs, and optimizations for NVIDIA Quadro workstation graphics solutions—which are currently supported by an industry-leading selection of certified software applications. All NVIDIA nForce3 Professional-based systems and motherboards utilize the NVIDIA Unified Driver Architecture (UDA), a single stable system image for simplified deployment and upgrades in the enterprise environment. The NVIDIA commitment to product longevity further ensures IT investment protection. NVIDIA is partnering with ASUSTek Computer Inc, a world leader in motherboard engineering and design, to bring NVIDIA nForce3 Professional-based motherboards to the market.

NVIDIA nForce3 Professional-based motherboards are currently sampling to workstation system integrators worldwide.

there's no love between amd and ibm tho. and still, amd has to get down to i think the 90nm depleted silicon processes before the deal with ibm is actually useable. their deal is about working to complete the technology for depleted silicon. intel is trying their own route however and apparently has been having nothing but snafu and no progress.

i don't know whether ibm is going to try and work the depleted silicon for mac chips or for other purposes.

i'd love it if microsoft promoted amd with their new longhorn os. in fact, that would kick major ass. however, joe sixpack will still need to be told that he needs 64 bit for either of them to take advantage. tech geeks will typically jump all over both and put them into their new systems. hoever the joes who have recently bout a computer within the last 2 years isn't likely to want to jump for upgrading to a whole new technology and operating system. this will most likely be the joe's with pIII's (and lower) or low end xp's or lower (duron, tbird, etc).

now what i'd love is braggin rights to having an 8-way opteron server.

Supposedly Apple's coming out with the 970 (a 64-bit processor) within the year... And OS 10.3 / Panther is rumored to be a 64-bit operating system. Here's hopin'!
