I wasn't sure where this topic belongs, but here goes. A friend once told me that she heard Koreans are the ni***z of Asia. I had never heard of that before. But is that true? who/what/when/where/why/how?
Well, I heard the same from various sources about the Vietnamese, Thais, pretty much every SE Asian nationality. Haven't heard it about any of the rim or more northern Asian nationalities. What racial background is your friend? I assume they're not Korean, would be more interesting if they were SE Asian, or even moreso if they werent Asian at all. Really seems more like a self-defined meaning perpetuated to limited distance through friends; I don't think there's a common perception.

I've heard Filipinos describe themselves as the "black" Asians, which I think is sort of a problematic and rather loaded comparison to make. I think Koreans are pretty high on the wealth and status ranks.

Would I be right in assuming the comparison he draws is based on how Koreans here adopt "black culture," as opposed to how Koreans are treated by other Asians?

Not speaking for anybody else but myself, but I don't think Koreans try to adopt 'black' or 'African-American' culture any more than most other Asian ethnic groups. Arguably I feel that pretty much a lot of Asian pop culture tries to imitate U.S. MTV and pop and it just so happens that for the past few years hip-hop/rap and/or R&B has been the popular thing. However, the Koreans seem to have been the most successful in this process of imitation as well as promotion and/or refinement of pop culture, if there is such a thing, whereas let's just say that Chinese and Japanese rap, for one reason or another, leaves a bit to be desired

I know that wearing baggy clothes and looking like a ghetto thug were part of the Korean fashion about 2 years ago, but fashions change very fast in the land of the morning calm. I don't know what I'm gonna see this summer when I get there.
I also know that some k-american kids try to act and dress like blacks simply to look like badasses, but it's just a phase in their lives and once they get into college they'll become prepyp and start wearing J-Crew and Banana Republic.

I think Koreans are the "niggaz"/"niggers" of the Asian community. I personally, think they get played the most on these boards. And well in mid and upper class black communities, we use "nigga'/"nigger" to describe a black person, who fits and/or reinforces the ignorant stereotypes, of blacks.

well, it all depends on who is where. Like koreans in japan i hear they are second class citizens and stuff. But here they tend to be more wealthy/affluent (but also the most gangsta).

I've always felt like there was a thin layer of disdain for Koreans at YW. I'd never really personally experienced it before but I have noticed a similar kind of undercurrent at AsianAvenue. well, everyone knows i don't like ANYONE, even other Chinese.
but it's the Asian pecking order. I'm not sure why, but it's almost like Koreans are like Asian Jews or I guess Asian blacks in that when things go tough, people always take their anger out on Koreans.
i dunno about that, but when i went back to china this past summer, and visited my grandparents in Shenyang i didn't notice any hostility, or general awkwardness towards the koreans in "korea-town." the koreatown there is a lot like that of flushing, ny with tons of vertical signs and stuff. and when i was discussing with my relatives about the make-up of flushing, with the majority being koreans ( I think), they weren't suprised or tried to ask questions that they would had I mentioned the neighborhood was made up of mostly blacks. So no stereotyping as far as i'm concerned in the mainland.

i don't know about koreans being the niggaz of the asian community (since we're tossing around the "n" word so freely in this thread). but, korean women are off da hook. my closest friend is korean, too. his family treats me like their own son.
in the case of me and my boy, we do have bouts of being a nigger (i'm chinese and he's korean). like when we eat so much that we don't feel like doing shit, but lie down, stay immobile and collect the welfare check aka "niggeritis" or the more p.c. term of "da itis." does that count?

What is it with you and this Korean cuteness thing? LOL
Anyways yea over here in the more affluent neighborhoods, you have rich ass kids (including rich ass Asian kids and more specifically Korean kids simply because there are a ton of them in this area) trying to dress and act all ghetto when you know that if they crash their car, their parents will just buy them a new one. I understand that this would probably not happen in a real ghetto. It's just a fad and/or phase I suppose. I never harbored any hate for Koreans...my brother had always came back from the pool hall saying stuff like 'fucking Koreans think they the shit' after beating them in pool or whatever, but when I actually met Koreans in real life instead of listening to what he said, it didn't seem that way at all. My closest FOB friends are Korean and maybe it's just me but I think FOB friends make better friends than American friends because their idea of friendship is stronger and more solid. Strangely enough I have very few Asian-American friends. Most of my American friends are either white, black, or hispanic, even tho my best friend if Filipino. I dunno, I think that the Asian traditional upbringing and more especially the Korean upbringing obviously discourages intermingling not to mention dating with people of other groups, whether it be interracial or simply inter-ethnic, and the message you get from your parents and community is 'we are superior and they are not'. The answer to why this is has a lot to do with history as well. Korea is a country that has always been manipulated and/or pushed around by surrounding countries and their political and economic interests, and it still goes on today. There is reason for why the children are taught to stand tall and be proud of one's nation and to show the world what it is made of. As a Chinese I didn't really experience this type of egocentric upbringing from my parents but they were not very traditionally Asian excluding the weekly trip down to Chinatown and kung fu movies and Chinese New Year so probably there ya go.

The inferiority complex you speak of is not simply a can of worms. As I stated in my previous posts, history explains very well as to just why many Koreans may feel inferior, just as how many of us Asian-Americans would feel inferior to white Americans prior to further educating ourselves. When I grew up in a white area, all I saw was white people, the most popular kids were white, all the hot girls were white, the only Asian kid in my class was this Japanese girl that the other white kids would tease me about, seeing as how we also somehow ended up with the highest scores on every spelling test. Shit, I wanted to be white. Why wouldn't I? All I saw around me at the age of 8 was wonderbread so it's no wonder that i would want to fit in and be like everyone else. Of course I'm gonna be embarrassed when the teacher asks me how Chinese celebrate Chinese New Year. There was no activist group around me to educate me, no helpful propaganda, no sociology classes or lectures since i'd probably have been too young or stupid to understand them at the time. Yea I had an inferiority complex, and perhaps some of us still do because most Asian-Americans were brought up in a society which provided a breeding ground for the inferior complex of minorities. I dunno why it's so hard for people to admit that they feel or felt inferior. Feeling inferior doesn't equate with being inferior anyways.

Possible...
Although I still deem the Chinese to be a very peculiar case...
I( one lovely Chinese girl)....think that the Chinese are the most selfish group of Asians...they(we) cannot even do the basic thing of helping each other out..
The most absurd characteristic of the Chinese yet... is a sense of jealousy towards those who are better...and a disaparage for those that are less fortunate...
"Hen ren you...Xiao ren wu..."
My..such shame...
The lack of political power..lack of positive media representation...have all been in part determined by these disgusting assets so commonly seen in Chinese individuals...
Even had the Chinese population here in the U.S been of equivalence to that of the Korean population...I do not see the Chinese being more of an entity than they(we) are now...

Okay, I'm gonna have to put my foot down on this.
I know I am not the only Korean replying to this thread, but the fact that anyone took it seriously is rediculous.
Come on! I heard Koreans are niggers... is this true?
What the fuck kind of question is that?
Maybe I am being too sensitive and maybe I need to learn to deal with situations where I am the minority, and people in the majority think its okay to trash on the minority as long as it's in jest (sound familliar?), but this is going too far.
I know if anyone ever asked... I heard all chinese are like hooptie driving spics is that true? Everyone here would be pissed at the guy.
Koreans are not the niggers of Asia at all. We are not even wannabe black. Maybe you are getting all your ideas of what korea is from k-pop and movies, but obviously most of you have never been there, nor have you known any koreans aside from those living in the usa.
I know some of you will retort by saying that other koreans didn't object to the question, and my status as a half korean gives me less authority to speak on koreans then they, but that also is a wrong assumption. Everyone who took this thread seriously and acknowledged the question itself should be ashamed.

All right. Let's not get snippy about this. Perhaps we're looking at this the wrong way and in the wrong light. There wouldn't be any problems with inferiority complexes and what not if everyone would just treat each other with civility and proper courtesy. If we're to promote a greater sense of cooperation between all "branches" of the Asian community why don't we start by setting aside the jibes about Community Colleges and troll burning? We should be attempting to create a structure of equal footing for any and every type of Asian and not trying to underscore stereotypes and gross misconceptions that'll have everyone at each others' throats.

Tazadar, I was merely attempting to draw a connection between blacks and Koreans - that maybe these two groups both suffer/have suffered from an inferiority complex, which may have led to my friend saying that Koreans are the N of Asia.
"..blacks are inferior race..." - Why would I have black friends if I thought they were beneath me? As far as I'm concerned, I embrace black people (and everyone else for that matter) and their cultures.

I hope this is easier on the eyes for the readers.
But can we please not close this thread until I get the e-mail? You won't hear a peep from me until then. Promise.
Don't forget to ask who she think the whites of Asia are. Another question for her. Who's the Asians of Asia? I'm betting Chinese, Chinese are the real Asians.
for those who are new here: taz is just kidding.

My Name Is Troll,
I can't wait to read your make-believe friend's email reply. Make sure to post the entire message.

ChinaLama,
I don't know where you get the idea that I have to study for my finals considering I graduated from college 6 years ago. I look forward to getting ban. Put in a bad word for me to AB. Thanks.
taz...why do you keep teasing us? just a couple of days ago, you said you were studying for finals.
first its the man or woman thing. now it's an age thing. taz, even if you are a woman, you're not worth the drama. *shakes head*

She wrote me back so quickly!
It's kinda hard to follow but here goes:
"Yes I heard that in high school from some of my friends who i didn't know until they said that are korean, it was some random convo about who can tell the diference i was confused and didn't know what the hell was going on ans they broke it down to me. and then i heard it in college again. and they explained to me about the thicker hair and the discriminacion that exists among asians towards them. then i heard a joke on some random comedy thing (that i really can't even remember now) but yeah thats where i got that from."
So thicker hair - don't know about that, but I think KoreanHunk mentioned it in another thread? And discrimination from other Asians. Pretty much sounds like achtungbaby hit the nail on the head in his earlier post, although I am not sure if I completely agree with the whole discrimination thing.
From what she writes, it seems as if Korean-Americans have been perpetuating/spreading this idea.

I think K Hunk was talking about thicker heads not hair, and that's common among N East asians.

Tell your friend he is a fuckin moron. Then shoot his ass.
Every asian group descriminates against every other asian group.
Hell, Northern Chinese and southern Chinese dont even like each other.
Someone please close this thread. I think we have all actually become stupider having read it.

I second BeTheReds' suggestion that the thread should be closed. It is clear that the continued existence of this discussion will only serve to harbour further animosity and lower our intelligence.

Your friend is also mentally malnutritioned and grammatically inept. I hope that you don't share her views on this rather controversial declaration.

As an ABC, I hate FOB Northern and Southern Chinese equally because they aren't American and twinkie-awesome like me. How badass can you be if ur communist and live 5 to a room and ur ambition is to be able to haul ass to the river to fetch water and make it back in record time each morning? And esp. those Taiwanese ugh thinking they the shit, even though they wanna be like Japan they think they are still better than Japan and Korea??!! hahahaha Sorry to bust ur masturbatory bubble but trying to be like Japan is not exactly something to be proud of, since it's like kinda being a double wannabe wannabe. Btw, Japanese FOB's are so smart with their technology and nifty cars and shit but still haven't found out how to manage their oral hygiene since they are busy giving oral to the U.S. because we rule like that. Korea is wannabe Japan as well, except they advocate trips to the plastic surgeon like trips to take a dump after an all-night buffet, and base all their pride on a soccer team! Do I need to even go into details about the Vietnamese, *sigh* they just Chinese people who couldn't hack it. How lame can you get if you can't even rise up above the Chinese FOBs. Damn...come to think of it, I hate all FOBS!!!!
ABC Pryde represented by FOB shit ruiner, FOBs got nuthin so suck my creamy filling

they tend to have curlier/wavier hair. that's why a lot of korean girls get straight perms.
it's all starting to make sense now...koreans and blacks both have curly black hair. and koreans and blacks both like spicy foods. um...koreans and blacks both rap. koreans and blacks were both parties to the l.a. riot. many similarities!
