Have you tried caffeine pills, lots of soda, loud music, or cold turkey?

For those nocturnal folks out there who study in the middle of the night, how do you do it?
*Not that I'm condoning such a habit*

Caffiene doesn't work for me. I have never tried pills in that regard. I'm not a soda person, although I would consume juice and milk often. If I was awake up late I would have likely been at school, so loud music really wouldn't have been an option.

Being a night person is/was fairly common for people in my major. It's easier to concentrate and get work done without as many distractions. Also, many of my friends were (and still are) nocturnal. If you don't have a set work schedule during the day, why not sleep then. You can also try alternative schedules. The productivity gains negate any potential downfall.

Also, it didn't hurt that my old school had libraries open 24 hours on weekdays and several computer labs for CS majors open 24/7 if you knew the lock combinations.

Caffeine, trance music, plenty of study partners to fart around with, the thought of failing tomorrow's test if I don't get my shit done...

On nights when I absolutely have to stay up late, I strip all the bedsheets off the bed and throw them in the laundry. then I put every possible hard and/or breakable object i can find on the bed to make it impossible to lie down. This way, if I'm tempted to "lie down just for 5 minutes," I'll have to put more than 5 minutes of effort into clearing off the bed. and I'll usually figure out what I'm doing, stop about halfway through, and sit back down at my desk.

I don't usually play loud music, unless i'm taking a break to jog around the block. oh yeah, drink plenty of fluids.

i'm soooooooooo addicted to tic tacs

then i'll call up my friend at a different time zone and scream and and rant non stop till i break down and cry. then i'll go wash my face and then continue studying

i sound like a nut. but hey, i was trying to memorize the whole code for a damn program. now that sounds stupid

wash my face with cold water every so often, drink green tea. pop a disney movie in, or music that i can sing to.. i can pull all-nighters fairly easily. chat online with people. it'll keep you up.

then again, if i'm tired enough i can fall asleep. on the desk, in the car, even in the movie theatre.

Earth-shattering SEX!!! YES! (just kidding)

Actually i've tried a combination of stuff. Like drinking jolt colas, listening to loud music, and splashing water upon my face.

If that doesn't work, you get a friend to share your misery, and whoever begins to have heavy eyelids get's a sock in the arm. Hurts, but VERY effective. So the guy who's most awake usually has a blast.

Or you could study whenever you can, so you won't have late nights wasted away in books and notes.

Or not study at all. And hope that you can pass whatever test comes on by. (Like I do.) ;)

Ahh yeah, the misery of staying up late and studying for some midterm/test or jsut putting off your homework til you're done watching letterman/conan o'brian........

I usually depend on the misery of other people to keep me, like chatting online with people who are also up studying or calling people in the middle of the night and waking them up to subject them to the same sentence of a night without sleep that I subject myself to......

Granted that punch in the arm strategy sounds like something I have to try on Fireblade sometime....hmmmm....hold that thought

*gets up, bikes to Fireblade's house, socks him in the arm, and goes back home*

Alright!! I'm set to go for the next couple of hours!!

wahts up ppl?

whew... procrastinating... something i'm good at. just finished a cumulative 3 hours of studying? maybe 2, after a whole night...

but when I'm really on, I prefer power naps and tea. when I take my naps... large glasses of water ensure that i eventually wake up and get out of bed, always with good results.
but enough of this... I have class in an hour, a midterm, and class all day.

Coffee, and showers work pretty well for me up to a certain point. After awhile even if I'm awake, my brain stops working so it's a waste of time just staying up.

caffeine, cold temperature... can't really play loud music cause i don't want to wake anyone up.

what i've found works the best for me is red bull + sobe power. you drink half the sobe power, pour the red bull into the sobe, shake it up, and pound it. gives me a nice little buzz, though i'm beginning to suspect that it's all in my head.

^-- Caffiene buzzes and stuff like that totally keep me awake, but I can't concentrate normally when I'm on them. I've used No Doze before... thought my heart was gonna explode. Xenadrine diet pills work, too.

Showers and music. Preferably nothing too sleepy. I still can't listen to some of the CDs I have because I associate them with long nights of studying.

I've used No Doz before... actually a couple nights ago. One pill...and boy oh boy!!! I was up all night practically... and I had an interview with a reporter the next day. I felt like my heart was beating a lot too.... so I don't think I'll take another pill for a long long time. I was reading a mile a minute, on YW during my breaks clicking madly... ahahah.... it's insane. Oh, my throat muscles felt really constricted too throughout the day. So LOTS of water helps when you're on No Doz.... (now i sound like a druggie)

I guess what I do when I'm up late is doing jumping jacks and running around the house. I don't think I could step into a cold shower... brrrrr

I've used tons of Jolt and Mountain Dew. Red bull works really well too. If I find myself really, really hurtin, I'll take a quick jog, or do some pushups, once the blood is flowing, it's tough to feel tired.

I've tried caffeine, pills, music, everything.

You know what works for me? Deadline pressure. Stress.

If I have to stay up to study, I stay up no problem. Pull an all nighter for an exam the next morning? No problem.

I'll crash about noon the next day, but I'll be fine if the exam is in the morning.

Otherwise I'm generally nocturnal, but not so much anymore.

I have mad high tolerance for caffeine.. I attribute to my love for coffee but mainly the recent increase in tolerance was due to the super strong brew at my work during the summer... I"d have 2, 3 big mugs of those.. They made fun of me saying they needed to take extra liability insurance for employees developing hypertension.

Caffeine and more caffeine. Pots of it. Also, since my attention span is almost two seconds, it helps for me to have a television on or a movie on so that every once in a while I can glance toward it because I am unable to stare and concentrate on any particular thing for more than a few moments without thinking about something else.

Playing with Alf indeed just makes you tired, um...so I've heard. ;)

I don't really think you need caffeine to do it, in fact I think it makes things worse. Too much caffeine will make you nutty, and once you start drinking it you need to keep drinking to maintain the high. I find the best thing to do is to eat regularly and get a lot of fruits and vegetables, 'cause too much heavy greasy food will also make you feel tired. I've stayed up for four days straight doing it that way (not something I reccomend doing, but...).

those chinese "dieter's" tea (i think that's the name of the type. it's the only name i know of that my roomates parents called it). it's those beyond caffeinated tea leaves. yumyumyum. sit down, drink shots of that stuff and i'm good to go.

self administered bitchslaps work pretty well too.

Haha. I stay up late for a long time. Umm... but I end up not studying, or half-studying. As long as someone is IMing me on AIM and engaging conversation, I'm awake and chatting. Or I spend some time on YW because, well, it's like chatting. Haha. Multi-tasking.

Caffeine actually makes me sleepy. So when I drink coffee or whatever, I am more likely to goto sleep than not.

Except Starbucks, because all it really is, is sugar. And sugar has weird effects on me. Orange juice, too. I'd get really hyper.

I used to snack to keep myself awake, but that's not good for you. Not at all.

Actually when studying all-nighter, I find the BEST way to read the material only once and then still remember it for tomorrow's exam is this...

Sleep WELL the the night before the all-nighter.

Then during the all-nighter, read 1 chapter or 1 hour's worth of material. Then nap for 10-15 minutes regardless of how tired you are or not. Yes do it!

Get up, and repeat. I usually don't use caffeine except No Doz pills when I'm absolutely screwed (like 6 hrs left to study).

I'm not sure if there is some scientific basis for this...but it works for me. Maybe it has something to do with REM sleep helping you store the memories but whatever....

I can't concentrate with caffeine either. I guess just drinking a lot of liquids helps...my usual beverage is lots of Kool-aid. Sugar helps... At least if you accidentally fall asleep, then you will have to wake up from intermittent pee breaks.

Unless you're a bed-wetter... :P

It's for people with Attetion Deficit Disorder. Ritalin gives you a lot of focus, and even if you haven't slept in 2 days, this thing makes you focus on whatever you're doing
