Engineers, in Japan are supposedly, pushing for "Sky City", in case you don't know. The simplest way to put it is to move Tokyo Vertical. Sky City would be a skyscrapper about 3,300 ft. more the twice the size of the some of the world's tallest sky scrapper. "Sky City", is to contain, home, commerce and entertainment. It will be made up of SEPERATE plateaus, that will contain gaps, for plant life, and open air. It was on Discovery Channel's Extreme engineering here it is what they have, on it, to be read, the show contain a lot of info on it . . .
"Tokyo's Sky City
It would house 35,000 residents and host 100,000 daily workers, students and visitors. This space-age city in the sky might seem like science fiction, but it answers some questions about where humans might live as our most crowded cities become even more densely populated."

and here is a a link to the VR tour of sky city

would you live there?

it'll be interesting to see. Size is quite relative so I wouldn't say it's impossible. I'd say it's gonna be hella expensive and transportation will be a serious issue.

this a concern to me. We already know how densely packed Tokyo is, and with a Sky City, there might be more room for chaos, or dense populations. If an entire structure is one city, pretty soon we'll see stuff like Battle Angel Atila (yea, an anime) in which there will be a hierarchy of sorts, in which the poor live down at the bottom, and the richer people live at the top. It just seems a bit weird for me. I think I enjoy tall buildings, but not something that huge.

I don't think the poor will ever be able to afford to live in one of those buildings

Woah, that's pretty cool! Do you think they'll ever make that tower/elevator that goes into space?

that reminds me of a book series called Chung Kuo that had the same situation. ppls housing was based on chinese principles of ppl rising to their station in life. its premise was that china had conquered the world. but don't read it. at the end all it is is a tearing down of all things asian and elevation of all things european.

i saw that show.
The building looks cool but it would take a looong time to materialize.

What happens when there's an earthquake? This is Japan we're talking about, after all.

There are weights that will counter-act the shaking . . .

I'm ambivalent on the prospect of living in a structure like that.

But all it all, it looks pretty neat.

Wow that would be totally awesome!

Too bad if terrorists hit that building with a plane or two...it's gonna go down!

I think the Japanese will probably make it down 100 flights of stairs in 2 hours time though...I mean they don't eat hamburger, oreos, and milkshakes like overweight Americans do...so they'll PROBABLy all make it out on time...lol...

Too bad if that thing falls, everyone underneath will probably die. Final Fantasy 7 Anyone?
