AB, Kasia-

Don't know if you guys have discussed this, but it has been brought up that a forum for LGBTQ issues might be desired. I think it's a great idea. What do you guys think?

why don't we just put these topics in the sex and health forum?

There are a lot more things that don't cover sex and health issues TVB. There a lot of topics dealing with identity and currents events that doen't really fall in one general place. It be nice to have it center around one forum.

Is it that hard to put a new forum for these issues? I'm sure that once it's up people will start to participate.

Yeah and just by putting it as a thread in the sex and health forum won't bring much interest or participation

you could make this new thingy a subsection of sex & health forums

I agree. A sex and health subsection would be really oversimplifying things.

I agree, LGBTQ issues aren't just about sex.

And... yeah... I use LGBTQ 'cuz that's the name of the department on campus...

I think that folks might have to consider how straight/heterosexual folks might fit into this. Is this forum being set up solely for GLBTQ Yellowworld members to converse? Or is like the original thread, where it was about educating & dispelling stereotypes among all members?

Personally, I think straight people (a.k.a. straight allies) have a role in making this forum work, but I'm a bit hesitant to say that they would absolutely feel included if we called it a LGBTQ forum.

Of course, it could just be a LGBTQ-specific, so members who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or questioning can use it as their safe space.

However, how can we make this space friendly enough and safe enough for people who identify as questioning, curious, or closeted?

How about a compromise and create a general forum called "Sexuality" or "Sexual Identity"?

i can't make any guarantees, but in the past here at YW we've tried to keep things civil and we've done everything from simply closing threads to as far as banning members.

I don't mean flaming or disruptive behavior. I was thinking more about how we could make the board inclusive enough for questioning, curious, or closeted individuals to participate. I agree that LGBT folks need support and conversation on matters relevant to their own lives, but also how do we make the community open to those who typically do not access these forums?

That's why the name of the forum is important, because it may encourage or deter people from viewing it. Then again, if we are not concerned with inclusiveness, then folks can opt for whatever name they choose. My whole thing is always about the power of language, so I personally would consider carefully what we want it to be like.

God, I need to move to the West Coast...

our campus calls it lgbt, no q, and l before g. maybe it's to keep the wemen's from protesting that guys always come first or something.

but seriously, we have 2-3 resident homosexuals. i think this would be a good idea if we have more in the community, but currently, no.

But you don't have to be gay to talk about lgbtq issues. Just like you don't have to be hapa to hang out in the hapa forum or a man to post in the Men's forum.

that isn't what i'm saying. what i'm trying to say is i don't see a major need for it, but then again, we have a few forums i'd probably delete if i were the top admin.

it wouldn't hurt to have more selections, it's not like creating a new section will cost an arm and a leg. We might even get more people to join and participate if we do have one created.

I see what you're saying... I just think with more forums for specific things, you'll sort of make it easier to talk about certain issues, and LGBTQ is an identity as well as a sexual orientation so it doesn't really fit into any of our current categories.

to me that'd be sex and relationships forum

now if we had more gay members, and this turned into something that dominated the sex and relattionship forum, then yes, a seperate forum is warranted to spread the traffic. but it's not, so i think it shouldn't be made.

again, like i've said before, the reason why there probably isn't that many gay members here could be attributed to the fact that we don't have a LGBTQ forum. this forum could serve the exact purpose of attracting gay members.

so do we put this to a vote or fill out an application or something? It sounds like there's enough interest to have this happen...

it's being discussed in the moderator's forum. but input from all YW members will definitely be taken into account.
