Sorry to hear that. I guess all of those corporate people have no heart when it comes to laying off. One of my friends dropped out from Andersen Consulting to work for a start up in SF, bought a brand new Jetta, and got laid off a month later. Now he's taking acting classes in LA. Another friend was working for Motorola, bought a brand new X-Terra, got his gf pregnant, and soon he got laid off.

When will this nightmare end???

the moral of the story is, don't spend your money on new cars - they only depreciate in value. and use a rubber, unless you are ready to raise a child.

Good luck Chris. Hopefully you got "laid off" and not "fired" so at least you can get some unemployment to help with the bills.

GB, you do know that SWK was out of work for 11 months straight. If I wanted to be brutally honest I could take more shots at the small comments you made about your friends.

Have you thought about looking for a job in Asia? If you have an American degree you'll probably find a job pretty quick, or you could also teach english.
That's what I'm planning to do for a change while the Global economy catches up. Hopefully with the end of the war things will get better.

well actually the economy in asia is not doing so well either. only a few countries are actually in the positive. plus, unless you have a higher degree, there's really no reason for them to hire you because they can hire locals with the same qualification for less pay. but you might be able to get a job with a multinational or american firm that has offices in asia, that's where english skills come in, because you'd have to communicate with english speakers.

oh man i hate working at big huge project like i'm doing right now. and it's a government project too. there's so much bureacracy and they're more concerned with how to milk more money out of the government than producing a good product. oh well, it's a pay check for now.

It's nice though, with that experience you can aim at higher things. As for me, I have a pretty big uncertainty about where my life is heading right now. It's pretty scary

well, seeing that my goal is to start a business in mainland china (that or get a law degree, if good law schools actually accept me), the only use i see in acquiring these new skills is that i have better credentials when it's time to beg for funding, because i'm too dirt poor to afford starting a business by myself. but i see your point, what i can put on my CV now that i'm at this job will definitely help me get a better job. at the same time though, getting a better job still means that i'm in the rat race and i'm still making somebody else rich instead of making myself rich.

if u wanna work in asia and don't mind teaching kids, taiwan has a shortage of english teachers. the new education minister passed some proposal to teach all the kids there english or something and now they're going crazy looking for anybudy who can teach english to the kiddies.... supposedly, u get paid well and don't need credentials...
