i tend to pinpoint one or more characteristics that i admire in a person and try to keep them in mind when practicing that particular trait. for example, i admire my best friend for being his patience, so when im having trouble keeping my cool i think about him and so on and so forth.

Ok I don't have a female role model, but i've been reading tonight and i thought this would be a nice passage to post:
first a side-note...
Claire Lee Chennault was the leader of the American mercenary pilots, "Flying Tigers", in China. He became Brigadier General when the US formally entered WW2.
"Chennault won the support and affection of Chiang Kai-shek and his wife Soong Meiling. He was bowled over by Madame Chiang's youthful looks and command of English, which she spoke with a 'southern drawl'. He later wrote in his diary, 'She will always be a princess to me.' Chennault revered both of them as inspirations for their country and as great leaders. This view was shared by many former China missionaries, and other Americans, who saw Chiang Kai-shek as a symbol of the 'free world' that the allies were fighting to restore. Some reporters, however, were not captivated by Madame Chiang. The English writers W.H. Auden and Christopher Isherwood perceived her formidable qualities when they met her in 1938:
[i:91d0686a48]She is a small, round-faced lady, exquisitely dressed, vivacious rather than pretty, and possessed of an almost terrifying charm and poise. Obviously she knows just how to deal with any conceivable type of visitor... She could be terrible, she could be gracious, she could be businesslike, she could be ruthless; it is said that she sometimes signs death-warrants with her own hand... Strangely enough, I have never heard anybody comment on her perfume. It is the most delicious either of us has ever smelt...[/i:91d0686a48]"
- passage from [i:91d0686a48]The Chinese Century[/i:91d0686a48] by Jonathan D. Spence and Annping Chin.
For those of you who don't know, Soong Meiling had two sisters who were also very influential and powerful figures that were involved in this very tumultuous period of time in China's history. The story of these three sisters is very famous and there is even a movie made about them called The Soong Sisters (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0120164), starring none other than Maggie Cheung, Vivian Wu, and Michelle Yeoh as the sisters. But for a more accurate account of their story, you should probably pick up a book. I have one called [i:91d0686a48]The Soong Dynasty[/i:91d0686a48] by Sterling Seagrave that I have not read yet.

I admire:
my mom[/b:a08d3ec7f4] for being strong-minded... for being able to keep her cool despite of all the troubles involving our family... for being a SUPERWOMAN that she is in her little ways.
[b:a08d3ec7f4]my sister[/b:a08d3ec7f4] because she is just so great!
[b:a08d3ec7f4]lea salonga[/b:a08d3ec7f4] because she has brought enjoyment to people world-wide through her talent in both singing and acting. She has brought pride not only to the Filipinos, but Asians as a whole through her performances, one of which is the "Miss Saigon." In spite of who she is and what she's become, she remains humble, and I truly admire that.

do any of you have any "real" female role models? not just cartoon characters? cause it would be pretty sad if the only females you admire are fantasy characters.

"On February 18, 1943, Soong Mei-ling, the wife of Chinese Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek, appealed to the U.S. Congress to provide aid for the Nationalists in their struggle against Japan and the Chinese Communists. Mei-ling, who in her youth was educated in the United States, was the first Chinese and the second woman ever to address a joint session of Congress. Although China had endured a decade of civil war before the Japanese invasion in 1937, Chiang Kai-shek and his wife became the international symbols of China during World War II. Mei-ling, who spoke perfect English, wrote many articles on China for U.S. journals, and her 1943 visit to the United States secured greater U.S. aid for her husband's government. Mei-ling herself so impressed the American public that throughout the 1950s and most of the 1960s her name appeared annually on the U.S. list of the ten most-admired women in the world. With the triumph of Mao Zedong's Communist forces in 1949, she fled with her husband to the island of Formosa, which later became the independent Chinese republic of Taiwan. With the death of President Chiang Kai-shek in 1975, Mei-ling retired to the United States."
why don't we ever learn about people like her in school?

and it is interesting to note that her sister Soong Ching Ling, who married Sun Yat Sen, was a leftist and later a communist. Mao Zedong eventually even made her a vice chairman of the PRC. so Soong Mei Ling and Soong Ching Ling had actually been on the opposite sides of the fighting and ideology.
Also another influential woman during China's revolutionary times is the woman author Ding Ling. She was a communist but her writing on women's rights were too progressive even for the communist party at the time, which was in itself already viewed as very progressive back then, and she ended up getting into trouble time and again for it. Her female characters were very 3-dimensional and complete, with faults as well as strengths.

yeah i have heard people criticize that movie as not very accurate and soft on the communists because it was released in 1997 and people were self-censoring themselves. right before 97, certain people were really afraid that they were blacklisted and that when the communists take over HK, they would be locked up. martin lee himself had talked about being afraid of this.
but anyway, it's a quick and entertaining way to get a brief summarized history on the soong sisters.
