Most people seem to have agreed on Friday. What would you all like to do?

1. Movie: Better Luck Tomorrow
2. Clubbing/Bars
3. Lunch
4. Dinner
5. Other

Post up what you prefer to do and whether you are coming so we can get back to you individually with a place, time, and a contact number.

Is anybody bringing the video camera for the YellowWorld kick boxing tournament ?

I'll be clubbing one way or another
A friend of mine is the opening DJ on the main floor at Exit, so I'd like to be there at around 11
The feature DJ (Ferry Corsten) is one of my favorites, so I wanna be rested to last til 6 am (or later)

It would be nice to meet and greet everyone beforehand. If BLT can be seen on another day, then dinner sounds good.

Gotta work, so lunch isn't good

I definitely don't want people to feel "grateful" for time spent on the site. It would be nice, however, if members who've endured some technical problems wouldn't confront me as their enemy or something. :D

So dinner on Friday good for everyone? And those who want to go clubbing afterwards can split up. Exit sounds awesome. Those who don't can chill at a lounge or something - Evelyn Lounge is great for that.

For Exit, to get on the guestlist ($25 admission, as opposed to $30-35 regular), either:
1. email names to: list@unitedunderground.com
2. if you're registered on ClubPlanet, sign up at http://www.clubplanet.com/guestlists

I hope it works.
I might also be able to take a few in with me.

btw, some other clubbing options for that night:
1. Centro-Fly, with Hernan Cattaneo, South America's #1 DJ
2. Arc, with Danny Tenaglia spinning midnight - 10 am
3. a bunch of Asian parties - info at http://www.clubzen.com

If anyone wants details on those, let me know.
I'm set on Exit for myself though.

I'll probably hit Exit. Is there a cover for girls? Been wanting to go for a while. Too bad Sound Factory closed down. I have some friends bartending at Centro-fly so that could be a good alternative. They say it's really fun.

Other good choices:

1. Filter 14 - Hip-hop night on Fridays, House on Saturdays
2. 420 - good cross between bar and club (bar upstairs/club downstairs)
3. Opal and Turtle Bay - both on East side, good dancing and music.

Their Friday event got moved to Exit
btw, SF is doing after-prom parties on Fridays starting in May

You probably need really special connections to get comped for Exit

Cabana is a latin-infused cuisine type place. Chill ambience and great music. Fabulous mojitos!

I will be coming back into the city this coming weekend (May 8th - 12th) for a press conference. I am commanding Meena to get her skinny ass out of her apartment and meet me for lunch.

All other YWers welcomed. Jose, LW, CSB, etc. Can't wait to meet new members also.

Meena, as an incentive, I'm telling you now that I chopped my hair off. 12 inches baby!

Random: Anyone else thinking of doing that, please donate to the campaign "Locks of Love (http://www.locksoflove.com/)," which makes wigs for children with cancer out of the donated hair.

May 8 is a possibility, but I'll be out of town on the other days
Anyone wanna do a happy-hour/afterwork thing, as at least part of the program?
Here's an option with a mostly Asian crowd, if people so prefer - http://www.taogroove.net/tg/html/doc.htm

Oh wait, that's at the same time as the YW chat. But opportunities to chat are every week, whereas opportunities to meet and greet in the flesh are not as plentiful.

Or if there's enough interest in doing it later, and if I finish with packing early enough, Filter 14, Centro-Fly, and Discotheque have good stuff going on

Where is Avalon located? Didn't ever hit up Limelight. Was thinking Suede or Noca, but I'd like a place with no cover or else we got to go early enough not to be charged an arm and leg.

Any bar/club is cool with me. Prefer that over a full club. Is Avalon a full club?

Somewhere around the village (east or west ok), Chelsea, or E. 45th is cool.

Thass what I say, Lama!

We should stick with the basics!

I mean, if you like creative, I was gonna suggest kite-flying at the Cloisters since it's gettin' windy...but hard to fly kites and drink screwdrivers at the same time...

I would be very down with just a drinkie/eatie if there were to be some table talking going on...

It's hard to carry convos in clubs...and spending your money when the music might suck never feels kosher...now a drink in my hand, THAT I can control!

For kicks, we could have a hurricane party.

We all get in our swimsuits and pile up in a van or something and go out to Long Island.

We all go out onto the beach and frolic amongst 100mph winds and a surf that can crush tomato cans. Last person who doesn't get blown up into the stratosphere or pulled under a barrier reef to get lost forever like Amelia Earhart "wins."

Just a thought. Would be interesting to see if we could find each other there. Anyways, sound appealing to anyone?

For those over 21 who can, come to Guernica the night before (wed, Oct 15) for a proper warm-up to the meetup. Or perhaps it could be a meetup before the meetup. Or something like that.

Too bad, Tao. If we all DO get together, we'll pour some Zinfandel on the ground for ya!

:D

So, 8:00 seems like a good time to start!

Now, cuisine and venue of choice?

I eat Asian food, like, 90% of the time, so if any of you guys wanna go that route, I'm not one of those non-Asian people who'll be asking you, "what's THAT?" I'm also open to anything else; I'm not picky at all and I love bopping in new places!

As for the place, I know of lots of joints, but I can suggest these if we're a party of six or better and don't have the kind of loot to hit up the Nobu-leagues:

FILIPINO/THAI/MALAYSIAN-CHINESE & VEGETARIAN
Dragonfly
47-49 7th Ave S
New York,*NY*10014
Phone: (212) 255-2848

JAPANESE (TAPAS)
Typhoon Lounge
79 Saint Marks Place
New York,*NY*10003-7955
Phone: (212) 979-2680

JAPANESE (STEAK/SHABU-SHABU/SUSHI)
Lan*
56 Third Ave
New York,*NY*10003
Phone: (212) 254-1959
Fax: (212) 477-5561

KOREAN
Hanbat Restaurant*
53 W. 35th St.
New York,*NY*10001-2219
Phone: (212) 629-5588

Most of the East Coast heads might know of these joints, maybe you like 'em or don't like 'em, but for me, they're good on hitting the cost, space and casual atmosphere trifecta. (my friends also work there, so I'm shamelessly giving them business) If anyone wants to do something more premium, I can swing that way too.

Japanese... Tapas? Is that like Spanish Tapas but with... Japanese ingredients? I'd be down for that.

Irezumi Kiss
10-11-2003, 04:52 PM
I think it's just Japanese dishes done tapas style, also certain fusion dishes you won't find in a "typical" Japanese place. They change up the menu from time to time, too.

They even have these cute little shabu-shabu clay firepots that can be shared by two people. If we end up going there, I'm definitely doing that!

I'm always kinda hazy on trying to describe "tapas" to someone — since it's traditionally made for Spanish food. I think in the case of Typhoon, it's just the serving style. I dunno. Most of the time I don't eat there, but just drink. Every once in a while, I'll get a dish to eat. When I'm there with three or more friends, it's more fun to order full courses. It's also verrry easy on the change purse.

Cool joint, but not the only apple in the basket! I'm open to any other suggestions!

I'm in — I'm always being a nightcrawler on Thursdays anyway — but since it looks like there's only going to be no more than four of us, maybe five at best, I would suggest that Dragonfly would be a better choice since they have couches in the downstairs bar area and has a more intimate feel for a small group.

However, Iris, since you seem to be the details lady, I'll graciously defer to your choice!

either place you pick, I probably will join you guys around 8:30ish, I'll be jetting my office pretty close to 8:00.

I'd rather not go to Dragonfly. I love it but I live nowhere near it and I'll be heading down there this morning. I don't want to go downtown twice.

I'm kinda feeling Carribean or Latin tonight. How does Ola sound?

OLA

I fear it might be kinda of pricey so let me know if y'all want to go somewhere else.

Another choice is to meet up for dessert at 9:00pm at:

Depends on where you go and what you order, I guess...

When I'm doing Asian with a group of friends, if they're Asian, we usually end up doing the share thing and it all breaks even Steven.

Every other cuisine is done more or less individual. If the joint is close to suit & tie but not tuxedo style, I can safely factor in $20 for entree & appetizer and another $20 for drinx. Those kind of places you have your one-and-a-half hour dinners and then you move on. Other joints are set up to keep you there and maybe if you're feeling the night you stay and get your drink on. It's all good, you just gotta know what you want. Forty simoleons is not true "pricey" but I can take that salad and stretch it over three joints instead of one when I wanna bop around a bit for liquid refreshment instead of staying put.

Hmmmm 40 bucks is hard if you wanna hit a kickin spot in NYC. Hit a good bar with a nice crowd and you're lookin at 8-10 bucks for a drink. But that's really only asian bars. I think typical caucasian bar would be like 4-6 bucks for a drink.

It's all good, it depends on the circumstances...where do you hang mostly, what do you eat and how much do you eat, what do you drink and how much do you drink and how long do you stay at any given place?

I work late, so I generally miss the happy hour thing. Also I will eat a good lunch that carries me thru the day and most of the early nite, so when I step out of the office and go get my chill on, there's no need to eat and I mostly drink until around 3 in the morning when I get the munchies again. And there's plenty of all-nite spots to hit for quality grub.

Most of my spots are where my friends work and sometimes I get the frequent flier discounts. Plus, I know the drinks to get that don't tap your barrel and still gives you a nice floating sensation. I am in no hurry to spend money when I have the whole night to sit back and relax.

Well, I drink a good amount of liquor. When I go out, I mostly go out to the bars, lounges, clubs. Very rarely restaurant. I guess some examples would be Eugene's, Mad 28, C-fly, Metronome, Punch, Zen X, or Blue. Bob's, Pravda, or Carnival if I'm downtown and trying to stay away from that whole asian scene. There's a pretty good bar on Bowery & Spring too, but it's always way too packed. Sometimes I goto cheap caucasian bars like Art Bar, Sake Bar.com, or Climate 8. Those last 3 would probably be the cheapest for happy hour drinks or a more intimate setting. I usually blow around 100-150 on drinks then grab some ghetto food like Castle or BK's or Wung Jo. And those spots I hit, aren't even considered the "up-scale" expensive spots. All depends how much liquor you can hold I guess. But at let's say average 8 bucks for drinks, and with friends buying rounds of shots, buy 2 rounds for 5 people and thats already 80 bucks.

Good vibe there.

I guess as I get older I become more comfortable with having a "slow hand".

When I was younger (I'm 33 now), I went out like crazy, spent mad green and got drunk just to do it and I didn't really notice the things I notice now. Like cost/quality of drink ratio. Case in point, recently there was a Flip party at Dragonfly and when I rolled in there, the whole joint was deep with bodies and they were all CRUNK off their asses. I got to the bar after wading thru a sea of borderline jaibait belly flesh and there were people (mostly dudes) doing shot after shot of Hypnotiq or whatever mixed drink is hot to do shots with...and I swear to Gizzod multiple $20 bills were flying every five minutes to pay for these drinks. More than what I would care to think about spending was thrown down within half and hour. And even though everyone was feeling no pain, I'm saying to myself, "Are you even enjoying what you're drinking? Do you even care?" I think most of the guys just wanted to impress the girls (who were fine as fuck, I'll admit) and the girls were getting their free drinks outta it, too...but...

Not hatin' or anything, but it got me thinking about when I used to get wild and how easy it would have been for my ass to get rolled for it, too...

My style these days are East Village dive bars, wine bars like Veloce and Japanese izakayas like Decibel or Sakagura. I stick to mainly sake drinks, wine, maybe the occasional whiskey shot, or boilermaker, or some thick-ass Jamaican rum. Mmmm, yummy. I like hopping unless I'm getting my groove on with someone and generally try to hit up 3 to 5 joints if my pockets are deep enough.

I also like going out four or five times a week on impulses, so it's better for me to know how to spread things out...I'm totally nightcrawler...

It's all good. I like a lot of the places you mentioned, too. I'm either by myself or hanging with friends and there's a different way to roll in both situations..

Wonjo is SO much better than Castle's! Doesn't that shit fuck your stomach up?

It's all good. It would be a boring world if there was only one thing to do.

But where in NY is your scene?

i like the VIP lounge, paradise club and private eyes.

if not there, i like to hit up the dive bars. drunken irish people are more fun to drink with.

why hello there :new_all_c

irish pubs rock.

:new_all_c

it all boils down to a dive bar, irish pub or a titty bar for me. all i need nowadays are my drinking buddies, alcohol and/or titties. the rest such as ambiance, atmosphere blah blah are inconsequential.

It's only been a few days so far, but we'll see. Been thinking about it since the temp dropped the first time a month ago. I finally took my ass to Bed Bath & Beyond last Friday to get it because after it went below 30 and the snow started coming in, I told myself that was the last night I'd be shivering underneath two blankets while wearing sweats. The heater in my room is as warm as a witch's you-know-what and it wasn't cutting it despite my landlord fixing it.

69 bucks and you know what? It's almost TOO good. I didn't notice how well it was until an hour after I had it on while playing games on my computer and then I was like, "shit, I'm fuckin' hot!"

The thing is that it circulates the air in the entire room and keeps it at a constant, moving heat. Those stand-alone oil heaters you might be used to are NOTHING on this. I had it on max high when I got it because I needed to break it in and I wasn't used to the settings (it's a fan, so initially the air it blows is cool so it kinda fools you at first). Now I have it on a low setting of 4 and it's like this — I was in a tank top and shorts. Sub-fuckin'-blime.

Best of all, it's portable, non-metallic and LIGHT as a muthafucker. If you really wanted to go totally anal the next time you drop by your friends' cold-ass crib, bring it along and watch them try to pry it from your paws.

Maybe too much of a good thing. Because of the snow and because of the heater, I stayed in all weekend and didn't go out at all, not for chores, shopping, movies or bar hoppin', only except to get groceries and that's one block down the street.

I was supposed to go hunting for rice cookers and digital cameras, but by gum, that heater done turned me sloth!

Since I work nights and keep it on low when I am home, it shouldn't be sucking up too much juice to be a burden.

dude that sounds like it is a good buy. my apt's heat is actually TOO hot. i live in an old building with the boiler room heat and i guess it works well. i even have to open the window a crack. even with all the recent snow we just had. i will keep the vornado in mind if i move to a cold-ass apt in the future tho. thanks for the report.
