i ask because i am playing Baldurs Gate 2 and i was wondering what the difference between a weapons damage is, for example:
whats the difference between say 1D10 and 2D6? and whatabout 2D6 +1?
The game is simulating dice throws. The first number is how many times the die is rolled, and the Dx part is how many sides are on the die. So a 1D10 is a 10-sided die thrown once, which gives you a number from 1 to 10. A 2D6 is a 6-sided die thrown twice, which gives you a number from 2 to 12 (but you'll realize that the chance of getting 6 is more than the chance of getting 12). If you're really bored you could calculate the probabilities and it's probably out there on the net somewhere.
The +1... can't really remember but it's a type of magic enhancement. Not sure how it factors into damage but I think some enemies can't be hurt at all without a minimum enhancement like that.
The good thing about the game is that it takes care of all that crap for you. I donno how anyone could play this with real dice.

<can i have a mountain dew?>

Editions are like... what? Rules changes, right? I'm not a hard core player but I played a bit years ago and my husband is a hard core player to this day. He's currently in a campaign. Though I've only dabbled in playing table top (as I've said before I was a young, single, size 4 Japanese Eurasian female, if I stood in a room full of geeks it was like a rabbit in a room full of hungry wolves -- whose favorite snack was rabbit) and haven't played since that couple of time but I read a lot of the Forgotten Realms pulp fiction and play the hell out of the computer RPGs. I even have the PS2 version of Baldur's Gate.
I wish I could play more table top. It's much more entertaining than television, second only to reading. But I have a hard time dealing with the average player. Especially since, IMHO, they have a high crossover with otaku dorkism and Asiaphilia.
Anyhow, I'm a min/maxer when I play the computer games so I know quite a bit about the rules. I think. But ism already answered your question.

if u play icewind dale 2, u'll see the differences better. the way things are calculated and shown make the 3rd edition easier to understand. the higher the number, the better is the rule. armor class and saving throws are an example. instead of lower is better, it is now "higher is better" and an enemy hit or spell must be higher than the target's AC or saving throw to hit. there's a lot more stuff, but since i've never played pnp, i don't know it.
-edit: also, character creation and leveling is much more flexible. basically any race can become any class and can switch into another class whenever they hit their next level. no need for kits anymore.

Yeah the Aurora engine created by Bioware captures the 3E (nerdspeak for third edition) captures the rules really well. The numbers are cumulative for saving throws, armor and to-hits rather than before. I don't remember 2nd edition stuff so well but I remember enough to know that you sometimes had to roll higher or lower and I think 3E is all higher. I haven't played 3E pen and paper either but from what I read of the rulesbook combat is kind of a bitch. You have all these rules about moving and attacks of opportunity and whatnot. I'm really impressed with how Bioware handled it because it's seamless when playing NWN. I've actually thought about learning how to script. I have written extremely simple programs before. Most of the scripting looks like functions anyhow, that I think I can handle especially since you can paint down the areas. Maybe it's time to 'level-up' in my geekiness.

With even better bouncing boob technology no doubt. I liked BG:DA, it wasn't bad and it was really fun to unlock Drizz't after running the Gauntlet. My main complaint is lack of character creation and emphasis on boob tech that could have been energy spent on other areas. Oh well, that's game designers for ya.
The end was really disappointing I thought.

or you can make it work for you. one of my college ex's brother was a hardcore player. he had his friends over one night and one of them said: "i wish i had an asian girlfriend. they're so hot." so i said to him: "i can ask my ex to bring some her gf's over if you spring for eats for the house." so he ordered and two of her girlfriends came over under the guise of free food.

1st edition (simply named Dungeons & Dragons) was way way back. it was very simple. 2nd edition (named Advanced Dungeons & Dragons - AD&D) was basically a whole bunch of additions to 1st edition. for 3rd edition (once again officially called Dungeons & Dragons), they did a re-haul of their system. it basically is more systematic and flexible for what 2nd edition has wanted to do for years. it also makes things easier to understand.
i really recommend Neverwinter Nights. it won a lot of awards.
and i can't wait for Shadows of Undertide (http://nwn.bioware.com/shadows/) to come out!!! they've planned for 5 prestige classes and have already implemented 2. they don't have the prestige class i really want though - Spellsword. although they do have Arcane Archer. i might just have to settle for that.

Dwarven cleric for me. Domains of Death and Magic so I can cast arcane spells in heavy armor AND have a shadow familiar. All without the arcane magic penalties.
Yeah, I need to have my husband set up his system and we'd have to coordinate a time and decide on a module, but I'm totally up for it. We can ramp up on the Training Halls module if we have to and decide if we're going to do co-op or PK. Also, which weapons or goodies we're allowed. Otherwise we'll all have superweapons and have like stats of 25.

1D10 means a 10 faced dice rolled one time. Possible outcomes are 1-10 obviously.
2D6 means rolling a 6 faced dice twice. Possible outcomes are 2-12.
The last one just means you add +1 to the outcome which means the possible outcomes are 3-13.

Okay, I wanna do a direct connect. I don't want to go through battlenet, which means that one of us will need a static IP address. I vote we just use one of the modules that doesn't need to be run by anyone. Have any of you guys done Witch's Wake? If not that might be a decent one. Haven't been by Bioware's site lately to see what cool new modules are out. Mr. HH says he wants in too if it's okay with you guys.

haha, the Hulk runs around with a bastard sword. i remember one line from the main character's imp butler from baldur's gate II "why you think it called bastard, has no father?" or something like that. yeah. alright.
Alright, I installed NWN Linux server. My server box is kinda weak, since it was meant only to be a proxying firewall and I'm not sure how many players it can handle. 400mhz PII/128mb RAM and my upload bandwidth is capped at 12Kbps. I'm guessing 4 players at best. If someone has a better box/connect I can help set it up.
Anyway, finding a multiplayer module is pretty tough. There is the official campaign but it sucks donkey balls. I found a bunch on NWN Vault but the highest-rated ones require hakpacks. Out of those I think the following are good candidates:
Under the Moonlight
3-5 hours playtime
good and neutral characters (evil would have to break alignment to finish quests)
2-4 players, levels 18-20, spell casters favored
Eligia Eternum
2-3 hours playtime
any alignment
Any number of players, levels 5-8
If playtime is an issue the game can be saved and resumed at another time. If someone would like to check out modules and try to find a suitable one, http://nwvault.ign.com/Files/modules/modulesTop2.shtml is the major repository.

Need a bit of help with running my server... Gamespy has this stupid bug where you can't see your own server if you're coming off the same IP address so I can't tell if it's listed. Server isn't up all the time so I'll probably be bugging one of you on AIM to look for it.
Got Elegia Eternum loaded. You'll need the hakpack for it and there are some music files. I playtested a bit of it and it seems perfect for a group of level 5-7. 8 seems way too easy.
Download the mod here (http://nwvault.ign.com/Files/modules/data/1037506296655.shtml).

oh yeah, you and i are SO much cooler for sitting around a table and rolling dice. :D maybe it's time for me to dig out that pic of the white girl with all the fake plastic ninja swords strapped to her back.

I heard LARPing was fun, but I have played only 1 table top game and that was blood bowl (football with D&D races). My friend Chris is a hardcore larper, and he was telling me stuff that sound fun, but I always get this image in my hand of a kid with a garbage can lid and a broom stick hitting a plush dragon.

what? what kind of storyteller (or is it GM in vampire?) lets his players become methuselahs? that's way too powerful.
i like playing tremere. but i never played that much. and it was only table-top and we goofed around half the time.
Thanks to Kim deftly navigating Linux (*clap* *clap* *clap*), the server is confirmed as accessible over the internet. First session will be tomorrow, 4/16, at 9 PM EST. All 4 player slots are taken, and this will double as a load test. Hopefully more can be accomodated in the future.
Module to be played: Elegia Eternum (http://nwvault.ign.com/Files/modules/data/1037506296655.shtml) (you need, at a minimum, the .hak file to play)
Levels: 5-8 (if you need to level a character I suggest The Halls of Advanced Training Deluxe (http://nwvault.ign.com/Files/modules/data/1032581153405.shtml))
