do you have a screenname that you only use while you're at work? is it more "professional" than the one you use while you're at leasure? do people at your work instant message eachother even though they're only a few feet away from eachother, for the sake of not having to stand up to give them a message?

we just use email here. no IM. i know other law firms use 'blackberry' or something like that. i use the same screen name.

when I worked for the comp sci department, we used unix "talk" or "write" a lot. it doesn't have screennames, though. I use a different email address for business stuff like applying for jobs than for personal email, though.

yeah talk was very convenient, because most of the time we log in to unix accounts to check our emails anyway. and the geeks at cmu check their email every 15 minutes of their lives. :P

the work i went to didn't like people to use instant messengers.
and when i installed mIRC, i used it for about 2 days when all of a sudden they cut off my net.
it was a pisser, but i can understand why they don't want employees to use them
as for my screen name, i use angelwiththesword for practically everything. and when i can't use that, i use MrSamsa

you might be able to do it if you set the connection port for AIM to 23

i use it at work.. but for work. most people are old enough not to NEED AIM in their life.
not sure if they know i have use it, since i sit here in my own office. But they are pretty lax here, so as long as it doesn't interfer with my work(which it does) i should be ok.
and yeah.. sometimes we use email as if it was an instant messanger
