Dear Abby,
I work at a Chinese-owned financial firm every day after school, from 3:15-7:00PM. I make $10 an hour doing clerical work. I have one complaint; everyone in the office speaks Mandarin instead of English and I don't understand any of it. It makes me feel uncomfortable. What should I do?
Yours truly,
No-understand Chinese

How did she get a job at that place if she doesn't speak Chinese ? She (or he) should be happy to have a job now and stop complaining. If this person is of East Asian descent, they should be ashamed that they don't take advantage of this opportunity to learn the language. I am sure this ungrateful individual can be easily replaced.
A very long time ago, I did work for a lawyer before and everyone in the office was Taiwanese, except me. Everyone spoke English when talking to me. The rest of the time they typically spoke Chinese and most of the clients also spoke Chinese.
I have a friend whose Aunt was working in a major American company in the Southwest. She was white and could only speak English. She lost her job because she couldn't communicate with her co-workers (who could only speak Mexican Spanish).

Chinese probably isn't part of the actual job requirements, sounds like it's probably back-end clerical work which doesn't require much interaction with the public.
anyway this sounds a lot like some ABC highschool brat whose mother landed her a job through connections.

Is it because she's paranoid, and think everyone is talking about her? She's got issues then.

At the button her siggy says... Proud to be JA, so I'm assuming she's Japanese-American, ergo can't speak Mandarin because she isn't Chinese?
Hmm... just enjoy earning the easy money?

yeah i think this would be a great opportunity for this person to learn some chinese. it would be useful for possible business purposes, and it would also be useful if s/he has a chinese significant other.

why does she need to understand any of it? what they're saying to each other in mandarin probably doesn't concern her.

if i were an old chinese woman and there were a ni--- err nice japanese american girl around me, i'd probably say a few things interspersed with her name and "nanking"-- just to piss her off. :D
