i suck at reviews, but me read good.

good book. slow on the intro cause the original translation in Chinese (taiwan print) concentrated on the history and development to the Nanking Massacre. It gave a brief but very accurate portrayal of how China fell in the Manchu dynasty to the "POWERS" and led to the japanese invasion. the japanese really couldn't help themselves cause they saw an opportunity to join the ranks of the imperilist nations. anyways, the book actually focuses on Minnie Vautrin, a missionary who saved hundreds of girls from being raped and tortured by the japanese horde. i almost cried reading into it (yes, laugh), but at the meat of the book, the author does a great job of relaying what Minnie and the others must have gone through. if you're into history, this is a good book. it does have some contraversy cause most japanese still don't believe it happened. a recent book published in japan actually says that the nanking people were "happy to see us". there are websites on this topic too that say the "massacre" never happened. i got interested in this after seeing a related book at barnes and noble. please look it up.

this is not a book to bash teh japanese. its a book that decries the inhumanity of war. the history of war has evolved from killing enemies to enslaving enemies to imprisoning enemies to ... whateever it is now. rape has always been a part of it (still happening in africa). i hope people see the true value of the book whatever their opinion in History class is.
