it varys... a lot... usually like, 30-40ish depending on how many shifts they need me and if it's an am or pm (pm shifts are way longer)... but I'm a full time student, so it sucks.

i work the standard 40 since i'm a government employee. but some days i have to work a lil extra if i'm busy. but no OT since i'm on salary. my hrs are 8am-5pm. i absolutely loathe the 8am part since i'm nocturnal. on occasion, there's a business social function i gotta attend at night, so i technically work til 8:30pm, but get a chichi dinner so i don't really complain. :P

when I was a contractor my hours varied from 40 to 70 a week, just depended on the project and how much cash I needed at the time.

over the past few years in college (full time) I've worked 15-30 hours a week at part-time jobs. excluding while I was in HK, where as a good student following the terms of his visa I never engaged in any English tutoring in exchange for which I received those little pieces of paper we call "money," and certainly not for 10 hours a week.

Right now I'm on the low side of that range cuz I got lazy this term ... 16 units and 15 hours of employment a week ... hehe

My agency's work week hours is 37.5, so that's what I do in a good week, but if things are really busy and hectic, I have been known to put in 70+. February was bad for me...worked about 26 days out of 28. Today I worked 6.5 hours :)

Yes, but so are many other jobs. I'm just happy I'm not a surgeon or air traffic controller!

kasie, you will be experiencing similar stresses after you pass the bar this summer!

So far this month, I've worked 36 hours. Pay days are the 15th and 30th. So, 2 more work days. Can't wait.

Do you think I should work more hours during my spring break?

Job in Hong Kong: 80 hours a week - Strategic Marketing Consultant for a Big 5 Firm
Job now: 50ish hours a week - Publicist in the music industry

Boyfriend at a Big 5 finance firm - 90+ hours a week - Investment Banker, Mergers & Acquisitions

Finance is a hard life. All my male friends work on Wall Street or Midtown in investment banking and they all work around 90+ hours a week. Every first year analyst works on weekends and they all carry pagers with them so they can be reached by their company 24/7. They're given special cards that change numbers every 12 minutes in case they need to get on a computer. They use the numbers to log on from anywhere. Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley even have "sleeping rooms" that open around 10pm so analyst can take naps. Because they work such long hours, analysts never take the subway. The i-bank always provides a car service for them after 8pm because sometimes the analyst will fall asleep on the subway and end up in Brooklyn or Queens.

My parents totally had it harder though. They worked 100+ weeks from waiter/cook/cleaner to get to where they are now.

I hope private law firms do this too, because I end up conking out in this fashion very often. Especially when I get older.

Public interest law treats people fairly well. 8-6 tops each day.

Man, I can't wait to spend my life working.

depending on the firm, you'll get your own bed. bathroom. my friend stayed at his firm for a whole week straight once. i don't think it's healthy.

re: public interest law - most ppl put in more time than that. i think you only put in minimal time if they're willing to turn in shoddy work or give a shoddy performance. but don't forget that the attorneys that they're going up against are often from huge firms. if they actually want to win their cases, they're going to have to put in more than 8-6.

True. I wasn't counting in trial time. Then the sky's the limit as far as how much time you spend preparing. The hours are a lot more regular and bearable than firm law in general. It's a lot closer to the average 9-5 routine than private work though. Especially with government work.

Either that or maybe I've just met really shitty public interest lawyers. Maybe the DoJ's filled with incompetent boobs too.

mm...when they're on the prosecution side, i'd say it's closer to the 9-5. those in the public defender's office - who are actually there because they care about their clients - tend to work longer hours.

Before: 40-60 hrs.
Now: 0 hour

I do enjoy having time off. I just went to Shell Houston Open. I am thinking of going to US Men Clay Court Champion ships down the road. I will be eating hot dogs while watching the Astros on Tuesday.

Life is grand until I run out of money.

the real question is how many hours you actually work

in between surfing the net, running personal errands, buying property on the side i have been running at approximtely 50% utilisation for the last 6 weeks based on a standard 40 hr week.
