Damn, I need to start selling out -- fast. (http://photojpn.org/books/theme/enari.html) I've got a ton of old pics of the family in the US and Japan. Is it book deal time for HH?

Have any of you thought about doing a book? Ever think of selling your story? Why or why not?

Thought about it, but there is no market for it. No one really wants to read about hapas except for hapas. And the market just isn't big enough.

well nobody said you have to sell the book too! :D

maybe if we wrote the book in japanese. i can't say i'd imagine there would be too much of a market for this kind of thing in the US. except among mixed race kids and their parents. in China at the present stage of cultural development, not too much market for that matter either.

I do have hopes to write and illustrate my own comics, and of course I would draw on my own experiences for stories, but I have no plans as yet to do a story that close to home... I don't really like autobiographies, anyway.

the idea of race relations is pretty much non-existent in china. unless you go to western china or something. in which case they'd probably be too poor to buy a book like that anyway.

sometimes I can't tell. chinese people try to think of themselves as one big happy nation-state-family kinda thing, which is easy when all your major minority ethnic groups (e.g. Manchu, Zhuang, Yao) are happily sinicizing. But more and more Uighurs are showing up in other parts of China - I saw some even in Shenzhen. And the relations aren't all that good either --- there was a riot at an engineering college in Sichuan just two years ago, Han students attacking Uighur students over music being played too loud or something like that.
also if you trust the Chinese government's statistics, Xinjiang is the fastest-growing econom in China.

oh i would have expected it to be Xizang (Tibet).
but yeah i wouldn't be surprised if it's true. because they're so damn poor out there that their economy have nowhere else to go but up.
i don't really see any improvements in being more race conscious because china is so overwhelmingly comprised of people who identify themselves as han chinese. and china is not going to allow mass immigration into its territories anytime soon.
perhaps unless a korean war breaks out...
