I had a chance to see "Bringing down the house" this weekend. If you know something about the Black culture you may find the movie very funny. My brother's and some of our friends went. We were the only one's in the movie that got any of the remarks. This was mainly due to the fact that they ran this movie in an predomanitly white area. So alot of the funny stuff just flew over their heards. In short, my family and friends enjoyed ourselves. Has anyone else seen it?

Yeah. It was mildy funny.

A lot of groaning from the audience for the racial jokes.

I saw it last weekend.

I didn't think it was funny at all, especially steve martin  ,

But that guy from american pie series (that pie guy's dad is fucking hillarious)

My favorite quote from him:

You got me straight tripping, boo!

:D

It did have one of the best chick fights ever, though.

Okay, so Latifah helps Martin loosen up, and in that sense fulfills the Black Miracle Worker stereotype. For some reason this is a better alternative than the truer ending of them getting together. The film is predictable in every aspect, and it's clear from the beginning that they are never meant to be together. It's okay for Latifah to end up with the cartoonishly freaky Jew with the fetish, though. In that sense, the movie cops out and is completely devoid of any meaning. But then again, when was the last time a white people-meet-black person movie had any real implications? 1967?

Direction-wise, it was paced well but choppy; inopportune cuts ruin the comedic timing. At some points you wonder how the film arrived at that point from the previous scene. Pathetically amusing to the point of being endearing, and quickly forgettable the moment you step outside the theater. Just pretend the movie doesn't exist and you'll be better off.

some of the lines were very funny, but overall, it's just another movie that plays up black stereotype and in the end having the anal white dude speaking ebonics. certainly nothing new here.

Just rented it. Yawn. Queen Latifah was a wasted talent in this movie.

*** *** ***

So, when does Queen Latifah use her birth name as an actress? Seems kind of funny to see the name on the credits of a serious movie.

Yeah just a stereotype...I didn't even watch it, don't want to previews are enough.

Big dark skin black woman gives white folks some soul and teach them about life.

Goes back to the Big Black Mammie stereotype, all the way from slavery, who teaches white folks how to love their children and how to live with feeling. Actually in this sense it is insulting to black and white people.

If you want to see a better stereotypical movie of the same general that is not a comedy, watch Clara’s Heart with Whoopie Goldberg and that guy who used to be Doogie Howser. :(
