View Full Version : The Art of War

here are some quotes i found particularly insightful from Sun Tzu's The Art of War:
Those who assist a leader by means of the Tao do not use arms to coerce the world, for these things tend to reverse - brambles grow where an army has been, bad years follow a great war.
Weapons are inauspicious instruments, not the tools of the enlightened. When there is no choice but to use them, it is best to be calm and free from greed, and not to celebrate victory. Those who celebrate victory are bloodthirsty, and the bloodthirsty cannot have their way with the world.
Those who are good at knighthood are not militaristic, those who are good at battle do not become angry, those who are good at prevailing over opponents do not get involved.
I have three treasures that I keep and prize: one is kindness, second is frugality, and third is not presuming to take precedence over others. By kindness one can be brave, by frugality one can reach out, and by not presuming to take precedence one can survive effectively. If one gives up kindess and courage, gives up frugality and breadth, and gives up humility for agressiveness, one will die. The exercise of kindness in defense leads to security.
enjoy ^_^

I think the most powerful single notion I took away from reading it the first time is the best victory is one in which you don't even need to go to war.
I also like the chapter on the usage of spies.

Yes but you have to realize that I rely on absurdity and subtle wtf-type-of demeanor on YW :P . And besides, the guy with the little sword beating the guy with the bigger sword is usually more the exception than the rule.

yes especially about supporting assassination as opposed to war very logical, war=poor economy many deaths and unhappy families, assassination=1 dead guy
maybe we should apply this in a couple of situations going on right now...

bush already gives out assassination orders. but i suspect that assassinating saddam is only going to make him a martyr.

I thought the incendiary tactics part was just great and random... but like HH said, the best part is that yuoshoudln't need to resort to war, buti f you have to, it's brains that'll win.

i don't know if it's in the translated version or not...but this lawyer once disclosed that she was going to use the strategies of suntzu in her case and my dad said that was super-taboo, because you're never supposed to reveal that you've read or know how to apply suntzu...unless you're teaching a student or something.

the art of war is being read by everyone now. it doesn't really matter. if you know to apply it, well.... that's a different story.

The Art of War is a great book and I enjoyed it tremendously. For those of you who like related works, I would like to suggest Clauswitz's "On War."
The Archduke Charles of Austria (Napoleon's great Habsburg adversary) also penned a remarkable collection, but the name of the book escapes me right now.

Yeah I heard about it. But you're right. You're not suppose to tell people you use Sunztzu teaching. It like given up trade secrets to the enemy.

Taboo as in it's just a stupid thing to do, reveal your source, or taboo as in it'll be "bad luck."
