I've never run it before, but I've watched it on TV. Last year, I think an Ethiopian won. An African.

I want to run a half marathon this July, with my uncle who is turning 40. I don't know if I have the stamina to go 13 miles, though. Guess we'll see what happens. Any training tips?

Have you run marathons before?

i was hardcore XC and track in high school.. and then i ran for college for a year too. So i have experience running, but I have never run a marathon before (which is why i want to do it)

But i haven't run competitively in almost 5 years... so it felt like i was starting scratch.

Training tips.. hmm.. I usually follow the basic "pyramid" training scheme. If you've never run before, I woudln't reccommend runing everyday.. following something like this:

week 1: 8 miles
week 2: 12 miles
week 3: 15 miles
week 4: 20 miles
week 5: 25 miles.. and on and on.. I plan on trying to hit like 60 miles a week, and then work my way back down until the week before the marathon i'll be running like less than 10 miles.

*shrug* hope that helps :) good luck!

Towards the end of the summer, I was doing 5-6 miles every day, but now I'm down to 3. Guess I'll have to dedicate myself to training now, if I really want to go through with this.

i did it in '96, hopkinton is near southborough, i *think* 7th exit off route 9?
i'm not sure, thereabouts, it's pass framingham, but before worcester.

you need to qualify the prelims before you get a number in the marathon,
i dunno if they changed the rules much from back in '96.

=) good luck though!

oh i'm sure there are. might want to check at like the city office
or sumthing or like local colleges. or you can just take the train.
i've only been on the train like twice so i forgot, but i *think* there's
a stop in hopkinton. i'm not too sure.

i'll try to rummage through my old stuff, incase i find anything, i'll
let you know! =)

hee hee time sure flies, i remember
i did it cuz it was the 100th anniversary.
but i wasn't of age yet at that time. i
thinkn you have to be 18? and like
the qualifying time is under 4 hrs i think
it varies from age group to age group.

like i think the 80 year olds get like 6
hours or sumthin' to run it.

when i ran it, i lived in southborough,
that's just north from hopkinton, but
here's a couple maps

http://www.state.ma.us/sec/cis/cismap/mapidx.htm
http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Pyt=Tmap&...t%A0Map=Get+Map (http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Pyt=Tmap&&csz=Hopkinton+MA+&Get%A0Map=Get+Map)

i know greyhound runs to hopkinton too
like you can grab one at backbay, but
i think they have a different name, like
it's a bus company that's affiliated with
greyhound, it's like a 45 min ride from
backbay?

but the marathon have like different
starting corrals, so make sure you know
where' you're going to. oh and don't
get caught as a bandit before you run,
or else they won't let you run =)

worse comes to worse, you can just
call them =)

Boston Athletic Association
"The Starting Line"/One Ash Street
Hopkinton, MA 01748-1897
Telephone: 508.435.6905

be sure you're ready for it, some
people were crazy when i did it.
like poopin' n' peeing in their pants,
throwing up all over the place. i
wasn't a heavy smoker then, and
i ran like 12 miles a day on a regular
basis, plus i was training for crew, so
i was pretty fit then. so like yah man,
be ready =)

i ran as a bandit =) didn't qualify the age limit, i started off
at the like one of the last starting corrals, the first starting
corrals is where all the elite athletes start.

i didn't see anybody kicked out, but i heard stories and rumours
n' stuff, they check by your bib number =) cuz you need to be
registered. oh and like if you don't have a bib on and whatever,
they're not gonna give you aide or refreshments n' stuff. so
be ready and pack your stuff. =)

Rogmok

but no one is like sitting at the starting line making sure eveyrone has a bib, right?

yeah.. i was thinking about that.. i guess i'll just wear what i can run in to the starting line.

what kind of aid do they give to registered runners?

teaz0r

like drinks, ambulance, refreshments n' stuff.

why don't you try to register? i think you just have
to make it under 4 hours to qualify. oh wait you've never
been in a marathon before. call the office or sumthing
and check what preliminaries you have to qualify.

BANDIT RUNNERS http://www.bostonmarathon.org/QandA.asp?id=3

I do not have a qualifying time or bib number. Can I run the race as an unofficial entrant?

No. Race amenities provided along the course, including medical assistance, fluid replenishment stations and traffic safety concerns are based on the exact number of officially-entered competitors. Any addition to this number by way of unofficial participants, will adversely affect the Boston Athletic Association's ability to ensure the safety and welfare of everyone. Please do not run the Boston Marathon unless you are officially entered in the race.

i dunno how old you are, but here:

Entrants must have run a qualifying time between September 28, 2001 and February 2, 2003 at a certified marathon in order to participate in the 2003 race. All participants must adhere to the guidelines set forth by the B.A.A., USA Track and Field or foreign equivalent, Wheelchair Athletics USA, and the International Stoke-Mandeville Wheelchair Sports Federation. Qualifying times must be met in competitions observing these same rules. Proof of qualification must accompany the application. Participants must be 18 years or older on race day.

Qualifying times are based upon age on race day.

hmm..
i think i could run a 3:40.. but.. i'd have to do it in like a month, if i wanted ample recovery time for boston..

argh.. let me do some research and see if there are any local marathons coming up.

my coworker said he ran one in Lowell that was pretty flat.
