i've been trying to get my friend's laptop to play videos on the tv. his laptop has an s-video output and we can get the windows xp desktop to showup on the tv and we can play wc3. but when we try to play any type of movie file such as divx, mpeg, or quicktime nothing shows up in the space that its supposed to. can we do anything about this?
Any video -- in fullscreen mode, or even in a window? If even video in a window will not show up, I am guessing it is some type of hardware acceleration or overlay method that for some reason doesn't get sent though the S-Video output. Perhaps turning off hardware acceleration would work. Also, are you using different video player software or just one (I assume Windows Media Player)?

good thought... i'll try turning off hardware acceleration (if thats even possible).
but ya, we tried in every type of screen mode and every video player we had on the laptop. didn't try dvd's tho... gotta try that.

i thought you had to buy a special type of s-type outlet wire, not just ones you use normally....i think its a bit more expensive because thats what schools sue

Try Twins Video Player (http://www.twins-software.com/) and let me know if it works. As far as I know it won't use overlay by default. If it shows up then it's a DirectShow overlay problem. DirectShow overlays are different from the DirectX mode games use, and I still suspect that is the problem.

damn.... no idea what the problem is then.
As for converting to VCD... NERO Burning Rom will take most video formats (including your divx) and convert it to the MPG neccessary for VCD.
