Smith says he's far from done

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

IRVING, Texas -- Emmitt Smith, the leading rusher in NFL history, was released Thursday after 13 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.

Smith said he's not ready to retire.

"In my mind, I think I'm a 1,300-yard back, and I will be out to prove that,'' Smith said at a news conference with team owner Jerry Jones.

He was released to make way for a younger, cheaper running back for the Cowboys, who have been 5-11 for the last three seasons. It's the first major roster shakeup since Bill Parcells took over as coach, although Jones has made it clear it was his decision.

Thank you. I thought I was the only guy on this site that respected Emmitt. I'm not sure though what hurts more, the fact that the Cowboys were forced to cut the greatest running back in the history of their organization (and most others), or that Emmitt just won't retire after the most successful career of all time...

My skins cut Stephen Davis. MY guess is Davis goes to the BOYS and Emmit comes to the SKINS! Oh the drama.

Snyder is stupid enuf to do it too.

edit: didn't know we got Trung Candidate.

I'd like to see Emmit in a Giants or Eagles uniform then. I want him to get revenge on Dallas...

Davis has had his share of problems. I drafted him on one of my teams and the potential is certainly there, but he's just too damn inconsistent.

Can't he come back now that his contract with Detroit is done?

I think Detroit still controls his rights for another year or 2.

Either way, Barry's never shown an inclination to come back.

If I were a GM, I wouldn't show any interest in Barry. Guys with no heart suck.

You're obviously not the GM/Owner of the Washington Redskins then. :P

Ask all the hundreds of defenders Barry left in the dust and foolish if he had any heart. Ask the Tampa Bay Buccaneers if Barry had any heart. Just because his priority isn't football and he never had a SuperBowl caliber team around him doesn't mean he doesn't have heart. No one runs for over 1000 yards like 10 seasons in a row or whatever in the NFL without heart. Barry's got heart.

I disagree. Give me Barry's legs and Barry's money and I'd have the rushing title -- last year.

Heart can never be quantified in statistics alone. Talent maybe, but not heart. Playing through pain, through twisted ankles, separated shoulders -- the sort of thing Emmitt was known for -- is what defines heart; yes, making football a priority.

And although the Lions never had near the talent-caliber type of teams that the Cowboys did in the early 90s, they had some good teams, some high-powered offenses. Scott Mitchell in his hey-day, Herman Moore, Johnnie Morton (heh).

lol scott mitchell, he sucks so much my friends and I have a term for a fuckup- a Scott Mitchell, when my computer crashed I'd call it a Scott Mitchell and when my friend failed a test he pulled a Scott Mitchell...anyways I digress

high powered offenses do not SuperBowl caliber teams make, the winners of the SB support the idea that defense wins championships...the Lions werent able to do shit cuz their D were real bad, kinda like the Bills last year

Just because Barry never endured separated shoulders and twisted ankles doesnt mean he didnt have heart. He just stayed healthy for most of his career. And he showed his heart by other ways, such as staying on ONE losing team his whole career, unlike a certain other Hall of Fame bound runningback who bolted as his franchise was struggling.

Scott Mitchell in 1995:

346/583
59.3 percent
4338 yards
7.44 average per throw
91 long throw
32 touchdown passes
12 interceptions

I'm not saying Mitchell will go down in history as a great QB, but he had his marquee year.

Defense?

Their 1991 team that made it to the NFC Championship featured Jerry Ball, Bennie Blades and Chris Spielman -- all who made the Pro Bowl that year. They ranked #11 in the league in points allowed.

Why didn't they beat the Redskins that day? Cuz Barry sucked.

And by the way, Emmitt didn't just jump ship from a losing franchise. Keep in mind, this is a losing franchise that just signed on one of the best head coaches of all time. Emmitt clearly wanted to stay -- it was the Cowboys who gave him the boot.

Uh, Scott Mitchell's one season of statistical anomaly and one year of ranking in the middle of the pack in defense doesn't even come CLOSE to comparing with having the likes of Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Jay Novacek, Kevin Smith, etc. Not to mention that Dallas had the best offensive line in the whole decade of the 90s.

The bottom line is, if Barry and Emmitt switched casts and situations, Barry would be the one with numerous rings and Emmitt, with a horrible team, would probably never have gotten to a Pro Bowl.

Oh, you're talking about the team that lost 45-0 against the Redskins on opening day? The game where Mark Rypien stopped playing after the 1st half and gave the rest of the game to a man who usually served no function other than to hold the ball for Chip Lohmiller on field goals and extra points? The team that was SO BAD, the Redskins Offense was instructed to down the ball 4 times on the Lions 1 yard line out of pity for their horrible team, so that the score wouldn't be any more humiliating?

Yea, their defense was GREAT!

Come on! Barry didn't suck, you have to give credit to the Capital Punishment Defense which effectively neutralized them.

Don't even dare try to take any glory from the '91-Skins.

Remember, this team destroyed Dallas the week before the NFC Championship.

Blah. Of course the Redskin fan amongst us is going to be singing Barry's praises, otherwise, the Skin's had a cakewalk to Super Bowl.

I seem to have fonder memories of the champs the year after:)

The DID have a cake walk to the Superbowl.

They only had to defeat Atlanta and Detroit.

And Detroit stunned Dallas.

Everyone was expecting the NFC championship to be Dallas vs Washington.

That would have been awesome!

It's so sad what happened to the 'skins after that. I am convinced they will never make it to the Bowl again so long as Daniel Snyder is the owner.
