View Full Version : The post-rave vibe

Glow sticks streak in psychedelic circles as this historically gay venue hosts a predominantly straight Asian American crowd. Ravers bounce and go-go girls in pigtails, hot pants and perilously high platform boots shake it as a white female DJ spins bootylicious break beats atop a roped-off stage. A sign states, "authorized personal only," and if that's not anti-rave enough, there's a VIP room with champagne and a buffet.

Worlds collide at Red, a weekly night that defies global dance culture as much as it embraces it. The mix of oft-derided glow-stick dancers, superstar DJs, Asian-style VIP tables and an audience that still hasn't let go of '90s trance music is uniquely Angeleno.

"Raves are kind of history right now," says 26-year-old patron Peter Kim, a research associate at a medical firm, "so this is the only way you can feel that vibe, but it's more civilized."

Can't stand that place. My friend is one of the resident DJs there. *Sigh*

Red was much better when it was an afterhour spot.

Werd.

But it was always like... basically... a room full of Asians on E.

Haven't been to the 'new' Red yet. But I do remember the good ol' days, when it was in ghetto downtown LA...(sigh)...good times!

raves are dead for me too. too dirty and i'm getting to old for it.

i still listen to the trance/house at work. and if i did pop an e i would probably still have fun but i wouldn't plan it.

I remember going to Red a week before the Democratic convention. Must have been three years ago. Left the place sloshed as I was drinking the whole night and there were police cruisers along every goddamn street around there.

So I took my car on the metro railway.
