Cool.

I'm not mixed, but I have a friend in HS who is half white/half Japanese.

He's one good looking stud I tell you.

It's the Hawaiian word for "half". I think.

It's a Hawaiian word meaning "half". Hapa is a truncation of the term Hapa Haole, which means half Hawaiian, half White. However in its usage among AAs it has come to mean anyone of partial Asian or Pacific Islander heritage.

And, not to be snide or anything, but this subject has already come up before here (http://forums.yellowworld.org/index.php?act=ST&f=54&t=1908).

While, I'm too lazy to do a search, but anyways, I used to live in Hawaii, and I've never heard of that word.

I've heard of Haole, that's for sure  :P

it also refers to a mesh incubator for trout eggs.

Is this word used on the West Coast and in Hawaii fairly often? Cause I know if I mentioned it here in the South, no one, probably not even the asians, would know what the hell I was talking about. The only place I use the word is on the internet, so I feel a bit weird saying it here.

I would guess that as a general term it's more West Coast use -- the Hawaiian Asians I've met tend to disregard the term.

As a southwesterner, I've only become aware of the term 'bout two years ago.

It's not a Norhtern thing either, although there's not much AA culture in the Northeast outside of NYC anyway... I don't really like using it 'cause even though it's in another language, it still means 'half', which is a word I was taunted with as a child. Also I identify as biracial but not specifically as a biraical that's part Asian.

Do you mean that it's said often in transracial adoption groups, or that it's said often in normal conversation? Because I've never heard anyone say it outside the context of a social activism meeting.

eh... the only time i have such discussion about identity issues is with groups like these... and even when i attended the ecasu event... the term was brought up... and when it comes to normal conversations... heck, i dont even use the term transracial...

i just think certain vocabulary words are used when discussing certain issues.. which is why its brought up in certain settings...
