on a side note: i worked at an asian law organization once and had a blast. our supervisor took us out for korean and japanese food almost everyday. we partied together on the weekends. it's that type of rapport that i'm almost positives white people share too...so what to do if you're not white?

i've had old white bosses before. but i never felt left out when we have company get-togethers and i'm the only asian. i feel just as comfortable being around (or working with) all white people or all asian people. and actually during the first two years in my college days i worked with all black people. that was actually really fun because they weren't college kids, but local working class people in the city and they were very down-to-earth.

The last time I had an old white boss was when I worked in undergrad. She was this 70+ year old lady. Very nice. She totally bought into the whole model minority myth, which worked to my great advantage because I could do no wrong. She'd yell at everyone on the premises for one thing or another, but not me (everyone else was white, not to mention related to her in some way). I was the boss's favorite. What'd we have in common? We both liked sushi and thought everyone else there was incompetent.=)

yes, i'm very familiar with my "white face." and with re: to swk's comment about working with black ppl--that situation is different b/c, there, at least you're all minorities and can understand one another on that level...

but anyhow...even if you don't have a difficult time conversing with your "old white boss", if it's between you and another young white guy that they're going to invite home for dinner...or to a game--i think it's going to be the young white guy.

well... how about having a libyan boss who always complains about jews, mexicans and black people, and keeps on calling you an oriental when you keep reminding him that the PC word is ASIAN. fricking arab man. he always used to get mad when someone said something about his culture, but anything he said about your culture was just a whole-hearted joke. asss--h0.

or how about an old white jewish boss? jews have this slight accent. it's kinda funny. all i used to hear about was dradle this, dradle that. or.. don't let my wife catch me eating pork... or hey it's another holiday next week....

anyhow --
I've only worked for white bosses, and the presidents / department heads for each of the places I've worked at have been jewish. [a strange observation that I've noted to myself before....] (and btw, i've only been in the working world since 1998.........)

I've found that with the white male bosses, I have not had that much in common with them at all... I've felt very left out of their "old-boys-club" mentality....(I'm a gurl, by the way) and it sucks.

The current jewish white president that I work for has promoted me since I've started working here in 2000, but I am currently in a supevisor position... (not quite middle management...) and I feel like I'm stuck here. Everyone else in this small company of 60 people who is in middle management is white. He's very 'chummy' with people here who are male, and who are closer to his age, and who are white, or jewish. I suppose that's sort of part of a lot of human nature --- to associate w/ those who have most in common with you... But... it still sucks.

i've had white male bosses. i prefer to have my work and personal life separate. i noticed my male bosses were chummier with my white co-workers. they even go out to the pub and hang out. i just go work and in the evening i start my own life. i like it this way, but i realize you're not going to move up in the company when your boss doesn't even get to know you. half of getting a promotion is the ability to get along well with others. you can't display this if your not included. i once had a female boss, that was cool and i think ideal. she didn't care about being your friend, just dished out the work and expected to get results. my co workers hated her and would call her a bitch.

My boss and I got along great, he was hip Jewish guy and we always hung out. He was the Senior Director and I was the manager reporting directly to him. Our office started out in New York and our company was truly a melting pot. We had a pretty diverse group and I never felt as if there was any division of lines. After the internet company that we both worked for picked up and moved to Seattle (we opted not to move), we stayed friends to this day.

Most of my white bosses were not boring. We had keggers, cakes, outings, lunch at fancy restaurants, etc. I have not had too many Asian bosses so I can't comment much about that.

No way! Asian bosses are the cheap bastards that treat you to sushi as your bonus for settling a case and generating $60,000 of income for the firm. WTF? No cash bonus but rather $20 in sushi?! No way. Maybe once every two months or so.

Even if he did buy me lunch every day, that's still only $1,500 extra a year which only brings me to the same level of pay as a teacher who only works nine months out of the year.

Oh yeah, teachers get benefits too. This mo-fo's been dragging his feet all year regarding benefits. If I break my arm, I'm screwed. Our secretary's pregnant and actually qualified for medical/medicaid 'cause he's paying her so little and he never got her benefits even though she's been working for the dude for like 3 years.

Meanwhile, this guy sends his kid to a $30k/year elementary school. WTF?!

My "cheap Jewish" boss at the skin-care product place was much more generous. She bought us sushi lunches all the time for no reason whatsoever. Plus, she allowed us to stay on the clock as we ate lunch. Not only were some of the lunches paid for, but we were paid for them!
