Spring training's starting...anyone want to play fantasy baseball?
Any suggestions on which site? Yahoo runs a free league, some other places make you pay.
There are several scoring options. Roto league, points league, head to head play, etc...live draft or list draft?
I'm open to any and all, but I'd prefer a roto league with a live draft.
We probably want 10 players.
Who wants in???

It is a game based on statistics, and while there is an element of luck, it depends most on strategy. You start by drafting players, and from this you create rosters. For the active players on your roster, their real world performance is distilled into categorized numbers. Based on these numbers, you get points or beat someone else and you get a win for the week. It requires a bit of homework since you don't want to activate a player who is injured, for one example. If you regularly watch baseball and ESPNnews then it helps. The more hardcore people do a lot more research. Yahoo's interface is web-based and very smooth and easy to use.
P.S. I can't wait until you reach mafia status since it takes a bit of work to wade through your bullshit to get to something worth reading. Honestly, I should have petitioned ab to just give it to you.

10 team 5X5 scoring roto style...do you guys want to play head to head (like a football league) or a season (like basketball)?
I'll set a league up in a week or 2 and get you guys to join.

So when is this all gonna take place?
I dont know if i can do live drafting because of time differences.
Are we allowing DH?
Do we get points for impressive defense?
Do Offensive points count on plays with errors?
Do we get penalized if our players commit errors?
Is there a salary cap?
lethal
02-18-2003, 10:16 PM
10 team Roto 5X5 is 5 pitching categories and 5 hitting categories.
In head to head, you copete against your opponent that week in those 10 categories. Each category you win is a "win" in the win column. Each category you lose is a "loss" in the loss column. Those wins and losses accumulate during the year to determine playoff seeding.
For season style, you're ranked 1-10 in each category (10 being the best and 1 being the worst). Your scores are added up and the 10 teams are ranked that way.
If I remember correctly, the 10 categories are BA, OPS, Hits, HR, and Steals. The pitching categories are Wins, ERA, WHIP, Saves, and Ks. Defense doesn't matter I don't think.
Each team is something like 20 players. There are utility positions, so you can use DHs.
Yahoo hasn't started this baseball season yet, so it'll take place in a few weeks. Opening day is late March, so there's time.
No salary cap since we're drafting. No player can be on 2 teams.
I think a live draft is better. I'll try to find a mutually acceptable time for everyone. If that's not possible, you can submit a draft order prior to the draft and Yahoo will pick players for you based on your rankings.

I'm not exactly clear on how the scoring works.
Everyone knows that in real life, the teams with the best pitchers win.
Here tho, it seems like it would be more beneficial for you to have sluggers, since you have 12 batters and 8 pitchers. Plus, the pitchers don't play every day, while the batters do.
Therefore, I think that in this game, hitting counts more than pitching.
Is a win for your pitcher worth more points than the other categories?

Odds of the majority of us being home at that time on a Friday night are slim. And BTR doesn't have access Sat morning for him.
Sorry, draft's gotta stay where it is. Rank your players if you can't stay up that long. If you put in the work beforehand, the day of the draft is nothing anyway.

Is a win for your pitcher worth more points than the other categories?
Pitching and hitting are counted eaually.
There are 6 hitting categories and 6 pitching categories.
Basically, your pitchers compete against the otehr team's pitchers and your hitters compete against the other team's hitters. A 25 man roster usually consists of 11-12 pitchers and 13-14 hitters. I wanted to maintain roughly that proportion.
OK, so the pitching categories are ERA, Wins, Saves, Holds, WHIP, and Ks. The hitting categories are Runs, HRs, RBI, SB, BA, and OPS.
So each week, you compete head to head against an opposing team. Say you and I play in week 1. In the 12 categories, I win 7, you win 4, and we're tied in 1. For that week, I get 7 wins, 4 losses, and a tie. You get 4 wins, 7 losses, and a tie. If in that same week CSB plays AB and CSB wins 10 and AB wins 2. The standings would have CSB in first with a record of 10-2. I'd be in second with a record of 7-4-1. I'd be 2.5 games back. You'd be 4-7-1 and 5.5 games back of CSB. AB would be 2-10 and 8 games back.
Say in week 2, I play CSB and I win 12-0. You play AB and you win 8-3-1. The games are added to your cumulative record. I'd be 19-4-1. You would be 12-10-2. CSB would be 10-14-0. AB would be 5-18-1.
Each week you play 12 "games" against your opponent, each statistical category representing a "game."
So, say you have really good pitchers, but your hitters are terrible. You might win every pitching category every week, but lose every hitting category every week. You'd be a .500 team. Then again, the team you're playing could have even better pitching and even worse hitting. You could win hitter's categories that week. Or if your relievers are bad or have a bad week, maybe you don't win the saves category, but you get the Ks and Wins category.
Basically, hitting and pitcing count the same even though there are more hitters on your roster.

I see how it works. so that means during the whole season there are 486 games? WOW! Talk about iron man! HA HA JK.

BeTheReds

I got a friend to join.
That's the problem with pre-ranking and not drafting live....you, in theory, could end up with Rodriguez, Jeter and Garciaparra if you rank them all high on your list. With live drafting you have the opportunity to pass on a position and go with the best player in another position.
That being said, I have usually had good luck with pre-drafting. And there is always trades if you have two stars in one position.
lethal
03-05-2003, 05:30 PM
Yahoo does go more or less with the player position limits you set. So if you set 2 SSs, if you already have 2 SSs and when its your turn, it'll bypass all the rest of the SSs available, even if A-Rod is available.
We got 8 now. 4 more would be great, but we can settle for 2 more...we can even go with 8. Its not nearly as hard with 8 though.

03-12-2003, 01:54 AM
So baiscally more important than being there for the draft, being there immediately after the draft is what is important. Because then is when you will have free access to ALL undrafted MLB players.
now assuming the top 200 get picked up in the draft (as there are 8 teams and 25 roster spots) who is gonne be left?
After the draft, all of the undrafted players will not be available for immediate pick up. They will be on "waivers" which gives everyone the opportunity to try to get them on their team. Assuming that more than one person wants an undrafted player, who gets them is determined by the draft order, with the person going last having the highest waiver priority. After a couple of days, the players "clear waivers" and are immediately available to anyone who wants to swap one of their existing players for them.
Don't count on finding many quality guys in the leftovers. Put your effort into the live draft itself. That is where the success of your team will be determined.

Nice tie, BTR...held the fort agaisnt the league leader. Now its time to pick up some wins. 2 runs short of an outright victory.
AB...dude...you lost pretty handily.
I had a bit of luck yesterday when the Cubs-Cards game was rained out. My pitcher had given up 11 runs in 4 innings....with the game cancelled, all the stats were wiped out....whew! I probably would have lost ERA and WHIP if it had counted.

Yes, who will it be?
It's rather surprising. I have decent hitters, some of them Superstars. My pitching isn't that bad either. I figured after the draft I would be somewhere in the middle of the pack.
Looks like I am taking on first place again this week.

it's a long season, BTR.
things change
it's still pretty close, if you go by how far you're behind from the person above you, adjust accordingly and try and pull out a win; you'll be back in it in no time. you're what 22 games behind first? one 12-0 shut out one week you're right back in it. that's the way i look at it.

Sorry to hear about Mikey...losing a star player from your fantasy squad is always painful, you know I share in your suffering...
On the bright side, Varitek hasn't been playing too poorly. And half the time Piazza was playing, he was suffering some kinda nagging injury. Besides, aside from the top two or three catchers out there, you're not going to get a ton of production from that position. It's like TE for football.

Not sure if anyone responded to my post on "streaming" pitchers...but this week my strategy against Monkyas is a good example of that. Because Hernandez and Pedro are both on the DL, I'm left with about three core starting pitchers (Jason Schmidt, Curt Schilling, and Kyle Lohse...if Lohse can be considered "core").
Solution? Everyday I pick up about one or two starting pitchers for the next day, obviously trying to figure out who has the best chance of winning that day. So far, heh, it hasn't exactly worked out for the better, but I think the idea is solid, given the circumstances. I'm just trying to pick up K's, wins and saves...

are you saying you'll be the first to lose to btr?
and who's everett? why is he included in all the offers you sent me for soriano.
you making me suspicious like a chinaman that was involved in tienaman square about to get busted by the chinese gov'ment. or a chinaman displaced in japan.

a ha!
i see why ab offered me everett and nomar for soriano.
by offering me a two for one that comprised of an outfielder would entail me dropping one of my own outfielders. my outfielders are slightly below par, on par or better than everett. by me dropping one outfielder (naturally one of the lower stat outfielders) would allow someone else to pick him up off waivers and mebbe strengthening their roster. essentially a trade straight up nomar for soriano.
hypothetically, i prolly would've dropped juan encarnacion since stat wise he's the lowest out of my outfielders. as a result losing the 18 stolen bases by soriano and the 12 stolen bases by encarnacion.
i tip my hat off to you, bossman. but, my momma didn't raise no fool.

You paranoid mofo. I had never strategized that far; I just figured you could use an outfielder who'd hit 16 hr's (and one today, thank-you-very-much) along with filling the hole you had at short. I never figure I can loot or rape you in fantasy; we're both too stingy:) So I think it was a win-win situation.
But since you offered your analysis...
I personally think Everett is better than all of your outfielders -- on paper, but hey, since this is fantasy, that's all that matters. How can you argue with 50 runs, 17 hr's, 47rbi's? And I think you're blowing SB's out of proportion. Yes, they're a crucial category, but I'd rather pick up power hitters who can get three categories than just one. Yes, Soriano has the extra dimension -- and that's why I offered two quality players! Bottom line, when it comes down to it, your HRs, runs and RBI's increase...

you're doing too much endo:
garret anderson
carlos beltran (who was out in the beginning).
i would take those two over everett.
sure runs, HR's and rbi's may increase, but not dramatically. and not worth it at the cost of soriano + an outfielder i have no need for and the dramatic drop in stolen bases. i already have the hitting. i can hold my own in those categories. i need the intangibles, like stolen bases.
win-win situation in your mind. not in mine.
come on now. let's be real. the advantage is in your favor or else you wouldn't be so persistent and hell bent on getting soriano throwing me 3 trade offers in one day. and on top of that soriano would fit in nicely into your roster.
i can't blame you for trying. it's part of the game.

Yes, you are correct in saying that the addition of Soriano would turn me into Shaquille O'Neal on roids and speed. Every trade, ideally, should benefit both sides, so I never said it wouldn't benefit me, just that it would be mutual.
Here's the upside to the deal for you, even if you keep Anderson or Beltran:
Everett way over Gonzalez, Hidalgo, Encarnancion for an outfield spot (you can bench one of em);
Nomar easily over Jose Valentin, who you drop or move into MI;
Bret Boone moves into your 2nd base.
I still think this would benefit your team.
There's no trash talkin in our league cuz parity is too great! One week you win, one week you lose...in an eight man league, every team should be overloaded with quality players...

remember what i've said over aim? i ain't taking a trade for soriano unless it's overwhelmingly in my favor, not a little in my favor, a lot. call it NY pride! a true ny'er would never trade a franchise yankee player like soriano for a red sox! holla! and richard hidalgo's been on a warpath thank you very much.

Really, Really I am flattered that you are offering me 2 players for Melvin Mora. But the problem is, I am using Melvin for his SS eligiblity. Upping the ante by offering me outfielders and 3rd basemen is great. However I would have to get rid of a player to accept the trade, and then pick up someone to play in the MI spot. which means I would need to get rid of another player.
Lastly, Batista and Hillenbrand are not too bad as 3B's go, and soon Hinske will be off the DL which means one of these are gonna have to go. I do like Blalock, but he'd be my 4th 3B.
The only 3B of yours I will trade Melvin Mora for is Pujols, and I doubt you will part with him.

BTR, you have Roberts playing Util right now. If you move a MI, you could shift Brian Roberts to MI and put in an OF into the Util postion. Blalock is far better than any 3B on your roster. He's hitting 350 with an almost 1.000 OPS. 11 HRs, lots of runs and RBI. He is seriously better than Batista (Runs, RBI, SB, HR same. 340 vs 268 Avg; 956 OPS vs 752), Hillenbrand (RBI and SB same. 2X runs, 3X HR, 340 vs 300 BA, 956 to 795 OPS), and Hinske (I won't do counting stats cause he's been injured, but he's hitting 232 with a 709 OPS. Even last year he only hit 279 with an 846 OPS).
Mora may or may not be a fluke. Blalock's almost as good as he is right now and Blalock will get better while Mora will probably get worse. Plus, I'm throwing in a OF or 1B or 3B who could easily replace a non-performer like Hillenbrand or even Conine.

you were supposed to duke it out with twin dragons and let me inch closer to the top spot. give your players a pep talk!
with ab and me duking it out. i think twin dragons will be pushing first place by end of sunday. it will be close in the top spot between ab and twin dragons unless i completely decimate ab and bump him off. but i don't see that happening.
i draw hong kong mets next week. but, i lost to him in our previous outing (week 6) then after that i draw twin dragons, but i beat him 7-4 in the previous head to head (week 7). i've also had a lot of problems with btr in the last two outings winning barely by the skin of my teeth.
the only two people i haven't beat yet are k-town (hopefully that will change this week) and hk mets.
i don't think it's a roster issue. i think we're all evenly matched. more like who has more hot players that week. maybe it boils down to whether or not which players has juiced up or not. and also which team one of our teams has the most players on steroids.

I still have three pitchers (including my #1 draft pick) on DL but managed with a little streaming to hold my own. I lost every category in batting and I am not sure how to fix that.
I accidentally dropped Ryan Franklin....I meant to drop Jeff Nelson (both Seattle pitchers) so please don't claim him! I need him back :-) But I know, all is fair in love and fantasy baseball.

Gagne and Smoltz. I'll dominate saves for the rest of the year and Gagne helps out the ERA and WHIP some...and that's where I definately need help.
I figure its an even trade and I can more easily find hitting help than closing help. I mean, Gagne is replacing Franklyn German for Christ's sake.

Oh...well kick his ass for me...for all of us actually. Hell, I might as well drop out of the race since I'm so far back now. But then again...we're not even at the all star break yet. We're barely halfway through the season!
I still got time to recover. We all do.

i'll try. he's a toughie.
i beat him 7-4 last time. ab beat him 9-2 in their last outing.
i'm monitoring my batters carefully.
i switched from a no bench batters to a max pitching roster to try and optimize my pitching since they be slacking a bit. this is what i've learned from my encounter against ab last week.
you all need to keep your eyes on the prize. still a long ass way to go.

Personally, I think this was a bad trade, LW. Yes, it definitely helps pad the "S" column, but what's the difference between me having two outstanding set-up guys (like Dotel and Grimsley, heh) who lock up the Holds category every week...? It's just that -- *one* category...(closers are only going to have a marginal effect on the ERA and WHIP, even less on the K's and Holds). Closers are coveted in roto leagues because they pad your save total, like having Ben Wallace take care of the boards. In head to heads, they serve a limited purpose.
Contrast that with hitters, who affect six categories (runs, HR's, rbi's, sb's, average, ops). If you can dominate the HR and RBI categories, you'll most likely also dominate runs, average and OPS, which in turn leads to the W.
Where a dominate closer can really make the difference is in the playoffs...

Ahhh, I'm flattered:) The pitcher-streaming thing has paid off a couple of times, you just can't rely on it week to week. I use it to some extent against opponents who have a better starting pitching roster than me (which is just about everyone). If you can pick one starting pitcher every other day who's going to be win, you can dominate the W and K category. It would have really paid off last week against bunboy had I chose to start Jake Peavy, who I picked up Saturday because I could see we were tied in W's and bunboy didn't have any SP left. I chickened out at the last minute though because I figured I still had Jae Seo pitching and the ERA and WHIP was so close, I thought Peavy v. the Mariners might disrupt that.
Turned out to be a bad call. Peavy got the win and shut down Seattle:(

didn't want to say anything but since ab bought it up.
i would pick an ace batter over an ace pitcher anyday. hitters are out there and have more of an affect on your production.
i think you could've gotten more for pujols.
heh heh heh rescind the trade.

that's what i was saying about soriano. an ace hitter and one that can bring you sb's.
this was my strategy from the get go. hog all the ace hitters that can also yield me sb's.
in my last 4 wins. i either dominated, edged out or been edged out in hr's, rbi's, runs, BA, OPPS.
the times i been edged out or broke even in a hitting category, i compensated that with sb's (that's why i was so stingy with soriano and other hitter/base stealers. a hitter that brings you sb's is priceless, in my opinion). my pitching staff plays a factor but my pitching staff is at best mediocre and hit or miss each week.

nope.
cmar beat me in hr's. by two.
we were close in every category.
the thing that separated our hitters was that i had more hitters that can hit and steal bases during that encounter. correct me if i'm wrong, cmar. i remember this cuz we were neck and neck going into the end of the week and i was thinking: "I hope my ace hitters and base stealers come through."
juan pierre, ivan rodriguez and austin kearns vs alfonso soriano, carlos beltran, derek lee, juan encarnacion, bret boone, luis gonzalez and richard hidalgo. all solid hitters with base stealing capabilities.

Maybe I could've gotten more. I just wanted to change up a little, and I think it is a fairly even deal. I also suspect Pujols won't keep hitting at this torrid pace the entire year whereas Gagne is going to stay this good the entire year.
I'll win saves every week with Smoltz and Gagne and while they don't help WHIP and ERA that much, they both do K a lot of guys relative to their IP.
Also, I can more easily replace Pujols than Gagne, that is, I'll lose less when replacing Pujols at either 1B or LB than I will replacing Gagne at closer.
<shrug> We'll see how it all works out.
Everyone makes the playoffs, but only the top 6 are in the Champions Bracket. 7th and 8th play in the Consolation Bracket. At least that's what the schedule says, but the schedule also assumes a 12 team leagu, so I'm not sure what they do with an 8 team league.

That's one contest though. Contrast that with nearly every other match up in which HR's have been the leading factor, and you gotta figure -- guys who can hit it outta the park, on average, win games for you.
Sure, there are guys like Soriano out there, but that would be like trying to have a successful basketball strategy built around getting Kobe Bryant in the draft. Odds are, you won't (you lucky bastard).

Woo hoo!! After all that crap I said about Gagne, I just got him in a trade in one of my other (roto) leagues...!
I gave up Alex Rodriguez and Brandon Looper for Alex Gonzalez and Gagne. I wouldn't have done the deal had I not already had Posada, Delgado, Thome, Kent, Chipper, Juan Gonzalez, Morgan Ensberg and Shawn Green...!

what the hell is going on with my pitching?!?!?!?!
going into tonight i have 4 wins, 41 k's, 3 saves.
by tomorrow, i would have 6 wins and 52 k's.since woody williams and dontrelle willis racked up wins. man that dontrelle willis was a steal from waivers. he's like matt clement of last year.
my best pitching performance week ever. kinda like twin dragons pitching from last week.
wow. mebbe i found my pitching roster.
prolly gonna drop one starting pitcher to make room for a bench hitter. texiera shows promise and plays 1st and 3rd base.
leiter is killing me. he either sinks me or pays off big for me. i can't afford to drop him since he does rack up my win column, he does come through after he had a bad game and there's nobody else statistically i can drop him for. wish he wold
