Will probably be at the NYC event. Sucks the moving march couldn't get approved and the protest site is so far away from the U.N. (7 blocks).

Sure. I guess my "probably" is a "definitely" then.

Okay, East Coasters, time to rock Manhattan.

In following the West Coast's steps, we can meet for brunch and organize before heading off to the rally. The establishment selected is Deli Marche. It is a buffet-style deli, pay per pound, lunch would cost $4-10, good variety, from salads to meat, something for everyone. Meeting at 11AM should give us enough time to eat, organize, and travel to the rally. I am offering my mobile # as a point of contact in case anyone gets lost or needs directions; PM me for that.

Locations:
Deli Marche - 182 5th Ave, near the corner with 23rd St. Nearest subway stops: F/S 23rd St., 1/2 23rd St.
Rally: 1st Ave and 49th St., stretching up 1st Avenue.

What we will probably do:
From the Deli, take the F train to 51st and Lexington, then walk the rest. Approximately 1 mile. Subway costs $1.50 per trip.
Forecast predicts snow, high of 26. =( Dress accordingly.

I'm not opposed to your attempt to raise political awareness about coble's comments, but aren't these rallies about not going to war with iraq?

Yep. There aren't any protests demanding war that I'm aware of, and I would guess if there were, we probably wouldn't get too many signatures from those folks.

Yes, that is the main focus. However, Coble's comments were made in the context of the War on Terrorism and is very much related to the War on Iraq. A War on Iraq would bring the U.S. into a wartime situation, which could be used as a pretext for Arab internment.

Let's please refrain from debating about the merits of a particular cause in here. This forum is for discussing specific campaigns, planning, logistics, etc...we can debate about the issue in the Rant Room.

Um some places I know...
New Green Bo has awesome soup dumplings @ 66 Bayard St. in Chinatown

ermm... that's about it... everything else I know is on the West Side or closed at that time... something close to the subway would be nice... help?

New Green Bo is at 66 Bayard St., which is between Mott and Elizabeth, and parallel to Canal. It's a small space and across the street from the Chinatown Ice Cream factory which is hard to miss. Closest subway stops are the Yellow Green and Brown lines... Canal St. station is served by the J, M, Q, W, 6. You can also take the ACE12 to Canal but it's a pretty long walk.

If anyone other than me and TJ wants to meet up in NYC we have had a slight change of plans. If you want to join us please say so before 8AM EST here or in PM and we will meet at the designated place (New Green Bo) at 11AM. Need to know primarily so we know how many more copies to make of the petition. Please leave a mobile # if possible for any change notifications.

Sorry for the constant changes. I'm pretty sure this is the last. =)

So how was it for everyone? Kasie, myself, bluehoodie and four other peeps went to the one in Hollywood and were able to get about 700 signatures. It was a blast seeing that many people march for peace but it was a tad unorganized, unfortunately.

Thanks to everyone who participated and helped getting signatures!

I wish I could have been at the Hollywood march yesterday, but a previous committment called me away. I'm glad to hear that the protests all had such good turn-outs and were relatively orderly. They've been all over the news this morning.

Rakovlam might be pleased to know that I'm still open to persuasion that a multi-lateral war with Iraq might be necessary. But although Colin Powell made the case that Iraq could be a potential threat, he didn't convince me that it's an imminent threat and can only be countered by a military invasion of the country. It still looks to me like Bush wants to go to war for the sake of going to war.

If it's absolutely necessary for us to invade a country militarily, I say that we invade Burma, overthrow the military junta, and put Aung San Suu Kyi into the chief-executive's office, where the people elected her all those years ago. (But I'd rather see this accomplished by peaceful means, too...)

Until then, march on!!!

The Japan turnout infront of the embassy was weak, and consisted of more "we hate america" than "we hate this war" people.

What a day it was yesterday! I thought I would be going with a group of friends to the Manhattan rally (Which is why I didn't meet up with the YW people) , but none of them showed up, so I went alone, which I didn't want to do originally, but whatever. I still went. I got there at about 11:00 even though it was supposed to start at noon, and it was already very crowded. I ended up at First Av. and 53rd St, but the avenue rapidly filled up to at least 70th St. When I tried to leave at about one, having been there for an hour and a half and absolutely numb from the cold, the sidewalk on Second Av. was filled with protestors. And on Third Av. the people had taken the street out of necessity. When I tried to cross it I and about twenty other people nearly got run over by a police van. All the streets in the area were shut down. The area was just mobbed. The turnout was far more than the estimated 100,000. I've heard that anywhere from 375,000 to 500,000 actually showed up. It really was something!

We arrived at 53rd and Lex station after you, around 11:35 I think. We went east on 53rd until we hit 3rd Ave and we were routed uptown. I don't remember exactly where... 68th perhaps, we were allowed to go east to 2nd Ave. We moved further uptown until 72nd, where we went east again to 1st Ave. It seems we made the cutoff, as the others were kept on 2nd and 3rd Ave. By 3:15 or so, the rally was thinning out and we were able to make it down to 59th I think... where the Roosevelt Island tram is. It's one thing seeing a huge crowd in pictures/video but being in the crowd is a totally different thing.

The unofficial police estimate is definitely undercounting. 40th St to 72nd St, is about 1.2 miles. That area was tightly packed, and alone could hold 100k. Add up the people who were spilled over on 2nd Ave just as long, as well as 3rd Ave, and factor in the people leaving and people coming, and I'm estimating 190-240k.

OMG, that is just so way cool...
how did you make a big anti-coble poster like that??

anyways, here in the east at the nyc march... cops didnt allow ppl to have wooden sticks to support their signs... like they saw it as having a potential threat to others or something... ppl here used like the inner cardboard tube from like... wrapping paper rolls... to support their signs...

Kasie and I went to kinkos at midnight Friday and had them blow up one of our fliers. I thought our signs were gonna be a little too polished or something (aside from the Home Depot cardboard they were affixed to) but we saw some very slick signs out there!
